Oh hi! 👋🏼 it’s been a while. I’m all good, but have been buried with work (the “other job”). I finished this mama and cubs just in time floor two important dates!. 1) I’m delivering this (and other goodies) to @provisionsmercantile TOMORROW and 2) this is my April submission for the @riverartsdistrictasheville theme of the month, “Cycles of Nature”. The sun has been shining brightly (not today), flowers are out, birds are singing, trees are sprouting and mama bears are emerging with their new babies 🐻. In Asheville it is impossible to not notice the cycles of nature….nature simply shows off here 💓

I have a thing for tiny pencils. I’ll use a pencil until I can’t possibly use it anymore…and the smaller it is, the more excited I am to find it in the bin full of pencils and pick it up to make some marks. The idea that this tiny pencil has touched MANY MANY paintings before fills me with inspiration. There is a story, or rather hundreds of little stories, that only the tiny pencil and me have been a part of. It also brings me back to childhood, the little girl in me looking through her pencil pouch to find the perfect one. I also have a thing for the tiny house in the horizon (swipe). 🏡

Black Bear (with Salmon) After numerous attempts, I finally got a bear with a salmon lol! Back during the Salmon Run on Vancouver Island, I spent all day watching Black Bears come and go from this river mouth. A massive male, probably the biggest Black Bear iv seen, always called dibs on the prime fishing spot, by aggressively chasing any competitors away. When he would leave, this smaller bear would take its spot, catch a fish, then head into the forest to feast. This cycle went on for weeks. Coastal BC is truly and magnificent place, I sat here for hours in the afternoon sun, eagles patrolled the coastal tree line, orcas and humpbacks breached offshore, otters, mink, seals and sea-lions hunted along the shoreline. This is definitely one of my all-time favourite photos! In the Khutzeymateen this past May, we were watching this massive grizzly bear stroll along the shoreline. His movements were deliberate and unhurried as it ambled along. He would occasionally pause to inspect the area for other bears (looking for a lady friend) and smell the air. The shoreline ended with his only option… entering the cool water. As the grizzly swam, he would dip his head beneath the surface for a few seconds before emerging with a powerful exhalation. With each breath, bubbles formed around its nose. These bubbles were like jewels, capturing and reflecting the sky and the towering mountains that frame the lake. This frame shows the split second before the bubble burst with the reflected sky and mountains painting a miniature landscape on the surface of the bubble. A ring formed, resembling a Tiffany bracelet at the top of it. What??? No way. If you look closely, you may even see a form of a sitting bear looking sideways in the water. It's a shot of a lifetime for me, where the bear and its surroundings are harmoniously connected in a scene that embodies the pure, unspoiled beauty of the Khutzeymateen. I have a lot of beginner artists that follow me (and I love it!), so I wanted to give you all my top 5 tips! 🎨 Practice: Regular practice is key to improving. Will you always feel like it? No. Will you go through periods of creative block? Yes. When that happens, sometimes the only cure is: practice! 🎨 Seek Feedback: when I was starting out, I had an amazing group of insta art friends (some are still my friends today!). And we would constantly share ideas and help each other out. This is so valuable! 🎨 Set Goals: I wasn’t great at this, but have gotten better!. Initially I said yes to everything (yes, everything)…with time I understood this meant I wasn’t focused and I was burnt out. Set small and big goals. Have a picture in your mind of what you are trying to achieve. It will make your decisions so much easier… and will help keep you on track. 🎨 Be unapologetically yourself: Cliche, I know. But there’s only one of you!. The people that you connect with, when you are being your authentic self, are the ones that will cheer you on and support you! 🎨 Stay Curious: I’m like a hummingbird and can’t stay on one thing for long. When I first started I thought this was a “con”. I would see so many successful and amazing artists focused on just one style, theme, technique. I thought that was what I had to do to be successful. Turns out that wasn’t true. I embrace wherever curiosity takes me and my collectors and the people that support me are always happy to come along for the ride. This goes back to being authentic!. What you see (an eclectic mix of subjects and styles on my insta) is what you get (if you were to take a peek in my brain!) Remember, embrace your own journey 💖

Another idyllic weekend in the #olympicnationalpark . Berries and wildflowers are ON. Swimming is grand. Mosquitoes are waning. Wasps nest are abundant.
