A juvenile timber rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) basking in-situ. Hiked up this young snake with @solluna_of_wonderland in the mountains recently. It seemed that it pulled through its very first winter quite well without any visible blisters or signs of SFD (at least on the exposed part of body). Unlike all the other photos I posted here I took some liberties of editing this one, as all the pics I got were pretty overexposed. Wouldn’t say I’m very satisfied with the results but it is what it is. Growing up in the wild places of the southeast, I’ve had many interactions with water moccasins, a few copperheads, and even fewer eastern diamondbacks. But today was the first day I’ve ever walked up on a timber rattlesnake (crotalus horridus). Even attempting to constantly scan for snakes, I was unfortunately close before I was aware of him. He was calm and let me back off without a rattle. Perched on a small dry spot in the middle of a swampy area, warming himself in a patch of sunlight, his camouflage serving him well. Timber rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) This was a find of a lifetime, shoutout to my little brother and mom who spotted it and ran home to knock on the bathroom door to come get me. The whole goal of managing this farm for wildlife is to see healthy native wildlife use the area as if their activity was uninterrupted. The canebrake snake has been my goal for a while, I knew they were here, I didn’t know they only cross trails when I’m not on them. I’ll be posting more footage and info about this snake as it was an amazing encounter with a really docile, photogenic timber who I believe was on the lookout for her future nesting den. To welcome fall and the Ssspooky Season, let's look at some of the many snakes found in the Southeast, photographed by our Domain 08 (Alabama) field ecologists. 🐍 Speckled Kingsnake (1/8): these beautiful snakes are non-venomous and make great pets. They are known for eating highly venomous snakes like cottonmouths, copperheads, and rattlesnakes as they are immune to their venom! Grey Rat Snake (2/8): great for pest control and non-venomous. This one actually lives under our tower at our Dead Lake site (DELA), and we've named him Linguini! Cottonmouth/Water Moccasin (3/8): commonly found near bodies of water. Their markings fade with time and they turn brown or black, which causes people to confuse them with harmless watersnakes. Although docile, if threatened they show the cotton-white inside of their mouths. They are amazing swimmers, going underwater and sometimes striking while in water. Copperhead (4-5/8): masters of camouflage and nearly invisible in leaf litter. They live in low-land areas near rivers, streams and swamps. Although they are known to be good swimmers, they rarely go underwater. Ribbon snake 6/8): these little cuties are non-venomous and, although curious, are very shy, so it's rare to find them. They are often confused for garter snakes, and females carry the eggs inside them, eventually giving birth to live young. Timber Rattlesnake (7-8): they will usually rattle to alert you of its presence. Although their bite is highly venomous and strong enough to kill a human, they do not pursue or attack a person unless they are threatened. Ever since I was a young kid growing up in Minnesota the Timber Rattlesnake was a mythical snake everyone talked about but was known as a rare sight to come across...I had tried looking a handful of times without much effort or research behind it. Once I moved to Arizona 4 years ago rattlesnakes quite literally took over my life and the thought of finding one in my homestate of Minnesota became one of my biggest targets. Years ago Minnesota once had a bounty on these and over 6000 were turned in during that time. This quite literally destroyed the population leaving what once were large dens gone. Now Minnesota has listed them as protected and they are making a huge comeback even though most landowners still kill any that they see.. These snake rely on the bluff prairies above the river bottoms for their dens and birthing sites but now invasive plant's are taking over forcing these snakes to find basking areas below their bluff prairie kingdom's, putting them right in people's yards. The Minnesota Department of natural resources has been doing alot of work trying to reestablish these prairies by doing controlled burns in hopes to bring back these important sites. Finding one of these and being surrounded by bluffs and cornfields I use to hunt and explore as a kid was a surreal experience I won't ever forget... • Yesterday I spent the afternoon wandering through the forest and creeks. I have always talked with Mother Nature before and during my time in her home but I’m working on being more intentional. Before I begin I stood at the edge of her home and gave thanks. Sent out gratitude and asked permission to enter. I ended with, ‘I surrender to you today, Mother Nature and ask that you connect with me in anyway you can. I was blessed with a trail, 2 waterfalls and the whole area to myself. After spending some time in the waterfalls and exploring the area I turned to head back to the car. About 10 minutes down the trail, I was startled when as my foot was about to touch down l saw something black out of the corner of my eye about a foot away from my leg. I was startled and jumped back but was not scared. Then I saw this guy. A beautiful Timber Rattlesnake. He was just chilling head held up partway across the trail. I paused and watched him for a while. I just knew he was there not to harm me but to bring me a message. He never got aggressive nor became defensive. He was very calm and I was calm. After 5 or so minutes when it was time to say goodbye I used my hiking pole to encourage him to move off the trail. Even as I gently placed my hiking pole under the front part of his body to get him to start moving he never got defensive. He just kind of looked at me, then slowly turned and made his way off the trail and into the undergrowth. Moving ever so slowly. He never rattled his rattle. After being fully off the trail, he made his way around this tree stump and then paused and looked at me. I said goodbye, thanked him for his energy and for his message and walked away. I was in a different energy and emotional space after we parted. I’m not able to put what I was feeling into words, just knowing that something in me changed. Crotalus horridus, White County TN TIMBER-RATTLESNAKE, the most dangerous and largest of the four venomous snakes occurring in TN. This dude packs a bite like no other in TN, packed full of hemotoxins and neutrotoxins. As venomous as this guy is, he isn’t an aggressive species. Being 4 or 5 ft from this snake, it never rattled or acted like it was going to strike me. These snakes face many threats in the wild: habitat destruction, persecution, road mortality, and fungal diseases. Waking up to my dog alerting to a small Timber Rattlesnake in front of my door was exciting. I trapped and relocated it. A few things I learned: •My dog is snake wise. •My cat is an idiot. •The community is divided on how important a snake life is. •I still don't need anyone to save me, I can face my own fears.
