It’s called Colorful Colorado for a reason! Another stop on our route home from Las Vegas was a humble little mountain town called Ouray. Talk about a breath of fresh air! This town features a small grocery store, a brewery, hot springs, and much more. Hike: Perimeter Trail - there is a hike through the mountains going around the entirety of the town which features endless mountain views, waterfalls, and wildflowers. This is a 6 mile loop so don’t forget to pack snacks and plenty of water! Campground: Ouray KOA Holiday - beautiful campground with friendly and helpful staff! We can right when the campground was opening up for the season so there weren’t many people there. It almost felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. Just got home from a three day adventure through the San Luis Valley with my beautiful wife @l.e.i.l.a.n.ii and our sweet dogs. It was the first trip we took in the camper and it was a blast. We left late Sunday evening didn't get to Smith reservoir until 3 am and really couldn't see anything but found a spot by the water. The next day we took our inflatable kayak out on the reservoir and spend the evening exploring the Sand Dunes, watching the sunset go down on the valley from as high as we could get on the dunes. That night we set up camp at the San Luis State Wildlife Center then spent the most of the next day walking along the river at the dunes. Later that night we set up camp at the Great Sand Dunes Recreational And Hot Springs, had dinner with the great Mayor of Alamosa, my Uncle Ty, and then spent the next day enjoying the springs and driving home! Hidden gem alert! About an hour away from Las Vegas is a fantastic kayaking location and beautiful campground. Welcome to the Colorado River! Clear enough to see to the bottom of the river. The campground is the Willow Beach Campground. Electric and water hook-up and a dump station on the way out. The campsites are completely private, we felt like we were the only ones there! Amazing views all around! Also, for those traveling cross country with their campers but don’t want to take up the bed of your truck with kayaks, give the inflatable kayaks a shot! This was my first full time camper assignment. I loved it! I stayed at the Las Vegas KOA. It was how you would expect a city campground to me. Spaces were tight and no picnic table/fire ring provided. Inside the campground was safe but I wouldn’t recommend walking outside the campground due to high crime rate in the area. This campground had laundry on site so that made it easy for me constantly having to wash scrubs. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. They would hold Amazon packages in their office so nothing would get stolen. Only thing I would do differently is stay on the Boulder Highway section of the campground. They seemed to be geared more toward travelers with more palm trees and sitting areas. I stayed on the S Nellis part of the KOA. It was still fine! I worked at the Spring Valley ER. They were good at keeping a 4:1 ratio. Right after my start date they did begin canceling contracts due to over hiring. They cut pay about two months in. Which was not a surprise as they seems a common theme across the country right now. Staff were very friendly/helpful and seemed very used to travelers. A Las Vegas ER is just how you would expect it. Overall, I’ll definitely miss the experience and fun I had in this city and would return to the city itself for an assignment. Step 3: Preparing for winter in the Poconos. 🥶 As I'm watching the leaves begin fall, I become more and more bummed out that cold weather is approaching. I unfortunately do not have a 4 season camper so I'm going to have to make special preparations to keep warm and to keep my pipes from freezing. I am continuing to be quite the regular at @loweshomeimprovement . I bought 1-inch foam board and HVAC tape to build a makeshift skirt around my camper and insulation to wrap around the poop chute to help me survive until I head out of here in January. I also purchased a heated hose off or Amazon to assisted with avoiding frozen pipes. My other purchase to keep warm is a nice and safe heater that I also purchased off Amazon. Claire doesn’t typically come on our family trips, but she got to this time and seemed quite content about it! ☺️ The boys were so cute the morning we packed up to drive home — it was chilly so I tucked them in with a big blanket and set Claire between them...they couldn’t get over how sweet it was and said they were almost going to cry real tears because of it ☺️💞😆 This fluffy girl is 12 now and I’m feeling the feels of her being in her “elder” years. Soaking up all the cuddles and giving her all the belly rubs. She’s been the most easy going good girl of a pup all these years! 💗
✨ I’m never not struck by the incredible scenery of where we live. The drive back home (a little over two hours) was no exception. From these rolling dry hills to rows and rows of wine grapes to the misty marine layer by the ocean where we also saw a lot of recently burned ground. Closer to home we spotted the area where helicopters recently dumped red fire suppressant during yet another wildfire. Give us a couple more months and these hills will turn green again and it’ll be our rainy winter season 🙏🏻🙌🏻☔️🙏🏻
#Balance : RV style 😋 Planning food for this trip was a new experience for me — picture a mini fridge, small two burner stovetop, small microwave and sink. Before we left I sautéed a couple bags of my favorite leafy greens, steamed a bunch of broccoli, and made pulled pork in the instant pot. That worked great for salads and sandwiches both. I also brought tuna packets, feta, EBTB, and balsamic vinegar which is what all I added to the “bowl” pictured here. I knew I didn’t want a weekend without veggies if I could help it and didn’t want to have to really cook in the camper. There was a good bit of storage for pantry stuff, so we fit more than enough in the dry food/snack realm too — most notably our fave bars, Chomps beef sticks, and nuts. And of course all the s’mores things! 🔥 The camp site was soooo packed the first night we were there, by the second we were one of only a small handful. We lucked out with a great group of neighbors who were there with friends and they had a 7 year old daughter who the boys loved hanging with. We now have corn hole boards (with lit holes like these!) on our Christmas list for Santa 😄📜🎄
🛣🏕 Gary’s been talking to the boys for a long time now about going camping, it’s been that topic they go back to for a fun distraction — planning, considering different aspects...well earlier this month Mr. Capable himself installed a hitch on my car and reserved us a camper through this Air Force base’s Outdoor Recreation facility, got us a campsite a couple hours north, and this past weekend we had our first camping adventure! It was nice to get away (there was almost no service where we were) and a good test of how the 5 of us (including Claire 🐶💕) could handle sharing a small space and living differently from at home or hotel. It was dry and in the 90s all weekend up there so we were very thankful for the unit’s A/C!
