Introducing "Street Sellers," Greene Naftali's debut exhibition featuring the renowned artist Lubaina Himid. A trailblazer of the Black Arts Movement, Himid's work illuminates the complexities of labor, migration, and the human experience within empire. Her latest series of paintings celebrates the dignity of work, portraying elegantly attired vendors amidst their trade. These figures, spanning various historical contexts, reclaim the narrative of labor from street-level hawkers to 17th-century merchants. Through expansive full-length portraits, Himid amplifies Black voices in art history, filling archival gaps and crafting narratives of empowerment: "I paint it into existence." Lubaina Himid (b. Zanzibar, 1954) lives and works in Preston, England. A Commander of the British Empire, she is an emeritus professor at the University of Central Lancashire. Himid is currently the subject of a solo exhibition at The Contemporary Austin (traveling to the FLAG Art Foundation, New York in September).
