Stopped by Straits Restaurant in Santana Row during a much needed get away with the girls. We had the Salmon Croquette Benedict and it was great. The hollandaise tasted like a bit like Kevin's Lemongrass Basil sauce and the potatoes were super flavorful. Then onto meet the long-staying Little Buntings, with a Common Cuckoo dropping in as Woodchat Shrikes appeared on every fence and bush and Glossy Ibises surrounded us! 😊 #FlywayBirding
We moved from The #Straits to the Eastern side of #Doñana to avoid the severe #levante Calmer conditions gave us some excellent #Birding ! Little #Swifts zoomed about #calima laden orange skies, Iberian Yellow Wagtails contrasted against the darkening skies as Gull-billed, Little and Caspian #Terns arrived ! Pools with Marbled and White-headed #Ducks and Red-knobbed Coot! A Little Gull also avoiding stormy conditions as bright pink Slender-billed Gulls displayed and Ospreys fished the shallows. Which of these 'talapa' do you like best? These are batik-printed headgear belonging to the Chitty Melaka community of Southeast Asia. When #Tamil traders migrated to Southeast Asia in the 15th and 16th centuries CE, many married local #Malay and #Chinese women in the Melaka Sultanate. Their descendants in the #Straits are known as the Chitty #Melaka or #Peranakan Indians. 'Chitty' is for people from #Chettinad district in Tamil Nadu and 'Melaka' is #Malacca in #Malaysia. The community's customs are a rich mix of source cultures, including this headgear which borrows from traditional Tamil thalapa and adds a twist of Malaysian/Indonesian #batik to it. The triangular patch at the front makes it distinctive. This talapa is also called 'kopiah' in #Malay. Sehbak Serani or Sehbak Cuping (braised pigs' ears) The delights of nyonya cuisine given a twist by the local Malacca Seranis (Kristang). This old recipe uses braised pork in a salad of lettuce, cucumber, pineapple (introduced to the region by the Portuguese) and Tofu puffs. The salad "dressing" is homemade chili sauce (nyonya chili cuka) and reduced braising liquid. The salad is topped with crushed peanut brittle (a favourite local snack). The Gelatinous ears with its crunchy cartilage center gives this dish an interesting mouthfeel. The Peranakan Sekbak/sehbak refers to stewed pork belly in a soy syrup flavoured with shallots, galangal, star anise and cinnamon. All very typical chinese pantry ingredients except for the Galangal. Galangal is also part of the ginger family and a key ingredient used in many Thai, Indonesian, and Malay recipes.The early Chinese immigrants to the Malay Peninsular were known to adopt local ingredients in their cooking but retained chinese techniques like braising, steaming and stir frying. A fairly clear morning and westerly wind enabled the migratory gate to be briefly open on the eastern side of The #Straits yesterday with Short-toed and Booted #Eagles with hordes of Black #Kites crossing. However soon conditions deteriorated and rain swept in from the West blocking further north bound passage. Shutting the gateway of The Straits this impressive #Milanada of c.1,200 Black Kites formed on private land to roost and wait for conditions to improve before heading further into the #Iberian peninsula! #FlywayBirding
