Surprise! Two days ago, I got a message about another kitten found at the same location that Scarecrow was found stuck in the barbedwire, and Oodelally was found in the tall grass. This tiny man was tangled up in vines and long grass so tightly he needed to be cut out. His back leg was wrapped up in the mess, and he is limping on that leg. Good vibes needed! @feliciasfelinefosters and I had been working with some people to TNR free roaming cats on their property, but unfortunately one of the mamas had already give birth to 8 babies! The caretakers said that, sadly, 6 passed pretty quickly and then another one passed as well several days later leaving this little guy as the only survivor. We decided it was best to scoop him and the mom up and bring them into foster to give him the best chance at survival and ensure she was inside and not going to get pregnant again. When he got to my house he was only 88 grams-tiny even by neonate kitten standards! Unfortunately mom is not very interested in caring for him so I’m helping her out supplementing him with bottle feeding round the clock, but so far so good! Let's talk about the rescue of our newest arrival. This single kitten was found alone on the porch of a home in Yonkers yesterday. According to the homeowner, she took the baby inside and placed the kitten on a heating pad before attempting to feed. So far, so good. Then, assuming that the mom cat would return for her kitten, the newborn was put back outside - alone and without a heat source. What? Here's a little context for our friends who do not live locally. The weather was crappy yesterday! The temperature barely made it out of the 40s with intermittent rain and high winds. I had to run an errand and was wearing my winter coat. What would make anyone think that a 1-2 day old newborn could withstand these conditions? When mom failed to return for her kitten by early afternoon today, the homeowner brought her to Yonkers Animal Shelter to surrender her. When the manager of the shelter called to ask if we could take the baby, she immediately remarked on how cold the kitten was. The shelter staff placed her on a heat source while waiting for a volunteer to drive the kitten to us. Upon arrival here, the first comment from the transporter was about how cold the kitten was. We immediately placed the tiny girl in an incubator. It has now been more than an hour, and she is just starting to feel warmer. Still not warm enough to safely offer her a bottle though. Hypothermia (low body temperature) can easily lead to death, especially in newborn kittens who are unable to regulate their body temperature until about three weeks of age. Body systems and functions slow down and eventually cease if the hypothermia continues. No matter how cold or lethargic an animal is when found, you can not crank up the heat source to quickly warm them up. This sudden change in temperature shocks the body and can result in cardiac arrest. Warming an animal MUST be done slowly and gradually. I increase the incubator temperature in small increments over time. And please remember that animals should never be directly against any heat source (Hot Hands, microwaveable disks, heating pads, etc) as this can result in burns or overheating/hyperthermia. They get around super well despite their wonky hind leggies💪 They 5 weeks old and are eating great and using the litter box👏 But their leggies tend to get in the way, so they need frequent birth baths after using the box🤪 The orthopedic specialist called and said they had an opening for TOMORROW!!! Meet Ghost. 👻 The street cat, who wandered in recently, used to be taken care of by an old neighbour who just passed away this year. He is a bit rough around the edges but a very gentle soul, easy to pet with a small meow for food. Since we've met him, he just likes to nap around our yard, sometimes with eyes wide open...to the point of hardly looking alive (hence his name). Sadly, we noticed during one of his scary naps this week that he had a massive wound on the inside of his leg/thigh. 😱 All the skin was missing, and I will spare the nasty details. 🤢 Vet said it looked like an abcess or few burst, either from infection or perhaps cancerous tumours. They told us that he most definitely would have died soon had we not brought him in when we did. They said they needed to give him 72 hour treatment with medication, debride and clean up the wound and have a better look. They figured that his leg would need amputation due to the extent of the injury. 😭🥺 Poor baby must have been in a world of pain!! So far it's been good news, he is responding mostly well to the medicine, except diarrhoea, they believe it may not be cancer (no tests done though) and his leg should survive! He's still at the vet after 5 nights for his treatment, so it's been a long road for him...🤕🤒... but it seems he will be coming out on the other side. Daisy May is still hanging on. She doesn’t look great, which I expected honestly. But I wish she would start looking better😔💔. She’s one of those kittens where I hold my breath every time I go to her incubator…afraid to look in and check on her. I breathe the biggest sigh of relief when I see her chest rise and know she’s alive. She’s peeing decent, it’s still pretty concentrated which I don’t like. No poop yet. She’s getting fluids, her antibiotics, and got the tiniest steroid dose. Taking her tube feeds of 3mls well. She’s actually gained 10g already! So I’m happy with that progress. I just really hope she perks up a little soon. Please continue to send tons of prays for Daisy May❤️
