Random Fact of the Day: Back before the fax machine was invented, and when long-distance telephone calls were prohibitively expensive, a lot of business communication was handled via Telex. Sometimes colloquially referred to as a “teletype,” the operator typed out a message offline which was punched into a paper tape. Then the tape was inserted into a “reader” and the operator dialed the recipient’s Telex number—which, unlike today’s fax numbers, had only six digits—and then transmitted the message at a top speed of 66 words per minute. It was also possible to “talk” live in real time between two terminals; in fact, instead of an @ sign on the numeral “2” key, there was a BELL that rang on both ends with every tap that was used to call attention to the remote terminal in case there was no operator standing by. Typing on those keys was not quiet, they made a ringing-beeping noise, but it helped to read the words versus screaming on the phone. Before tty: "WHAT MOVIE DO YOU WANT TO SEE? the idea was so ridiculous i had to try it.. remember the glitch vst plugin? basically, processing audio with different effects where you can sequence which effect is applied on each beat. here is the much more expensive modular version of it (although i’m sure something similar can be done in vcvrack). the heart of this system is teletype controlling just friends (hello geode mode!), the envelopes from just friends open vcas through which the effect returns are routed. 6 envelopes, 6 vcas, 6 effects: milky way, character, data blender, echophon, erbe-verb and spring reverb, all housed in monome/mannequins isms case #teletype

Custom 4HP Eurorack Module: 4Ch. USB hub with switched data lines, whilst power remaining on. Enabling quick & easy toggling between active devices. I feel the hard work put in by friend of the museum, John Lucas, counts as a full body off restoration. This Teletype model 15, an early type of computer terminal built in 1948, came to us as a donation a while back and was in need of a lot of hard work and elbow grease to get it back to its current gleaming state.
