Name: Christina Yavdoshnyak Year/Degree Program: Senior, BS Integrative Neuroscience and BA Music About: Christina Yavdoshnyak, is a professional Ukrainian American singer-songwriter, pursuing a double degree in Music and Integrative Neuroscience. She has performed on the global stage in Canada, Ukraine and all throughout the United States. Recently, Christina began performing her original songs in concert which sparked her interest in exploring a different genre of music composition. This newfound inspiration led her to enroll in the Intro to Composition course at Binghamton University last semester. This semester, Christina collaborated with the writing department on the Word of Mouth project, culminating in the performance of her composition, “Unsung Lullaby for a War Across the World.” Anything you’d like people to know?: My first concert of the Ukrainian festival summer season will take place June 14-16 (Father’s Day Weekend) in Yonkers, NY. Christiaan VanZyl, a Queen’s University student in the Bachelor of Health Science program taking composition courses at the DAN School, has been named the winner of the Dundas Valley Orchestra 2024 Student Composer Competition for his orchestral work, Scenes from the Summit. In addition to receiving a $300 prize, his work will be performed in the Dundas Valley Orchestra on their May 26, 2024, concert. Christiaan is also a member of the violin section of the Queen’s Symphony Orchestra, and their conductor, Wolf Tormann, has already programmed a performance of Christiaan’s prize-winning composition on the Queen’s Symphony Orchestra’s winter 2025 concert. This week, Zachary Sloan @zachary_yale_sloan is premiering his new musical, “The Time the Axeman Came to Town,” on Saturday, April 13 at 7:30 in Casadesus Recital Hall. Here is a summary of the show: "The Time the Axeman Came to Town'' is a new musical based on the real-life events that occurred when a serial killer known as "the cleaver" targeted the Italian immigrant community in New Orleans in the late 1910s. The musical follows two Italian families, the Cortimiglias and the Jordanos, after the death of the Cortimiglias' two-year-old daughter Mary in a brutal attack by the cleaver; while the surviving Cortimiglias recover, Superintendent Police Chief Mooney works to figure out the cleaver's identity with Jefferson Parish Sheriff Louis H. Marrero, who pressures Mooney to arrest Frank Jordano, an innocent man, in order to save their jobs. On Saturday, April 6, join us for the world premiere performances of works written by students of the University of Calgary’s music composition program as part of the Land's End Ensemble's annual Student Composers’ Program. Hosted by composers Allan Gordon Bell and Vincent Ho, the group of students were provided with workshops, rehearsals, and feedback during their creative processes. Land’s End presents the students’ finished works for this afternoon and highlight their yearlong growth. The participants of this season’s Student Composers’ Program are Katie Levinson, Liezel Kruger, Peter Stambene and Jon Halverson. Also, in collaboration with Glenbow this concert will feature a special performance of “A Sybil Andrews Portrait” - three works composed by Juno Award-winning composers Jocelyn Morlock, Alexina Louie, and Allan Gordon Bell, inspired by Ms. Andrews’s paintings. Year/Degree Program: Senior year, BMus voice About: I'm a vocal performance major at Binghamton and I have performed in operas at the university like Mozart's Magic Flute, Ravel's Child and the Enchantments, Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea, and Humperdincks Hansel and Gretel. Last semester, I took an introductory course in music composition and after years of thinking that I wasn't creative enough to write music. I discovered that I really enjoyed it and I had been holding myself back by assuming that I couldn't do something when all I had to do was try! So in my last semester, I am now in Composition Seminar working with extremely smart and creative people, surrounded by new music and new ideas. It has also helped me better understand the pieces that I sing. I'm so glad that I decided to give composing a shot before I graduated! We are in our two month long composing unit, and we've got some amazing music being created! This young lady did something brilliant in her piece - she took the measure circled in blue and repeated them down a step (called a sequence) to create the measure circled in pink. Carrie Frey is a New York City-based violist, teacher, improviser, and composer focused on inquisitive collaborations and encouraging creativity in her students. An enthusiastic proponent of new music, she has premiered over 250 pieces. Frey is the violist of the Rhythm Method, “a group of individuals with distinct compositional voices and a collective vision for the future of the string quartet,” (I Care If You Listen) and a founding member of string trio Chartreuse and string quartet Desdemona. She has performed with many of New York City’s notable contemporary ensembles, including Wet Ink Large Ensemble, AMOC*, Talea Ensemble, Wavefield, Cantata Profana, and the International Contemporary Ensemble. Frey improvises as a member of Simone Baron’s genre-bending Arco Belo ensemble and with electroacoustic trio Hierophant (with Alex van Gils and Alec Goldfarb). Her compositions, described as “a moldering compost heap” (I Care if You Listen), have been performed by the Rhythm Method, Arco Belo, Adrianne Munden-Dixon, and Kal Sugatski. Her debut sonata album, The Grey Light of Day, with pianist Robert Fleitz, was released in 2016, and her first solo album, Seagrass: Works for Solo Viola, was released on Gold Bolus in December 2023. Carrie is a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory and the Manhattan School of Music Contemporary Performance Program, and is currently pursuing a doctorate at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. We are excited to welcome the ViMaDeAn Duo to DMICS 2024! Founded in 2010 at the Yale School of Music, the ViMaDeAn Duo has conducted workshops on three continents and worked with a variety of composers and artists to bring new compositions to diverse audiences around the world. Their recent appearances include performances at music festivals in Brazil, Russia, and France. Comprised of violinist Anastasia Petrunina and percussionist Denis Petrunin, ViMaDeAn strives to expand the repertoire for violin and percussion. They work closely with living composers to expand the original repertoire for such a unique instrumental combination. ViMaDeAn Duo has been the featured soloists with the “The Seasons” chamber orchestra, ARCO chamber orchestra, North Georgia Chamber Symphony and Ensemble Eclectica among others. Anastasia and Denis are both superb soloists in their own right, in addition to serving as concertmaster and principal timpanist, respectively, of the Augusta Symphony. Currently ViMaDeAn Duo is collaborating with several composers and multimedia artists on creating a program to raise awareness about natural disasters humanity is currently facing, in the hope of making a positive impact on the future of our planet. One of our great traditions at DMICS is our annual hike at Torrey Pines State Reserve. It’s a chance for everyone at the festival to enjoy our spectacular surroundings and to experience one of the most unique and delicate landscapes in California. With breathtaking views of the Pacific from atop cliffside trails, Torrey Pines is a true ecological treasure and represents one of the last undeveloped stretches of the Southern California coast. And it makes a great place to take our group photo! Innovation Award Winner from Music Academy Of The West, Konstantin Soukhovetski is an artist of singular vision bringing theater and music together while bridging classical and popular genres. This season, Konstantin premiered SPARKS, a composition created for him by award-winning composer, Polina Nazaykinskaya, and has appeared with Musimelange and the musicians of the New World Symphony in Miami, FL. Konstantin also gave the world premiere and recorded a new ballet of Ms. Nazaykinskaya - “Nostalgia” choreographed by Pascal Rioult of Rioult Dance at the Joyce Theater in New York City. Konstantin has appeared as an actor in both theater and film and is currently producing reality-webisodes The Real Pianists Of The Hamptons at Pianofest in The Hamptons where he is Artist in Residence since 2011. Konstantin is a recipient of over 15 awards and is an alumnus of The Juilliard School where he has earned his BM, MM, and AD degrees under the tutelage of Jerome Lowenthal. Born in Moscow to a family of artists, he studied at the Moscow Central Special Music School, under the auspices of the Moscow State Conservatory, with Anatoly Ryabov. Domenic Salerni is a violinist, composer, arranger, and teacher. A member of the multiple GRAMMY Award-winning Attacca Quartet, Domenic is based in Brooklyn, NY. As a musician with wide-ranging interests, Domenic is always excited to collaborate with creatives from all walks of life. Domenic was the first violinist of the Dalí Quartet from 2016-2020, where he collaborated extensively with musicians like Ricardo Morales and Olga Kern. The Dalí Quartet recorded the Brahms and Shostakovich piano quintets with Kern for Delos Records in 2019. With the Dalí Quartet, Domenic was a recipient of the Atlanta Symphony Talent Development Program’s 2019 Aspire Award. As a guest artist of the Chiarina Chamber Players, Domenic was a recipient of a 2020 Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Grant for the song cycle “The Best Cuisine” by Carlos Simon, which premiered with guest bass-baritone Carl DuPont in 2021. In 2020, as part of his response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Domenic helped set up the Philadelphia Musicians Relief Fund which has since raised over $100,000 in aid and continues to provide support for Philadelphia area musicians. Domenic can be found on albums released by Nonesuch Records, Sony Classical, Better Company Records, Loma Vista Recordings, Delos Music, and Artek, and his more experimental projects can be found on Bandcamp. For the fourth year running, powerhouse composer Polina Nazaykinskaya will be joining the faculty at the Del Mar International Composers Symposium! In addition to teaching lessons and seminars, Nazaykinskaya will lead courses in advanced ear training and conducting for all DMICS students. Nazaykinskaya’s work for both orchestra and dance has found a prominent place in the repertory of many major orchestras. Her first symphonic poem “Winter Bells” is in high demand every season by orchestras such as the Minnesota Orchestra and the Russian National Orchestra. She also has a longstanding relationship with RIOULT Dance NY, for whom she composed and conducted the original ballet “Nostalghia.” Since Fall 2021, Nazaykinskaya has been the Philharmonic Orchestra Conductor of the Greater Connecticut Youth Orchestras. Prior to her current position, she conducted the British Youth Music Theatre, the University of Southern Mississippi Orchestra, and the Russian Youth Symphony Orchestra. Nazaykinskaya graduated from the Tchaikovsky Conservatory College in Moscow as a composition/violin double major. She earned her Masters’ and Artist Diploma in composition at the Yale School of Music, and is currently a Doctoral Candidate at The Graduate Center CUNY under the mentorship of Tania León. Her honors and awards include Charles Ives Scholarship from The American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans. Nazaykinskaya is an Adjunct Lecturer of Composition at Brooklyn College Conservatory and a Teaching Artist at the Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven. We are very pleased to announce that Texu Kim will be joining the Del Mar International Composers Symposium for a second season! In addition to providing individual lessons to DMICS students, Prof. Kim will lead several seminars and will help to supervise our recording sessions of student works. Drawing on his personal affinity for humor, his background in science, and his fascination with everyday experiences, Kim’s work radiates positivity while demonstrating “surprising scope.” (San Diego Story) As a Korean-American, Kim explores the localization of imported traditions, incorporating cross-cultural elements into his work in “impressive and special” ways so that “many orchestras and conductors around the world are taking an interest in [his] music.” (KPBS) Ensembles across the globe have programmed Kim’s music, including the San Francisco Opera, Korean National Symphony Orchestra, Oakland Symphony, San Diego Symphony, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Alarm Will Sound, Ensemble Intercontemporain, London Sinfonietta, and the Verona Quartet. An assistant professor of music at San Diego State University, Kim formerly taught at Syracuse University, Portland State University, and Lewis & Clark College. Bresnick will join DMICS for the duration of the program and will work directly with our composition students in masterclasses and seminars. Hailed as “One of the great voices of his generation” (Fanfare), composer Martin Bresnick “has been indispensable as a teacher to the current generation of new composers, and his own music is sublime, with exquisite craft, an ear and heart for the beautiful, and a transparent, graceful and unselfconscious connection to the common musical materials all around us.” (George Grella) Bresnick was the recipient of the first Charles Ives Living Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Rome Prize, the Berlin Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Koussevitzky Commission, among many honors. Bresnick is also recognized as an influential teacher of composition, having taught at the Yale School of Music for over 40 years.
