Last week, in the Center, there was a little 12-year-old boy who had come for tuition and wanted to use the washroom. He was directed towards it and went ahead to use it. He came back and when asked if he had flushed, he replied that he had somehow managed to pour water inside the closet using the hand spray pipe! We showed him the flush lever and taught him how to pull it down. He was so amazed to see the water come from inside it. Immediately he ran out excitedly and told all his friends that the water comes from inside the closet!! After that, there was a long queue to use the facilities and check their friend's claim! Small things that we take for granted are so unique and awesome for these kids! Almost 20 and more kids are coming for tuition now. Some of them have not touched a book in a year. Some have been removed from their online classes due to non-payment of fees. It was a little tough to get them back to books, especially writing. It was designed by the illustrious Ramaswamy Chettiar, the man who brought discotheques to Madras in the 1940s. The art deco house was built on the same property as the Oceanic Hotel, an iconic landmark from Madras’ history. 75 years later, we unearthed photos of the glory days at Emmessaram — when garden parties with 5-course meals and celebrity guest lists were a weekly occurrence. There have been ups wnd downs and but by having the right people around you, it all gets better. I can proudly say that everything that I am today is only and only because of my parents and my older sibling and definitely some good friends. Talking about discrimination, then ummm ... yes, sometimes I have been discriminated but then if you think about it there has always been colourism in the world. Honestly, that's not even my fault as we live in a society with all kinds of people and the best you can do is ignore the negative side of the world. I run preschool enrichment programme for children called Top Toddlers @toptoddlers_ . I am also a baker and I run a side baking business under the brand name Fingertips @fingertipschennai Honestly, I never thought I would be a teacher. I always wanted to be a journalist and then a psychologist but I found myself much happier around children and the only way I could be close to them was by getting into the educational field. I was rejected for jobs only and only because of poor eyesight which is because of my skin condition. But I'm really glad that it happened else I would have never had the courage to start my own playgroup."
