The expanded 30th Anniversary vinyl version of #thebrooklynside from #thebottlerockets was a high priority item for me this record store day. Unfortunately the local Long Island shops each only got one or two copies, and they were all gone by the time I did my shopping. Discogs to the rescue - my copy arrived the other day from #oilcapitalvinyl in Tulsa, OK. La storia dei Beatles abbraccia sette anni: dal 1962 al 1969, anno dello scoglimento del gruppo. Il nome Beatles non significa niente di preciso, ma l'assonanza con la parola inglese beetle, che significa "scarafaggio", fa si che in Italia i quattro musicisti vengano chiamati "scarafaggi". Il termine Beatles contiene peraltro la parola Beat che significa "pulsazione" e che individua l'elemento base della musica degli anni '60. La formazione storica del gruppo assestatasi dopo una serie di sostituzioni è la seguente: - John Lennon (voce, chitarra acustica); - George Harrison (chitarra. solista); - Paul Mc Cartney (voce, basso); - Ringo Starr (batteria). La città di origine dei Beatles è Liverpool: è qui infatti che John, Paul e George si conoscono. John è il vecchio, George è il più giovane. La scuola, il quartiere in cui abitano e la grande passione per la musica li avvicinano e li fanno diventare amici: suonano nelle ore libere dallo studio e iniziano ad esibirsi nei locali da ballo. Nelle prime apparizioni in pubblico accompagnano cantanti famosi, segliendo spesso batteristi diversi. Fanno poi alcune tournée in Germania, dove cominciano a diventare popolari. I Beatles adottano un look caratteristico e molto originale: la pettinatura a "caschetto" e un abbigliamento classico ma ricercato. Nell'ottobre del 1962 viene inciso il 45 giri "Love me do" che raggiunge il vertice delle classifiche. Il gruppo compone a ritmo vertiginoso e moltissime canzoni diventano successi internazionali: I love you, Please please me, Help, Ticket to riride, Day Tripper, Yesterday, Michelle, Girl e innumerevoli altre. Gli album Abbey Road e Let it be sono le ultime produzioni del gruppo che si scioglie nel 1969. I Queen si formano a Londra nel 1970 sulle ceneri degli Smile, rock band dove suonavano Brian May e Roger Taylor, a cui dopo l’addio del cantante Tim Staffell si unisce Freddie Mercury, già voce degli Ibex. È lui a scegliere il nome della nuova band: "È corto, semplice e facile da ricordare ed esprime poi quello che vogliamo essere, maestosi e regali". Il frontman dei neonati Queen è il cantante e pianista Freddie Mercury, vero nome Farrokh Bulsara, nato a Zanzibar da una famiglia parsi e successivamente emigrati in Inghilterra. Alla chitarra c’è Brian May, che aveva fondato gli Smile, mentre il batterista è Roger Taylor. La formazione storica dei Queen si completa nel 1971 con l'ingresso del bassista John Deacon. Nell'estate 1972 iniziano a lavorare al primo album Queen, che esce l’anno successivo. Dopo un buon risconto positivo per il singolo Killer Queen (inserito nel secondo album Queen II), il primo vero successo commerciale del gruppo arriva con il terzo abum Sheer Heart Attack.
