I know they’re meant to get older, and I remind myself how lucky I am to have this beautiful and wild 6 year old but this year I’m feeling it more than ever. A strange kind of grief that she’s so far past being my baby now, coupled with the knowledge that I’ll never go through this again. I miss all the little versions of her I’ve left behind at the same time as absolutely loving the person she’s becoming. People say they grow up too fast, they don’t stay little long, blink and you’ll miss it… but as usual, when you’re in the thick of it, you don’t realise how poignant those words are. I spent so long focusing on what the next stage was and wish I’d known not to… I won’t be the only parent feeling this way I’m sure, so if like me you’re getting your little ones things ready for school and having a little sob, you’re not alone 💗. Stay strong tomorrow pals.

Mini Sharkey transitional stage complete. Leo’s gone from a baby who cried nearly every lesson; to a toddler who would absolutely hate getting water on his face and would panic at the thought of going under water; to now a little boy who you can’t stop going underwater. All he wants to do is jump in and swim on his own. There’s no stopping him now. He’s now swimming on his own with his face in the water. What do you remember about your mum? I’m lucky mine is still here, although a very niche feeling of loss accompanies this. I think about her countless times every day, and as the weeks, months and years pass, I’m reminded of her everywhere I look. Her voice & the sound of her laugh etched into my memories, interwoven with little sound bites I can play on demand when needed. Like when she asked for lemolade (instead of lemonade), or calling me Shivvy (very few people call me this 💗) and laughing while telling me off for forgetting how to tie a sari. “What will you do when I’m not here?!” she’d ask and we laughed because that seemed impossible. She taught me all the things… I’m so grateful and lucky she is mine. I miss her all the time. You know when you know your mum is the only person who can make you feel better? Yeah. Me too. I’m 5.5 years into motherhood with my lovely girl, Anushka. The one I dreamed about for so many years. My everything. Thank you for making my life so much more fun (and louder than ever) and tiring me out every single day. It feels brave going to social things on your own doesn’t it? Last night I went to the first meet up of the new @the_book_taster Book & Pudding club at @aidanskitchenncl hosted by @dawn_kitson. I booked up straightaway and then had the usual nerves about going on my own but as it turned out, a good few others were in the same boat, and it seemed we all ended up sitting together ☺️. Book chat, drinks and cake. What a dreamy combination! I’d not been to Aidan’s Kitchen before but had heard great things. It is a gorgeous venue and had a lovely inviting and cosy atmosphere… and excellent cake. We voted for the book we wanted to read & went with Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson. Can’t wait for the next one 🥰.

It’s a long one. “You would be so pretty if you lost some weight”. If I had £1 for every time I’ve heard this growing up, well I’d have a canny lot of GBP. Fat, brown, with frizzy hair, glasses and a moustache. That was me growing up… not much has changed to be honest 😂. Thinking back to the miraculous day I was allowed to bleach my moustache, with the almighty Jolen (IYKYK) I remember looking in the bathroom mirror afterwards, marvelling at the the once black fine hairs which had turned a very light blonde colour. I secretly phoned my best friend to tell her. “You’ll never guess what I’ve been allowed to do!” I whisper-shrieked down the phone. “Pluck your eyebrows?” she replied, her voice full of hope. We then happily chatted about me and my lightened facial hair and how different my life would now be. I was allowed to pluck my eyebrows a year or so later… but with strict guidelines. My adolescence, was full of hair removal attempts - amongst other things obviously. I envied all the fair skinned, blonde haired girls at school who could get away with not even having to shave their legs… and there I was, age 16, in my bedroom at 9pm on a random Tuesday, furiously trying to wax my moustache but I actually ended up burning my skin because I over-waxed it. I ended up with a moustache shaped scab, which I tried to cover with makeup. Not ideal, that wasn’t a fun time…. Anyway, that’s not the point of this post. Today is international women’s day. Here’s to all the women in my life, the ones who raised me, have given me advice, listened to me, been a shoulder to cry on, celebrated my successes and supported me through failure… the ones who make me laugh so much, tears roll down my face and I feel like I can’t breathe. I 💗 you all. Oh… and here’s to our next generation, raising them to know they’re perfectly enough exactly as they are. May we know them, may we be them, may we raise them. 💖

If someone had told me a few years ago that we would be watching Evie dancing and singing in a show in front of a lot of people, I’d have never believed them. But last night and tonight myself and James had the privilege to watch just that. Our once extremely shy little girl (who wouldn’t so much as dance at parties) was in the front row of her class singing loud and proud and dancing her socks off. It’s safe to say Evie’s got the performance bug and didn’t want it to ever end. We’re so proud of her and the confident little girl she has grown into.
