#BookReview : 'The House With a Thousand Stories' by Aruni Kashyap Pablo, a young man, visits his ancestral village, Mayong in Assam to attend a wedding. He is initially surprised at the sharp contrast between Mayong and the city life that he has been accustomed to living in. There is a culture shock. He gets to hear wild gossip, secrets, funny stories, the danger looming in the village owing to insurgency--retired or otherwise. Then, we are introduced to the cousins, uncles, aunts, and everyone in the Bishoya family tree.  There is an impending disaster hinted quite early in the book. How the characters arrive at those situations form the crux of the story.  The 'why' and 'how' is elucidated towards the end of the novel. There are new surprises, too, as the story unfolds and each thread weaves into the main narrative effortlessly. The book is rightfully named so.  As the author pulls me into this journey, I get to live in Assam vicariously. My favourite characters are the progressive Prosanto-da, the shy cousin Mridul, and the bitter Oholya-jethai, one that I Ioved even before her backstory was revealed. I have a thing for chaotic characters. Pablo's naivety and innocence is also a delight reading about.  It's without a doubt that the book builds up to a disaster in the lives of the Bishoya family; one that tugs at your heart strings. Having said that, the aftermath morphs into a hopeful ending. And I love how the author decided to end it that way. This gem of a book 'The House With a Thousand Stories' contributes to the political discourse of the Indian North-East, while perfectly balancing it with the familial plot lines, a surprising romance, gossips, secrets, and a sad albeit thought-provoking and uplifting story.  The writing is close-to-home, beautiful, and not to mention, precise and fast-paced. Add to that vivid descriptions of the village of Mayong in Assam. The sadors worn by the women, the regional flowers, the food--all add a lovely flavour to the story.  As a reader and author from Manipur, I could relate to the life. Highly recommended.  Looking forward to reading more of your works, Aruni Da. @arunikashyap

My father sent me this today. Ever since the the publications about the Portrait of a Willow Woman started pouring in, he asked me to remind him a day before the release of the article in the Shillong Times so that he can ask his friend to get a copy of the newspaper as my family is currently vacationing in our ancestral village in Bihar. He doesn't believe in the digital world, he only trusts the print world. Also, because he can save the paper or properly file it up. And years later when I'd return home, he would probably open his files and show the paper proudly with his pumped chest subtly hinting at the fact the he has tucked it safely till date. But when the article was out, I didnt even know. So when I found out, he was paranoid to learn. He immediately called his friend to get a copy. And asked him to click a picture and send it to him. And then he sent it to me. He was finally happy. I do hope he is making sense out of my profession as after I completed my documentary, he seemed unhappy as there was no song. He asked me on various occasions as to why I didn't have a song. Well there are countless things but one important anecdote is that even after I shifted to Mumbai post the completion of screenplay writing course at ftii, he would still call me everyday and ask me to fill a form for a govt. exam. And it went on for more than a year. Heartbroken and dejected, I would tell him to not call me if he has to talk about govt. exams so gradually he stopped talking about govt. exams but every now and then he'd subtly tell that it'd be nice if I give it a try. And I would continue to revolt. With this, I hope he has finally understood that I'm not going to give a govt. exam anymore. And he finally seems happy. . . . . . . . . . . #fatherdaughterstories #anecdotes #filmmaking #PortraitOfAWillowWoman #femalefilmmakers #femaledirector #shillong #shillongtimes #mumbaidiaries #storiesfromnortheast #artistofinstagram #artistofmumbai #stuttgartfilmfestival #meghalaya #meghalamonitor #germany #filmfestival

THE HOUSE OF A FREEDOM FIGHTER AT JAMUGURI, ASSAM, North-East India. Written by Sanjukta Saikia Baruah: "Our Grandfather was Freedom Fighter Late Madan Chandra Saikia. he was born in the year 1902 in Jamagurihat, on the North bank Trunk road of Assam. He was married to Late Brinda Bala Saikia, she gave him moral support during his active involvement for freedom of the Nation. He even left school in 1921 while he was in the 10 standard at Tezpur high school. Madan Chandra Saikia as a freedom fighter took active part in the 'Quit India' movement in the year 1942. He was arrested and imprisoned for few months. Upon his release, he again devoted himself to the freedom struggle till India achieved her Independence in 1947. During hthose days while he was away from the family, his wife Brinda Bala gave him all the support managed the house, as well as, raised five children to be well educated and good citizens of the country. He lived a simple and austere life as an ideal leader. On completion of all his duties for the Motherland he set out to build a house for his family, which was completed in the year 1954. It was a small Assam-type house with all needs for a rural family of the time. It had a Bharal Ghar (food storage room), a Pukhuri (pond) etc. He died on 1st September, 1964 at an age of 62 years. After his passing at an early age, his younger son & our father Sri Pradeep Kumar Saikia continued to stay in the house along with his mother. He served as a High School teacher at Jamagurihat. Elder son late Girija Mohan Saikia retired as Chief Engineer of ASEB. The house had been through some renovation carried out later by our father. Today our parents stay in the house and our mother Leenu Saikia keeps herself busy with housekeeping. I and Sampurna, the two daughters, being married, are only visitors to the house." #assam #northastindia #india #StoriesFromNorthEast www.oknortheast.com . . . . . #oldhouse #home #architecture #house #oldhouses #home #vintage #architecturephotography #travel #history

The kind of love that precedes every other; the love for TRAVEL. Huddled in cold, faces too warm from the campfire and backs too cold because of the wind, somewhere under the canopy of gazillion stars, with no sense of time or date or day, the only thought that looped in my mind was 'is there anything else that could be beautiful than this?'. I'm no expert in the subject but the thought of capturing the stars have always mesmerised me. Here is my attempt at photographing the night sky in it's full glory. A figment of my undying love for travel in the form of photographs. This is exactly how I saw it! As the night seeped in and the campfire grew brighter, this piece of log we were resting our backs on glowed in red against the dark sky. Like an ornament reflecting all it's hidden beauty. #celebratelove #traveldiaries #storiesfromnortheast #starrynight #stars #skufullofstars #celestialbodies #skypictures #bouquetofstars #astrophotography #nightscapes #nightphotography #canonpictures #shotoncanon #krangshuri #meghalaya #travellingindia

Being always fascinated by images and the stories they tell, Subhadeep (@shubhadeeep) became a picture researcher and now he explores places and shares their stories with his photography. "A few years back when I had started working, I always used to wish of going to the North East. After I moved to Kolkata, I got a little closer to this wish of mine and last year planned for my Meghalaya trip. I had always been awed by lakes and waterfalls in the mountains and maybe that is why I lost my heart in Meghalaya when I saw the beauty of the place." By planning in advance and with support from his colleagues and seniors, he manages well between traveling and his profession. While he has explored places in Meghalaya like Cherrapunji, Tyrna Village, Mawlynnong, Dawki, Mawsmai Caves, Double Decker root bridge, Rainbow falls, Nohkalikai Falls, he has plans to cover Arunachal and Nagaland by the end of the year. . "Traveling helps me get in touch with myself. Traveling does give a break from the daily mundane routine of the 9 to 6 job. But it is a lot more to me. It is important to experience life out of the comfort zone once in a while. Experiencing new cultures, new food, new roads is always worthwhile. This quest for something other than the ordinary is what probably inspires me to travel." . Subhadeep from his trek to Double Decker living root bridge, "It was a 3,500 step journey down the hill. A few villagers and a very few co-trekkers greeted us on our way. After descending through many patches of stones, we came across two hanging bridges over rain-fed rivers. The bridges were made with iron cable and supported with bamboo in some parts. It takes around 15 years to build one such bridge. It continues to grow stronger with time. The bridge shakes and swings above the river, making it quite an adventure. On one of the bridges, we stopped to look down at the turquoise water of the river below and the surrounding forests. The Umngot River is a completely clear waterway, quite uncommon in India." . Best wishes to Subhadeep from team @trebbymate on his journeys further to the unexplored regions of North-East India.

A dental surgeon in love with exploring forests, waterfalls, mountains and also writing about them, Rashmi (@piscean_girl__ )is from North-East India which makes it convenient to explore the Seven Sisters with her hectic schedule. Being a busy doctor doesn't keep her from exploring and fulfilling her wanderlust and her travel bucket list is extending long. The more she travels the more her list extends and she hopes to manage time for her future trips. " Well, something that drives me always is - Tomorrow may never come. " Rashmi from her trip to Sacred Groove Forest in Meghalaya, "There are these times when I can't get enough of expressing through words, through my own ways, through art and anything that I find as ways to deal with. Then there are these times when I'll be like nope! Nothing. Blocking every other thing to the point of feeling nothing. Just all blank, numbed and walled up. Words locked up deep somewhere. Today is like such a day. Hope I can get past this phase with enough resiliency." . . . "The wildflowers are the one he sought. The one of raw fragrance The one of delicate essence The one of wilderness, Emancipation and freedom. Bold enough to mark her territory, Soft enough to attract colorfully. Illusory enough to float away In butterfly fantasy Crazy enough to chase it in reality. Ephemerality never was her problem For she lived and loved fiercely Not counting days but living moments. To her joy and no lament" - A Poem by Rashmi

Wei Sawdong falls; one of the most surreal sights to behold. This three-tier falls (photographed here is just the base) gets it’s name because it looks like a pool - ’wei’ and sawdong means square in shape. It is quite a fun trek (and daunting) as there is no proper path to walk and have to navigate on the passage and stairs made of the bamboo trees. Rainbow falls; One of the postcard destination and the best-kept secret of Meghalaya. The effort to get here can be the most wearisome and taxing after having to descend the 3000+ steps, trek past the bridges of living roots and the tedious final ascent of more stairs that are stony, broken and earthy. But the sight that greeted us after all this mammoth effort is indeed a salve to sore body and eyes. The pearl white strip of the roaring falls, the beckoning rainbow, the sparkling blue water all around and the green forests left me overwhelmed and in awe. It's magical how this sight makes one forget the long, arduous journey embarked upon until you have to ascend those daunting 3000+ steps on the way back. #buttotallyworthit #travelstories #storiesfromnortheast #nongriat #rainbowfalls #eastkhasihills #northeast #livingroot #suspensionbridge #rainbow #waterfalls #trekking #journey #nature #beauty #meghalaya #travellingindia #incredibleindia #travelgram

Few pictures from the heritage walk to the Kigwema village; As we explored the beautiful settlement, the one aspect which greatly drew my attention was the kitchens in houses of the Khel (clan territories) ranging from the ones in the huts to the most modern Naga kitchen. They are the hub for all household activities and are beautifully packed and adorned with various utensils and local produce. They also house huge bamboo baskets to store the harvested grains (not pictured) and hang the meat off the ceiling to smoke and cure them for consumption throughout the year. Most of the homes have open hearths that serves for heating the house during winters. Although there is not much known about the structural method followed to build these kitchens, what intrigued me most were the tactfully placed windows which act as single source of light that lit up the entire space during the day. Totally in love with the mood it creates and it sure does leaves you feeling warm and cosy. #travelstories #storiesfromnortheast #kigwema #heritagewalk #nagaland #villagelife #angamitribe #nagahouses #kitchens #livingspace #localarchitecture #villagehomes #architecture #people #lifeawayfromchaos #streetphotography #travelgram #travellingindia #northeast #tripwithwandermile #wandermile

There is quite a story behind this place and its name. The word ‘Banjhakri’ means a forest shaman. If we break it down further ‘Ban’ means primitive and ‘Jhakri’ means shaman. Shaman is a priest among certain people of northern Asia, regarded as one with healing and magical powers who can influence the spirits and bring about good and evil. And it is these Shamanistic practices that are depicted via the figurines in this theme park. Some of these depict rituals, some healing ceremonies and others the initiation process in the life of a shaman. It’s a bit too touristy, but understanding the history behind the figurines in the park leads you to many such interesting stories of the Sikkimese culture. #sikkimdiaries . . . . . . . . . . . #travelnortheast #incredibleindia #cntravellerindia #travelblogger #northeastdiaries #sikkimadventures #sikkimese #cultures #storiesfromnortheast #lovefortravel #travelfinds #fromwhereistand #waterfallsofinstagram #shotoniphone #lostinnature #oneplaceatatime #musingsofthewildflower
