Charles Leclerc won the race for Scuderia Ferrari and became the first Monegasque driver to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix, dedicating the victory to his lost longtime friend. 2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣2️⃣ Michael Schumacher led home a Ferrari 1-2 in a Belgian GP that was rather boring, even by the standards of the era. By this point in his career Schumacher already held several records and by winning at Spa-Francorchamps, he added another one. This was his 10th win of the season, breaking the record for the most wins in a single season which was previously held by Nigel Mansell and himself. 1️⃣9️⃣8️⃣5️⃣ Sportscar racing was rocked by tragedy during the summer of the year. Jonathan Palmer had been injured during practice for the Spa 1000kms but worse was to come during the race. World Endurance champion Stefan Bellof was killed when he crashed at Eau Rouge after 77 laps. 1969 Porsche 908 LH (Chassis no 908-023) - There were plenty of initial issues with the 908 on its introduction in 1968. After development, in its closed cockpit and spyder derivation, it ultimately proved a very successful car for Porsche in 1969. It is overshadowed by the hugely successful 917, particularly as in contrast to the 917 it never won at Le Mans; however it did come second to a GT40 by the smallest winning margin ever. The 908 LH (‘Long tail’) looks very slippery and aerodynamic, but it was actually a very hard car to drive at top speed, as it tended to weave at around 200mph. Works driver Brian Redman reputedly said about the car “it scared me stupid” before then setting a fastest lap and new track record at Spa. To help with the stability issues some of the LH cars were fitted with a “dynamic” rear wing that moved in response to air pressure, lowering on one side and rising on the other to even out the pressure and stabilise the car. Chassis 908-023 is pictured here at FOS2023 as part of the Porsche 75th Anniversary display where it was entered and driven by Claudio Roddaro. It was built at the beginning of 1969 as a works racer. Vic Elford and Brian Redman qualified the car in first place for the 1969 24 hours of Daytona. It was modified to a spyder body and in 1970 raced under Martin Dechent in the Martini Racing Team livery at the 1,000km races at Monza, Spa and the Nürburgring with various drivers, including Dechent himself. In 1972 the car transferred to Frenchman Christian Poirot and his Auto Bourse team. He raced the car at Le Mans in 1975, but it did not finish after completing nearly 250 laps. Both producers still build fabulous race cars . One is German one is British , one car is for sale , one is not . The Porsche 910 chassis number 25 is priced at $3,250,000 . The Ginetta G12 chassis number 10 is not for sale but priceless to me . Two very rare cars both beautiful both lightweight with impeccable history , this 910 competed in the Targa Florio in ‘67 while this G12 raced in the ‘67 Spa 1000km . Chassis 035 was one of eight 917 Kurzhecks used by the Gulf Oil-sponsored John Wyer Automotive Engineering squad during the 1971 season. Porsche had recruited Wyer’s team to manage the 917 competition programme for 1970 and 1971 to enable the factory to concentrate on development. Throughout its career, chassis 035 raced under the identity of 015 for carnet reasons. The real chassis 015 (another JWAE Gulf car) had returned to Porsche at the end of 1970. 035 made its debut at the opening round of the 1971 World Sportscar Championship: the Buenos Aires 1000km. It was allocated to Pedro Rodriguez and Jackie Oliver who came home second in the race behind the sister car of Jo Siffert / Derek Bell. JWAE next ran 035 at the Brands Hatch 1000km three months later (round four). Rodriguez / Oliver qualified fourth but retired with fuel feed problems. Everything came good for 035 at the Spa 1000km five weeks later. Rodriguez and Oliver qualified third. Together with the pole-starting sister car, the Gulf 917s controlled the race from start to finish; Rodriguez / Oliver took the win with and second placed Siffert / Bell were the only car not to be lapped. Chassis 035 made its final two appearances at Watkins Glen towards the end of July where the World Sportscar Championship finale and a Can-Am race were held over consecutive days. 035 was allocated to Derek Bell and Richard Attwood who qualified fourth on the grid for the 6 Hour World Championship contest. They finished third although their race (like that of the other Gulf 917) was hampered by a rash of punctures and rain-soaked ignition leads. The next day, Derek Bell drove 035 in the Can-Am race. By this time, the Group 5 917s were not in the same league as the unlimited Group 7 machinery. Bell qualified 15th and finished eleventh. Afterwards, chassis 035 was retired from active duty. O GP de Mônaco de 1984 ficou eternizado com a grande performance de Senna debaixo de uma chuva torrencial que provavelmente lhe renderia a sua primeira vitória na F1, não fosse o término prematuro da corrida após pedidos desesperados de Prost que via o jovem brasileiro se aproximando mais a cada volta. O que quase ninguém lembra daquela corrida é que, além de Senna, outro jovem e promissor piloto fazia uma exibição de gala com um carro bem fraco. O Stefan Bellof 🇩🇪 havia largado com 20º, e último, com sua Tyrrell 012. Sua corrida foi impecável tanto quanto a de Senna e ele terminaria a corrida em terceiro, caso não tivesse sido desclassificado por seu carro estar abaixo do peso permitido. Uma pena. O Tyrrell era um carro feio de dar dó e era movido pelo fraco Ford-Cosworth DFY V8. Reparem também como as exigências de segurança eram baixas na época. O corpo de Bellof fica muito, mas muito exposto para fora do cockpit do carro. Como comentei antes, Bellof era uma grande promessa do automobilismo. Sua vida acabou encurtada após um acidente fatal durante a prova de endurance dos 1000km de Spa-Francorchamps em 1985. The rain was present in mid-September on the Spa-Francorchamps track. Mike Thackwell and the Kouros Racing team, managed from Switzerland by Peter Sauber, debuted the Mercedes M117 V8-powered at round four of the World Sportscar Championship at Silverstone. Due to fuel restrictions at the time, the engine was made as efficient as possible. The production-based block was developed by Swiss engineer Heini Mader. It had a maximum output of 720 cv, but the unit was limited to 650 cv for fuel economy purposes. All eyes were on the small team that was putting pressure on the mighty Porsche and Jaguar factory teams. Along with the likes of Henri Pescarolo, Johnny Dumfries, Manuel Reuter and Jean-Louis Schlesser, the Kouros C9s contested just five WSC events, achieving excellent results. They placed in the top three fastest qualifiers in every race except Le Mans. However, precisely in the Sarthe, the Kouros C9 set the fastest lap of that year. The Ford Cosworth-powered car featured a distinctive rear wing and striking BASF livery and made its debut in Group C racing at the Monza 1000 kms race where it failed to finish. The 1982 Spa-Francorchamps 1000 kms sports car race gets underway, with Jacky Ickx (Porsche 956) at the head of the field. Riccardo Patrese (Martini Lancia LC1) would take the lead before the first lap was over, ahead of Marc Surer (Ford C100) and Piercarlo Ghinzani (Lancia LC1) with Ickx in fourth after a measured first lap. The Ghinzani/Michele Alboreto battled the Ickx/Jochen Mass Porsche hard but ultimately problems for both of the Lancia crews meant that Ickx and Mass won the race ahead of their teammates Derek Bell and Vern Schuppan.
