Tiger Mountain Amber King County, Washington State Tukwila Fm. / Renton Fm. (Boundary) Middle to Late Eocene Weight: 1.76 grams Dimensions: 3.4 x 1.2 x 0.5 centimeters *This beautiful piece was given to me by @jacobs__rocks who mined it recently. Within this specimen are dozens of tiny natural fractures, each oriented in about the same position as the others; these reflect light and several result in rainbow patterns (thin-film interference), which sadly my camera cannot register. The resulting "schiller" is somewhat similar to the aventurescence seen in certain sunstones (e.g., Tanzanian oligoclase). Also shown are the birefringence colors of this material in cross-polarized illumination. The last two images are of the rough specimen, which weighed 2.18 grams, and measured 3.5 x 1.2 x 0.7 centimeters. It took me about 45 minutes to sand and polish this piece. #amber #tigermountainamber #tigermountain #issaquahalps #paleontology #lapidary #thinfilminterference #crossedpolars

Snowflake 950 You wonโ€™t find symmetry in this specimen, but that shouldnโ€™t diminish the beauty found it its uniqueness. This may or may not be a new โ€œtypeโ€ of snowflake (like Snowflake 943) as it breaks the standard rulebook for snowflake formation. Before you read on, consider checking out the latest coin design that I have created for the Royal Canadian Mint โ€“ a pure silver hexagonal snowflake โ€“ link in profile! If you look near the center of this crystal, just to the left, youโ€™ll spot a sharp triangular shape. These angles are odd โ€“ as youโ€™ll normally spot 60 or 90-degree angles on snowflakes. However, certain crystal twinning examples โ€“ such as arrowhead crystals โ€“ can create sharper angles. These twinned crystals usually have a common element, like a โ€œspineโ€ of sorts, running across their design, which we are missing here. There are some hints at this twinned-spine feature if you look to the middle-right of the crystal, looking vaguely like a parallelogram with a bright line cutting across it diagonally. This is not enough evidence to indicate with certainty why these particular crystals look like some form of hexagonal mahjong, but this is fourth snowflake of such design I have encountered, and they all feature similar traits. One of those traits that I didnโ€™t expect: every specimen that fits this mold has colours from thin film interference away from the center. It shouldnโ€™t take you long to notice the splashes of colour in the smaller details, all irregular in shape and form. These types of colour splashes are quite rare on โ€œnormalโ€ snowflakes, usually only occurring where two separate crystals have fused together. Odd that it has a 100% occurrence on this โ€œtypeโ€ of snowflake that I have been able to observe. #snow #snowflake #ice #sky #weather #meteorology #science #physics #fractal #winter #water #frozen #mineral #mineralogy #focusstacking #Canada #Lumix #LumixS1R #S1R #lumixstories #thinfilminterference #sublimation

The phenomenon can be termed as thin film interference. The rainbow-like structure you see when a drop of oil/petrol is on a wet road during rainy periods is due to a phenomenon called thin-film interference. Here's how it works: 1. Oil and Water: Oil and water do not mix because oil is less dense than water and is immiscible with it. When a drop of oil lands on a wet road, it creates a thin layer of oil floating on the water. 2. Thin-Film Interference: When light passes through the thin layer of oil, some of it is reflected at the top surface of the oil, and some of it penetrates the oil layer before being reflected at the oil-water interface. 3. Interference Patterns: As these two reflected light waves interact, they can either reinforce each other (constructive interference) or cancel each other out (destructive interference), depending on the thickness of the oil layer. 4. Color Perception: Different colors of light have different wavelengths. When constructive interference occurs for a particular color (wavelength), that color appears more vividly in the reflected light, creating the rainbow-like effect. The thickness of the oil layer determines which colors you see. So, the appearance of colors in the oil slick is due to the interference of light waves as they interact with the thin layer of oil, creating the rainbow-like patterns. The exact colors you observe will change as the oil layer's thickness varies, giving it a dynamic and colorful appearance. Blue Amber South Sumatra Basin Sumatra, Indonesia Gumai, Air Benakat, or Muara Enim Fm. 30-6.3 Ma Specimen (weight, dimensions) Polished: 11.7 g, 3.9 x 2.6 x 1.8 cm Rough: 13.6 g, 4.5 x 2.6 x 2.0 cm *Received from @manisteerocks. Thank you, Wil!๐Ÿ™‚ Inclusions: This piece contains numerous spherical and irregular inclusions of translucent resin droplets with a thin, white coating. Numerous dark-colored congealed forms are also present, as is typical for Sumatra amber. There is also a large, opaque inclusion that appears to be a section of fruticose lichen. This specimen was originally part of the specimen in the previous post, but I separated them along a natural fracture before polishing. Thin-Film Interference: A small fracture along one edge, visible in the close-up image, displays a "rainbow" which is caused by thin-film interference of light: the fracture here is air-filled with variable thickness, and light entering the piece reflects off both sides of the fracture; these separate reflected rays can either reinforce (i.e., constructive interference) or cancel each other (i.e., destructive interference); constructive interference results in a certain wavelength (color) exiting the piece. Resultant colors of light are dependant on the thickness of the fracture and the angle at which light enters it. #thinfilminterference #fluoresence #blueamber #glessite #sumatraamber #dipterocarpaceae #fossilresin

Soap bubble planet ๐Ÿซง The same trick of light that produces the swirling colors on a soap bubble--interference--is used to search for planets beyond our solar system. A bubble of soap is made of an extremely thin film of water and detergent. When light hits this film, some of it reflects off the surface, while some passes through and is instead reflected by the back of the film, only a micrometer thick. As different wavelengths of light reflected from the front and back interact like ripples on a pond, they produce dazzling swirls of colors on the surface of the bubble. In my research as an astronomy PhD student, I use a technique called interferometry, where light from multiple telescopes is combined and allowed to interfere like the light from the front and back of a bubble film. By studying the patterns of interference, I work to discover new planets and study the maps and rotation of stars. I tried to frame this photo to reflect the connection between my research and my photography. The result is these swirling colors on bubbles of soap which evoke the first glimpse of some turbulent planet. My photograph was selected as the cover of this monthโ€™s The Physics Teacher Journal! Thank you AAPT! In physics, we call soap bubble phenomenon Thin-Film Interference. Here is what I wrote in my photo essay: โ€œThis photograph is an example of thin-film interference. White light reflecting off soap bubbles displays a swirling pattern of colours. A soap bubble is an air-filled sphere surrounded by an extremely thin film made up of a sheet of water encompassed by two layers of soap molecules. Light behaves as a wave, much like ripples from a stone thrown into a pond, and different colours of light have different wavelengths. White light is a complete mixture of all the wavelengths of the visible spectrum at equal intensity. When white light shines onto the soap bubbles, the light reflected from the outer soap layer interferes with the light reflected from the inner soap layer. Depending on the thickness of the film and the angle of light, the reflected light waves can interfere destructively or constructively with each other, causing the iridescent colours on the soap bubblesโ€™ surfaces.โ€ #macrophotography #abstract #soapbubbles #bubble #color #photography #thinfilminterference

Snowflake 933 Splash! Some strange bubbles here, making this mysterious little snowflake quite beautiful. There are a few very interesting parts of this diminutive crystal to look at โ€“ letโ€™s dive in! Starting with colour, weโ€™ve got optical interference of two flavours. Near the top of the snowflake there is a small shard of ice from another crystal that has fused itself to the hexagonal plate. Occasionally when ice fuses together, there is a thin slice of air stuck in between. The interference colours are often smooth and transitioning because water molecules will sublimate and then re-attach to different parts of the closed space, which can create smooth thickness transitions. The yellow-pink coloured ring in the center of the snowflake is less flowing in colour, being recently capped over at specific thickness. If time were to pass, one might expect these colours to have softer transitions. Iโ€™ve seen that happen on larger snowflakes with optical interference features in their centers. The bubbles. Iโ€™ll try to explain this. Letโ€™s start by identifying the two bubbles that have not yet completely sealed over โ€“ take a look at the right side of the plate. These are still partially indentations in the ice surface. One could image all of the squiggly splash bubbles to have been of the same design before getting covered over. That doesnโ€™t explain how the indentations would have formed, however! This snowflake would have looked surprisingly similar to an earlier one in this series before the surface dents became covered. These are caused by outward growth occurring in cascading levels, filling in the thickness of the crystal. If the โ€œwallsโ€ of the dents get too steep, water vapour can no longer fill them in, and a ceiling forms at the near-90-degree angle at the top of them, a point where water molecules can attach more readily. #snow #snowflake #ice #sky #water #frozen #fractal #hexagon #geometry #macro #macrophotography #microscopy #weather #meteorology #hydrology #mineral #mineralogy #focusstacking #opticalinterference #thinfilminterference #natural #crystal #winter #Canada

It's snowing pretty good today and it was the perfect conditions to catch some #thinfilminterference that was actively flowing. The same jaw dropping colors that are on my titanium yoyo that @sum.fl0w3r anodized. These unique colors come from constructive and destructive interference of light waves being reflected off the multiple surfaces. Some light penetrates to the ground and reflects back, while other light only hits the top surface of the liquid or only goes part way in before it reflects. This causes the different pathways of light to have different phases when they come out into the air and recombine right before your very eyes. The phase differences cause some colors to be cancelled out while others are reinforced and stand out more. Thickness changes in the puddle is where we are seeing the largest variations in color, where the bronze areas are shallow, purple is a little deeper, dark blue is even deeper, and the shiny bright ice blue is deepest! Physics is beautiful! #physics #optics #constructiveinterference #destructiveinterference #waves #particle #partave #wavicle #photon #sciencerules

Just really waiting to see how much it breaks up, if rainbows disappear, if there really is irridescense from metals as well as the precious hyalite layers. Opal is a fickle mistress. Papillon and the amazing technicolour dream wings ๐Ÿฆ‹๐ŸŒˆ Zoom into ๐Ÿ” the iridescence effect from the mother of pearl slices, the structural colour optical effect works similar to the shimmery wings of butterflies in real life! The multiple thin layers of aragonite platelet in nacre, diffuse and also selectively reflect white light, creating delightful iridescent interference colours. #motherofpearljewelry #vancleefarpels #photoniccrystal #iridescence #nacre #thinfilminterference #diffraction #gemmology #undertheloupe #dawsonsjewellery

thin-film inโ€ขterโ€ขferโ€ขence /หˆthin 'film หŒin-tษ™r-หˆfir-ษ™n(t)s/ . . . The phenomenon of thin-film interference occursย when a light wave is reflected off two surfaces at a distance equal to its wavelength. We witness varied colored patterns as light waves reflecting off the top and bottom surfaces interfere with one another. Thin-film interference explains the multiple colors seen in light reflected fromย soap bubblesย andย oil filmsย onย water. It is also the mechanism behind the action ofย antireflection coatingsย used onย glassesย andย camera lenses. . . . ๐Ÿ”: #thinfilminterference #opticalillusion #rainbow #oilslick #rainbow #colorful #science #optical ๐ŸŒŽ: #gravesend #brooklyn #newyorkcity #nyc #newyork #ny #unitedstatesofamerica

Several of my fluid simulations are running on top of Salesforce Tower every night from midnight-1am for the month of August. If you are in the Bay Area, look up! Big thanks to @jimcampbellstudio for the opportunity to show this work and for all the help testing these animations on the tower! #generativeart #computationaldesign #webgl #glsl #shader #simulation #fluidart #clouds #suminagashi #thinfilminterference #marbling

Long time no posts - sorry. Been making a lot of Red Burl for @wrcase . So hard to pattern this without getting holes, but the best color/pattern comes milliseconds before ruination. My patterning methods are highly proprietary, thus why you never see vids of me doing it, but I call it "controlled destroyance". Used to be so difficult that I locked the shop doors and shut off my phone just to pattern it. Now its fairly enjoyable, but still requires intense focus. #dichrolam #redburl #dichroic #dichro #giantbirefringentoptics #thinfilminterference #thinfilmphysics #opalinsheetform #australianopal

Name this phenomena? Thin Film Interference What it shows: Waves reflecting from two surfaces can interfere constructively and destructively. In this case it is light waves that are being reflected from the front and rear surfaces of thin soap or oil films. The interference produces a pattern of beautiful colors in white light, or dark and light bands in monochromatic light. How it works: Our two most visually dramatic illustrations of thin film interference use either a soap film suspended in air from a 19 cm diameter circular frame, or a very thin layer of oil floating on top of water. Oil Film For the oil film experiment, a drop of turpentine is squeezed out of an eyedropper onto the surface of water. The drop quickly spreads out into a thin film displaying rings of color which then quickly evolve into moving random patterns of brilliant colors. It's a beautiful animated version of the colorful oil slicks one sometimes sees in the street. We have measured the index of refraction of turpentine to be 1.52; thus, like the soap film experiment, light suffers a hard and soft reflection from the top and bottom surfaces, respectively. Thin-film interference is most constructive or most destructive when the path length difference for the two rays is an integral or half-integral wavelength. That is, for rays incident perpendicularly,ย 2 t = ฮป n , 2 ฮป n , 3 ฮป nย ,โ€ฆ or 2 t = ฮป n / 2 , 3 ฮป n / 2 , 5 ฮป n / 2 ,โ€ฆ And, I've found this ' Thin Oil Film Interference ' on the surface of road at the grocery market. ๐Ÿ”Ž๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ“šโœ #thinfilminterference #interference #waves #optics #physics #physicslovers #neet2022 #research #explore #study #scientist #science #futuredoctor #chemistry #light #experiment #theory #lab #practical #student #read #write #learn #revision #biotechnology #medicine #doctor #clinica #doctors #surgeon

๐ŸŒˆRainbow Paper Danica and I had fun with this one- we loved seeing the different rainbow patterns! Put some water in a container. Let one or two drops of clear nail polish fall onto the surface of the water. The nail polish will spread out and form a thin film on the surface of the water. Place a piece of black paper on top of the nail polish and push the paper under the water. Take the paper out of the water and let it dry. ๐ŸงชThe rainbow effect is caused by something called "thin film interference". White light from the sun contains all the colors of the rainbow and will reflect off the surface of the film or will travel through the film and reflect from there. The light waves reflecting from the bottom interfere with the light waves reflecting directly off the surface of the film. The resulting wavelengths are of many different sizes which result in different colours being reflected. You might have seen this rainbow effect before in bubbles, puddles or oil spills. โš ๏ธWork in a well ventilated area to avoid nail polish fumes. #scienceexperimentsforkids #scienceexperiment #experiment #scienceisawesome #scienceathome #science #sciencewithkids #learning #learningathome #stem #steam #physics #thinfilm #thinfilminterference #lightwaves #rainbow #rainbowscience #wavelength
