All the tiredness, gasping for air, and joint pains magically disappeared once we laid our eyes on the stunning 360-degree view. It was like stepping into a postcard. Sure, the clouds played hide and seek, blocking our view of Mt. Pandim, Mt. Kumbhakarna, and Mt. Kanchenjunga, but just as the sun started its descent, the clouds parted like curtains revealing these majestic mountains bathed in red hues. It was like a scene straight out of a movie, absolutely breathtaking! You know, hikes and treks are not just about reaching the destination; they’re about the journey itself. They teach us the art of patience and show us the beauty of the unknown. It’s like a metaphor for life, reminding us that there’s always more to explore, experience, and learn. Plus, there are no VIP treatments based on who you are or what you know. Out there, in the wilderness, we’re all just part of nature, and it’s a humbling experience. It’s a gentle nudge to respect and cherish the world around us. #StoriesFromSikkim #Sikkim2023 edition 2. Story of The Moon Rise As we sat for dinner on Day 1 after the trek, I witnessed the bright spot in the sky. It just kept getting brighter by the minute. Definitely not one of those mountain lights and it wasn’t the time for sunrise either, but man, the sky was lighting up like crazy! So, I turn to Sanman ji, our main trek guide, and ask ‘What’s that light up there in the sky?’ Surprised at my question, he very casually replies, ‘It’s the moon rise’. I swear, I had never heard of such phenomenon before, but dude, I was pumped. @nag_nagesh was just as stoked when he heard Sanman ji’s answer. We’re sitting there, grinning like kids, eyes glued to the sky, watching the moon go higher and higher. It was truly magical. Totally worth the crazy steep paths and all those breaks. In that moment, none of it mattered. Sunsets have no doubt been my favourite. Now, I’m all about those moon rises, man. #StoriesfromSikkim 1. Story of the horse’s hump rock If I were also to share my #Diaries series, I’d want it to be #SikkimDiaries at this point. I haven’t shared any story from the last trek. Not that I don’t have any. It’s just that I didn’t sit to pen down experiences. But #Sikkim2023 album in my gallery tells me stories every time I scroll through it. They are all absolutely worth sharing. So, let me spill the beans about this insane spot from my latest trek – the Bajre Dara Trek in Sikkim, 2023 edition. Picture this: you’re hiking along this narrow path and then, boom, you stumble upon this rock formation that legit looks like a hump on a horse’s back. Let me name it the horse’s hump rock. Now, getting there ain’t a walk in the park. You gotta navigate this super narrow path, balance on the edge, and then scramble up onto this hump. And guess what? Once you’re up there, it’s like a freaking rollercoaster of adrenaline. On one side, there’s a deep valley, on the other, a sketchy rock path, and in front of you? Yep, you guessed it, another drop into the abyss. Talk about scary as heck! But let me tell you, the view from up there is totally worth the heart palpitations. It’s like the mountains are staring you down, the breeze is giving you a high-five, and the sunlight? Oh, it’s just painting the whole scene like a masterpiece. Shoutout to my trek buddy @nag_nagesh for not bailing on me when we both froze in awe at the jaw-dropping panorama. And a louder shoutout to our guide @mahabir_wakchali for knowing exactly when to call for those much-needed breaks – whether it’s for killer views, shade from the scorching sun, or just some random plant trivia. Flagging off my North East adventure, with Sikkim. Albeit, I'd always wanted to start it with Meghalaya, but maybe sometimes, things to have wait, for the good. But soon enough. When I zeroed down on Sikkim, I scribbled down the places I had listed down, last year. Well, my favourite pastime is researching about places & noting it down, so when I decide to travel there, it becomes the starting point of planning. Maybe that's how I know about a lot of places and stories, even before visiting them. After a lot of reaching out, it led me to Sanjay, a local who left his job and rolled into tourism. I had a rough plan. But even before the day I left, I had no certainty of the permits & detailed plan. I placed trust on him who helped me plan it, after I told him what places I wanted to go to. With excitement and the usual pre trip butterflies, I left, and landed at Bagdogra and a five hour taxi journey later, I reached the hostel at Gangtok. Met two friends of 24 years; it was their first time travelling without a group. They were intrigued by how my parents agreed to send me solo, & quipped I was lucky. Well, maybe, I'm glad to have that relationship with my mom. She had her questions when I first travelled solo earlier this year, but when I came back happy and safe, it made both of us more confident. They said with patriarchy at their home, it wasn't possible. One of them was a CA, married; her in-laws remarked how would their son manage without her. This is where the problem is, I feel. The thought of having to be managed, taken care of, first by parents & then by the wife. Patriarchy is like politics, it's everywhere, down and dirty. There are many things that I keep challenging to date, to put my perspective into things. Not easy, but small wins and a long way to go. I said I heavily despised it & hoped I'd never find myself in this loop. With that, I hit bed for some sleep. He sent me the taxi details for the next day, to leave for North Sikkim. I sat at the station, waiting for 3 hours for it arrive from the garage. It was a shared taxi, wanted to go economical; did not like the group I was travelling with, felt miserable. Images would have been more beautiful if the 'Shy Mountains' were visible. Nomads living in this region say that the mountains here don't allow people to take pictures. As soon as you reach to take pictures the mountains hide behind the clouds. These domestic yaks belongs to my cousin. She has 190 yaks, both female and male. In a world where language is considered as the front door to any culture, Sikkim is home to three of India’s most endangered languages – Lepcha, Bhutia and Limbo. It is a terrible loss when we lose a language, because with it a world of unique culture ceases to exist. During our journey to explore more about this erstwhile kingdom we learnt of many such small nuances of Sikkimese culture. Our Sikkim connoisseur spoke about about - Majhi, a language that used to be spoken by the members of the Majhi tribe who used to work along the river Teesta as farmers, fishermen and as boatmen. But as of today there are no more speakers… This left us with a feeling of melancholy, for a language and culture lost forever that we had never known.. Have you too felt that anytime?
