Carley Fortune got her hooks in me and fully dragged me into this story. Once again, as most of her books… the setting is basically its own character. This book is so deliciously P.E.I. and she captured the island and people so well. I thought this was probably her best offering so far, and honestly the trope everyone hated is GONE… and it was so refreshing. I also loved how this wasn’t just a pure romance, it was a love between friends, a love of a place and finding your family. Ugh, just good feels all around. Anyway, I literally could not put this down and finished it in less than 12 hours. If I could have called into work to finish it, I would have. I fell in love instantly with the Reddit thread and the way Justin and Emma so easily messaged back and forth. Their chemistry was immediate for me and just made perfect sense. Abby Jiminez does it again with a beautiful and heartfelt story that depicts how trauma can sneak its way into relationships without proper healing. 📚 Your new beach read publishes this week!!! 📚 Heartwarming! I felt like I was transported to that coastal setting on Adler Island, Maine right alongside Effie. I could smell the salty air and butter heating up for those fresh lobsters at Dougie’s lobster roll truck on the corner! The story centers around two former best friends, Effie Olsen and Ernie Callahan. Sixteen years ago, on the night of gradation, Ernie confesses he is in love with Effie. This sends Effie fleeing that island faster than she could get a ferry off of it. Effie goes on to become a professional chef and work in kitchens around the world. Adler Island may be tiny, but it turns out it is no slouch in the culinary world, with a Michelin-starred restaurant called Brown Butter sitting right on the coastal island and in need of a sous chef for the summer. Effie decides to return home for the first time in a long time and spend the summer working at Brown Butter. Effie makes another big mistake when she gets drunk and spends the night with the head chef Jarrod after her interview and job offer. Jarrod is not a great guy, and it’s made worse by the fact that if the news of their liaison gets out, her career is over. And when I tell you that you will absolutely despise Jarrod, I’m not kidding. He is the worst! I was so excited when Effie and Ernie finally run into one another a day after she arrives on the island. It took a few chapters longer than expected, which gave me time to get to know Effie. That girl is in her head constantly. Running into Ernie brought back the old, carefree Effie. It turns out Ernie works at the Brown Butter too, and things get complicated. But what I loved about this book is that it wasn’t overly angsty in terms of the relationship. Effie and Ernie have a beautiful love story and arc across the book. It seems that every time they end a relationship their ex’s end up finding true love with the next person they are with. Justin and Emma conjure up a plan that if they date each other and break up then they are bound to find their soulmate next. Emma, a traveling nurse convinces her bestie and only true family, Mary’s, to take a job in Minnesota so she can explore this curse breaking relationship. Things take a turn for the weird when Emma’s dead beat mother appears and is dating their landlord and head surgeon at the hospital they work out. On top of that, Justin is falling hard and fast for Emma. This was not apart of the plan. Justin is the definition of “if he wanted to he would.” He plans these elaborate dates and goes out of his way to make Emma feel heard and seen. Emma has a lot of trauma and internal struggles she is having to overcome. She has huge issues with abandonment and has never believed in love. When she starts falling hard for Justin her initial instinct is to run. The two of them have so much self work to do before they can even think about properly pursuing a serious relationship. This romance was so real which is why I loved it so much. Everything wasn’t sunshine and rainbows which is what we need in a real love story because that’s just not real life. I had no idea the impact it would have on me and the whirlwind of emotions I was about to undergo. I have since fallen down the rabbit hole of Abby Jimenez books and found myself only wanting more. When BOTM announced April’s selections, I was extremely excited to see that her new novel, 𝘑𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳, made it on the list. I have seen 𝘑𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳 talked about on pages all over Bookstagram ever since I’ve joined this wonderful community, and for good reason. If you ask me, this novel might just be another BOTY win for Jimenez. One of the things I’ve loved about Jimenez’s books is how they’re all entwined. Characters resurface from other books, pop music playing in the background is always either Lola Simone or Jaxon Waters, and you can’t forget how all of the characters can’t help but love Jimenez’s own Nadia Cakes Bakery. The setting in each novel is Jimenez’s own little universe, and with each book we get to explore a little bit more of it. I love revisiting characters to see how they’ve turned out, and each time I read one of her books, it’s like seeing an old friend. 𝘑𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳 follows Emma, a travelling nurse, and Justin, a now stay-at-home guardian to his three siblings. They’ve found each other after Emma relates to Justin’s viral Reddit thread about being cursed; every girl he dates finds her soulmate after they break up. With Emma’s toxic mother showing up, and Justin’s new guardianship role, their love may not be meant to be afterall... So, whether you’re an avid Abby Jimenez reader, or just beginning, 𝘑𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳 should be immediately added to your TBR. The characters are sweet and loveable, the struggles are raw and real, and the build up of love is gradual, constructed of small, tender moments. This read left me feeling like the aftermath of a long, warm hug. 5 stars was a no-brainer for me on this one.♥️
Shades of April. Broke my book buying ban for two beauties. I got There’s Always This Year from the library but it’s dense and I need to take my time with it. I’m so curious about James and seeing all the rave reviews. Other things made me happy only one made me mad. If you’re a teacher I don’t have to tell which slide makes my blood boil. But as @sona.rukmani said so well “it’s a canon event”. Every year a child must break the sharpener by putting into a way too small pencil. I gotta say this years culprit really takes the cake. As more people from Connor and Eleanor's past and present turn up on this tour suspicions begin to rise. Who among their group is trying to kill Connor and why? Eleanor races to figure out who the killer is before her unpublished book becomes a reality. The cover caught my eye but the story within kept me listening! This is such a fun playful read, perfect for cozy mystery lovers. Mack gives readers a glimpse into the world of publishing from the eyes of her main character, Eleanor. This story is light and original, Eleanor speaks to the readers, literally. Eleanor breaks the fourth wall while leading readers through her investigation. Overall this book was a great refresher and I cannot wait to see where this series goes! This audiobook is narrated by Elizabeth Evans. I read this one while traveling - airplanes, airports, uber rides - and it kept me hooked, invested, and wanting more. It’s the perfect book to add to your upcoming summer reading list. And here are my honest reviews about it without ant spoilers: It’s important for me to connect with the characters of the book and become a part of the plot feeling all their emotions till the end, and be submerged in the ocean of that feeling for days after finishing the book. Honestly, I did not get to experience any of that while reading it. Somehow, I felt that all the characters were so distant from each other - emotionally, and even literally…it was like reading different stories for different characters…Again, it might just be me, but, another book disappointingly overfilled with the “content”, which made me really flip through most of the pages to skip to the plot of the book (which was really weak). I feel that I’m yet to understand the author’s aim for writing this book. Classy classic. Spread across four decades, this is in all ways a great novel, a nonstop pleasure brimming with history, personal wisdom, and philosophy. Reading it was an absolute delight, all thanks to its protagonist, count Alexander Rostov. Rostov is a wealthy man sentenced by the new Communist regime to a life of exile within the Metropol hotel. He adjusts to life in confinement and does that with dignity, poise, elegance and wit. Technically it's historical fiction, thats the reason the reference game is so strong, but there’s fantastic romance, politics, espionage, parenthood, and poetry. The prose is woven with such intellegence that i loved reading every bit of it. The detailing, indirect pointers, and lack of realism in fiction pictures perfectly how the cruelties of the age can't begin to erase the glories of real human connection and the memories it leaves behind. The unexplained ending is the last awesome thing Amor Towles could do. And I believe endings should be like that. Unexplained. Unannounced. Unexpected. Hidden. While this book, originally written in Italian, is a collection of nine short stories set in Rome -the monumental, multifaceted capital city of Italy. Lahiri's writing style is what captivates me the most. The stories are slice-of-life, simple yet poignant and deep. 📖 Her beautiful description of the city will take you through Rome's nooks & corners, trattoria on a street, neighborhood pizzarias. Just for the Summer Review 🩷🤍🌸☀️🍉 4⭐️’s I really enjoyed this book! I actually haven’t read the first 2 books that are part of this series 🫣 so I wasn’t sure what to what to expect out of this book. I was pretty surprised after hearing how many people found this to be such an emotional read! I’m tend to cry quite a bit when reading emotional books, but for some reason this one didn’t get to me 😅 I did find the premise of this book to be so interesting: two people with dating curses deciding to date each other?? Literally so fun!🤪 I also appreciated how Abby Jimenez didn’t just write about romance, she created characters who had real traumas and well developed backgrounds that we got to deep dive into and work through. While I did really enjoy this book, it didn’t quite give me a 5 ⭐️ feeling. Tom Lake Written By: Ann Patchett ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My Review: Such a compelling read! This story gave me Where the Crawdads Sing and yet also Steel Magnolias vibes—and had me hooked from the very beginning. The characters are so relatable and the draw of the storytelling made me want to slow down and soak it all in. I loved the then/now shifts in the story and characters and how the author amplified family and togetherness throughout. This would be a phenomenal late spring/summer read if anyone is looking to add to their list!
