SMALLPOX HOSPITALS IN NORTH O: In January 1899, smallpox was ravishing Omaha. Desperate city leaders wanted to appear responsive and set up two temporary hospitals, also called “pest houses,” by Miller Park and Fontenelle Park, separately from the pest house at the Douglas County Poor Farm. MILLER PARK PEST HOUSE: The Miller Park facility was located near N. 26th and Kansas Ave, and lasted until November 1899 when a fire destroyed the building. “North Siders” took the City of Omaha to court, suing for the abolishment of any pest house in North Omaha ever again. The judge refused their case, and the City built another one that opened there in January 1900. It was destroyed by a fire by March of that year. After that there was never another “pest house” in the Miller Park neighborhood again. FONTENELLE PARK PEST HOUSE: This house was built in February 1899, but neighborhood residents protested against its use. The house was going to be moved to Winspear Triangle in April 1899, but floods stopped that from happening. Then, in September 1899, the house was bought from the City and moved to N. 20th and Charles Street to be re-used as a home. Neighbors were upset and concerned, and protested to the city against its movement there. They hired two doctors to inspect the house, and after scanning documents and looking closely at the house, the doctors said there’d never been a case of smallpox in the building. Instead, the Fontenelle neighbors succeeded in keeping it unused for the disease, and the house was safe for reuse. The photo here shows Miller Park in 1910, a decade after the smallpox pest house was near the park. The house burned down, but was the lot still empty? Renwick St, Soho. Architect James Renwick Jr. (1818-1895) was the son of James Renwick (1790-1863), a professor of philosophy at Columbia College, now Columbia University. As an architect, both on his own and as a member of the firm Renwick, Aspinwall, and Owen, James Renwick Jr. designed many buildings all over the country, the most prominent of which were the main building of the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC, St. Patrick’s Cathedral on 5th Avenue, and the smallpox isolation hospital on Roosevelt Island, formerly Blackwell’s Island. Das Krankenhaus mit 100 Betten wurde vom Architekten James Renwick, Jr. entworfen. Es wurde 1856 eröffnet, als die Insel noch Blackwell’s Island. Das Spital wurde ein Jahrhundert nach seiner Eröffnung geschlossen. Das Gebäude verfiel danach. Es wurde 1972 in das National Register of Historic Places aufgenommen und vier Jahre später als New York City Landmark ausgewiesen. Es ist die einzige Ruine in der Stadt, die auf der Denkmalliste der Stadt geführt wird. Trotz der Verfügbarkeit eines Pockenimpfstoffes gab es in New York City in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts noch größere Epidemien dieser Krankheit, teilweise bedingt durch die Ankunft von infizierten Einwanderern. Das Krankenhaus wurde isoliert an der Südspitze der Insel gebaut, um die Patienten unter Quarantäne zu stellen. Renwick gestaltete das Gebäude im neugotischen Stil und 1903–1905 wurden die beiden in gleicher Weise gestalteten Seitenflügel hinzugefügt.

The neo-Gothic building, designed by James Renwick Jr., opened in 1856 on what was then called Welfare Island as a place to quarantine people infected with smallpox. Twenty years later, it became a training facility for nurses. 🍂 The building was abandoned in the 1950s and fell into disrepair. In the 1970s, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, NYC's only landmarked ruin. 1898 the horse-drawn ambulance used by the Smallpox Hospital, Town Moor, Newcastle upon Tyne and a ward inside the hospital. The hospital opened in 1882 and comprised a single enclosure divided into two units - the Smallpox Hospital with 72 beds and an Isolation Section with 100 beds. The buildings were made of timber and corrugated iron with poor lighting and heating. Smallpox was a terrible disease and highly infectious. On average, 3 out of every 10 people who got it died. People who survived usually had scars, which were sometimes severe. En ése entonces la isla era conocida como Blackwell Island. Smallpox es la única ruina en la ciudad de New York con el status de landmark. Luego de ser un hospital sirvió como escuela y hospital de entrenamiento para enfermeras, Home for the Nurses and the Maternity and Charity Hospital Training School. Esta institución se mudó a Queens en 1950 y desde entonces quedó sin usar la estructura. Most of Kings Cross (formerly Battle Bridge), home now to Google, Facebook and media giants such as The Guardian, was razed to the ground to facilitate St Pancras, originating links to the resources of the North via The Great Northern and The Midland Railway Line. Howeson's 'Smallpox Hospital, Battlebridge' (1/2 above), constructed in the late 1700s, must have been at the heart of London before being relocated to Highgate to create space for 'The Great Northern Waiting Room II' (2/2 above). Feet of Angels comprises 30 drawings by AH that explore the social history and politics of a metropolis on the move whilst celebrating the muses that she most admires such as Piranesi, esteemed for his fantastical engravings and drawings of neoclassical architecture. Howeson's drawings are rich in art history from classical to contemporary masters, from Giotto to de Chirico. Her drawings create veils of time where ghosts from the past inhabit modernity.
