April 9 marks 5 years since DESCENDANT OF THE CRANE’s first publication, since debut, since this long held dream of mine came true. In the years of fighting for this dream, I told my parents a lie. “It gets easier”I’d say as I struggled while querying, and while on sub. I said it because I believed it. I had to. In trying to make a career out of this, I had to believe it would get easier because publishing that first book already felt so insurmountable. Anyway I say it’s a lie because it’s not entirely true. Some things have gotten harder, like the invisible struggle with craft and the changing relationship with reading and writing. Other hard things you’ve seen publicly, like the frankly traumatizing events surrounding DOTC and its republication. The lack of sequels, to this day, is still something that I must answer to when readers express their disappointment, because even though it was not in my control, I am the face of the book, authors are expected to be online, etc etc, and at this point, I also take ownership of the choice. Even if it wasn’t mine to start, it’s become mine to choose as I’ve moved on. However, other things have also gotten…maybe easier isn’t the right word, but more rewarding. With every book that I publish, I think I appreciate and understand just how much of a miracle and feat it is that a story that’s existed within me can clear all the hurdles to eventually reach you. On the whole, things are probably more or less just as hard as 5 years ago. The difference is that whereas before I wasn’t sure if I could handle that for multiple years, now I know I can. It’s still weird balancing sometimes, and sometimes it’s not about balance. Every year has been the dream coming true over and over again, and every year has been a true gift. So rather than hope for another 5 years, I just want to be grateful today for what already exists. 5 years, soon to be 4 books, and all of you. 🪷 Descendant of the Crane by Joan He 🌙 📚 8/40 "Tyrants cut out hearts. Rulers sacrifice their own." The story follows Hesina who is grappling with the kingdom of Yan who now look to her as their dianxia (Mandarin Pinyin for 'Your Majesty') whilst sitting on the suspicion that her father's death may not have been natural. I absolutely love the Chinese influences in this fantasy book. It reminds me of the Chinese historical dramas, and the rich descriptions of the palace's sections and the costumes take me right back into that world. Also really enjoyed how the characters' relationships are developed with one another. The book centres around Hesina's narrative, so you can see the distinct relationships she has with each of her siblings, and how these relationships inform the way she acts. The pacing is a little slow in the beginning, but it begins to find its footing as more pieces start falling into place, so it didn't stop me from reading. Definitely helps that the chapters are nice and digestible so it isn't so daunting! Rich storytelling, an engaging setting, and the perfect ending to this book. For a standalone novel, you can definitely get lost in the world and plot for a few hours, and I had to take a few minutes after reading it just to process everything. 4.25 ⭐

I figured I'll start this off by going through my favourite books first! So I've gotta get going with 'The ones were meant to find' by @joanhewrites 🌊 Prior to this I had read Joan's other work, descendant of the crane (also amazing), and was excited to get into this one! I had no idea how masterful she is. Her books take very different themes, while DOTC was a murder mystery of slow burn political intregues TOWMTF is a dual POV sci-fi exploring climate change, ethics, the bonds of love & the consequences of knowledge. It's a beautiful story and I'm glad I have this copy! This copy has a little pin mark in the front from shipping from my friend @theautumnbookreads which always makes me think of her. That little pin mark makes this book mine and mine alone! Furthermore it has an absolutely evil annotated chapter at the end by Joan herself of the most devastating plot twist! And the cover art is honestly something to admire all on its own, it really captures the vibes of the book & the hues of green and blue used for the ocean is just stunning! This book is really a solid standalone with an open ending that I'd reccomend you read if you're even moderately interested in : climate change, AI & sisterly love and I'd say it becomes more prevalent every year. So trust in yourself, and trust in your beliefs.” Book: Descendant of the Crane Author: Joan He This book was almost a DNF for me which would have been the first. I usually like to finish my books whether I enjoy or not at some point even if it is a drag; however, after getting like maybe 30% into it, it started to catch my attention more. Discovering the truth will lead to consequences that Hesina needs to bare. I loved that it showed her flaws and the conflicts within herself we got to see. The lengths she would go to unveil the truth whether she was ready to accept it or not. It had some twists that I didn't expect or I should've expected from countless Chinese dramas I have watched which didn't cross my mind at the time of reading. I love that we get morally grey characters in a sense. I understand where the character coming from, but it's not like I approve at the the same time? It is just very conflicting. It started off slow, but the pacing picked up a bit afterwards. It reads like a Chinese drama and ends like one where you feel like you want a second season or you are fine with an open ending in a sense. For me, I am fine with either one. I can kind of imagine what it turn out like if there was a second season to this book, but I am also okay with how it ended. Overall, it was a decent read. I love reading in this sort of time period. Do you buy books secondhand? I love secondhand bookstores. I used to work next door to one, and after every workday I would visit the store and just unwind there while browsing for books. To be honest, it was really dangerous because of the amount of books and comics I would find. This is my latest haul. I honestly couldn't believe I found Klara and the Sun secondhand in such a great condition, it is absolutely gorgeous. My go to bookstore in Belgium is @boekhandel_de_slegte. Although I do find them quite expensive for secondhand books. The Oxfam tweedehands bookstores are also fun bets, but I feel I'm less likely to find things for me. Descendant of the Crane ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I'd been wanting to read this book since I saw it released, but randomly ended up reading The Ones We're Meant to Find and Strike the Zither before getting to this one. He's books are all quite different, which shows her breadth of skill as an author. The start didn't capture me the way He's other two books did, but I did enjoy it and I got hooked around the halfway point. I was very interested to see where the story went and how everything got resolved. The plot keeps up a pretty good pace throughout and the reveals just kept coming! It was all crazy and I loved it! The world building was good. I liked the addition of being able to tell who has magic by their blood being flammable. The characters felt well written and developed. Because of the type of story (trying to find a murderer) I found it a bit harder to get invested in the characters, because any of them might be the culprit. Once I'd finished I felt like I needed to sit and consider the ending for a while. I'm still not entirely sure what I think about it all. I can definitely understand why so many people ask about a sequel (there isn't going to be one). There are quite a few things that feel unresolved, or rather than I would like to be explored further. The characters, their relationships and development, were not compelling for me. I was intrigued by the ending, but not so intrigued as to carry on with the sequel, to be honest! Let’s talk about reading slumps! 🫠 I haven’t finished a book— really read much at all—since the beginning of the month, but I’m hoping to sneak in at least one more book before December comes. The Righteous by Renée Ahdieh is my focus since she’s visiting my city for her tour next week. That’s my main motivator at this point because I’m desperate to get out of this slumpy abyss. Wide awake at 5am because of jet lag so thought I’d really quickly contribute to this trend, because I think it highlights so many of the realities of the writing journey. Some of these books I know I’ll never pub, but that’s only because I no longer think I can change them to fit with who I am as a creator now without ruining their fundamental vision. while it’s easy for me to laugh “oh that book sucked” in reality many of these books are time capsules of the writer I used to be, and while I’ve improved, that past-me also possessed certain strengths I’ve lost now and cannot recapture. Other books, the ones with double asterisks next to them, are ones that have been published against the odds. Every book is truly a miracle (as you can see by my ratio of fully drafted to pubbed) and while I’ve worked hard, I never discount the amount of luck and timing that went into each deal (and the labor of my entire team that follows, to and past pub date) Then lastly are the single asterisk books, the books that I believe in fiercely and know that by hook or by crook, I will try to get pubbed, or—since things aren’t always in your control—that I will advocate for as long as I have this career. STRIKE THE ZITHER used to be one those single asterisk books. We talk a lot about drawered books not being dead, but this is an example. It’s possible. Another thing I love that this shows is how seasons of productivity can change and look different. There are years where I despo-wrote 2 books. And there are years where it took me 4 just to write a 55k book. I’ve definitely slowed down overall, and I can say that my next YA (not listed here because it’s not yet drafted) is going to be one of those multi year books. As much as I wish I were faster, I also know I’m incredibly lucky to be able to take my time with things. Another one that just wasn’t for me sadly. I think this book had a similar problem to The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea where we got little to no background and jumped straight in with no context. The main character was supposed to ‘not want to be queen’ and ‘reject Queen responsibilities’ (unless I’m making that up 🤷‍♀️) but within the first couple of pages she decides to become queen. What’s your preferred reading format? Do you prefer hardbacks over paperback? Are you a Kindle reader through and through? Or biggest plot twist—do you solely audiobook? I’m a mix of all of these because if I don’t get a physical copy, the only way to read my ARCs is via my Kindle. Audiobooks help me particularly with longer books and rereads, and they keep me out of slumps. Technically, I do prefer paperbacks to hardcovers, but if I have to pick between either, I’ll usually grab the hardcover for longevity purposes.

Do you prefer audiobooks? I have been a diehard audiobook listener since I discovered how much easier they made my reading. As someone who is dyslexic and neurodivergent, physical books can be a struggle. I tend to speed read/skim cause of the dyslexia. And then it’s also really hard to slow myself down enough to sit and JUST read (I need to be multitasking all the time lol) I started the physical book of Descendant of the Crane last month and stalled in my physical book progress after a week or so. I was really loving it so I felt bad that it just sat untouched on my nightstand for weeeeeeks. But I finally caved and got the audiobook this week and I am flying through it again!! Just finished reading Descendant of the Crane by Joan He 🪽🏮 After the death of her father, princess Hesina enacts an investigation to figure out who killed him. Along the way, she confronts the uncomfortable past of her kingdom and how to be the ruler of a land that is not what is seems to be. This took me a while to get through because I was so busy (I was in Greece!!), but I ended up really enjoying it. There were a couple points that literally made my jaw drop, and I loved all the twists and turns. Joan He has such a lovely writing style, and I can’t wait to read her other books! I have a few books on my CR shelf that I’m hoping to finish by the end of the month 🤞 📖- Yellowface 25% - I am listening to the audiobook while reading the book so it’s taking me a little longer than I’d like but I’m absolutely loving this book it is batshit crazy 📲- Give Me a Sign 50%- this book is seriously so cute, watching her coming of age story is so heartwarming 📖Descendant of the Crane 45% - I binged most of this last week and haven’t gotten to pick it up since but I snagged the ebook from my library to help me finish it soon. Love Joan He and her writing so this is as amazing as I hoped. Nemmeno le relazioni tra loro sono sviluppate bene, così facendo risultare la storia d'amore forzata -per me. I read The Ones We're Meant to Find in 2021, so I shouldn't have been surprised... but somehow I'd forgotten how Joan He punches you with plot twists and kicks you with open endings. That is to say, of course, that I loved Descendant of the Crane too. . Following Princess Hesina as she investigates her father's death, He's debut is fantasy inspired by Chinese history and myth. Politically and emotionally complex, it holds nothing back in its exploration of how we perpetuate inequities--even when trying to fight them. .
