I love seeing how much this view has changed in only five weeks since I was here last. 8) American Crow - this one spends too much time at trailhead parking lots and learned to talk 😳 9-10) Rufous Hummingbird - and just as I was about to get back in my car, I spotted this beauty! My favorite of all bird species. So tiny, so colorful, so fast, so ferocious. They migrate back up north every March but this is the first one I’ve seen this year! 🧡❤️

🪨🥾 Tradition Plateau, Issaquah - bumpy terrain, short to medium hikes (choose your own adventure!) It’s not often that you can find a nice hiking trail in the “mountains” without the pain of elevation, but the plateau is just that. Immediately from the Tiger Mountain Trailhead starts a relatively ‘flat’ network of trails that takes you all along the plateau. The shortest loop even takes you to this random old school bus in the middle of the forest! 😅 If you’re feeling up for it, you can extend your hike toward the west to see the small lakes along the wetlands trail (just double check what elevation changes to expect). *This parking lot requires a Discover Pass and fills up fast!! Tiger Mountain Amber King County, Washington State Tukwila Fm. / Renton Fm. (Boundary) Middle to Late Eocene Weight: 1.76 grams Dimensions: 3.4 x 1.2 x 0.5 centimeters *This beautiful piece was given to me by @jacobs__rocks who mined it recently. Within this specimen are dozens of tiny natural fractures, each oriented in about the same position as the others; these reflect light and several result in rainbow patterns (thin-film interference), which sadly my camera cannot register. The resulting "schiller" is somewhat similar to the aventurescence seen in certain sunstones (e.g., Tanzanian oligoclase). Also shown are the birefringence colors of this material in cross-polarized illumination. The last two images are of the rough specimen, which weighed 2.18 grams, and measured 3.5 x 1.2 x 0.7 centimeters. Best (and worst) of Squak . . The annual fun run gathering of runners at Squak Mountain in December for a half marathon trail run that covers the best of Squak Mountain. This year Christopher added a Worst of option that involved finding all the cabins, cars and other oddities that dot the mountain in off-the-beaten path locations. The Issaquah Alps . . When we moved the Seattle - we wanted to live outside the city and I wanted to leave near trails. I picked an area on Google Maps that had "green" and lots of it. We moved on to Cougar Mountain and after we returned from Beijing we moved on to Squak Mountain. In the past 20 years I've run tens of 1000s miles on these trails. Issy Alps 100 Mile - DNF . . I was SO TIRED but I knew I couldn’t sleep - the rain was still falling and the wind was still blowing - I was soaked inside from sweat and my jacket was keeping most rain off but the wet and cold was seeping through. And I was cold and if I stopped I’d get colder - BUT I was SO TIRED. I finally stopped by a large tree trunk that sheltered me in one direction from most of the wind and rain. I sat down at its base and leaned my back against the tree. I turned off my headlamp and the darkness closed in on me while I hugged my knees and closed my eyes. Was I unconscious for 5 seconds or 5 minutes? My knees jerked open as the weight and gravity of my legs fell and my head jerked forward. Whatever I had gotten in rest was not going to continue, it was futile. I got up. Turned on my headlamp and kept going down the trail. . .
