Staff Pick! 🌹 Vendor Receivables Clerk Kim Sandoval started her Gelson’s career in our floral department — and fell in love with our roses. “We would get a new delivery of locally-grown flowers every two days. They’re very fresh and they smell amazing, like they’re freshly cut!” she explains. Kim created bouquets and floral arrangements for customers; she says the most popular flowers were the red and white roses, particularly around Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. “One time, for Valentine’s Day, this guy asked me to wrap three dozen roses,” she recalls. “It was my first time doing that large of a bouquet. He told me that he was proposing to his girlfriend that day! It’s so fun to be able to be part of moments like that.”

In the woods where I grew up, I remember being enamored by the congregation of these bright green, fairy-like umbrellas that seemed to magically appear each spring. A North American native, it produces a small flower under its leaves that resembles an apple blossom and in autumn bears a lemon shaped fruit. It has been used traditionally by Native Americans for food, medicine, and even as an insecticide. However, because it contains a toxin called podophyllotoxin, it needs to be handled with extreme caution. The Mayapple has always evoked a sense of wonder for me.
