Another one of these forgotten records you never hear or read about (at least me). Maybe because it is a soundtrack with a weird name to a movie that wasn’t very successful back in the late 70s? But it is pretty much Hubert Laws in a bigger group setting doing his funky jazz thing he does so well. Now playing in stereo, 1966 (OG Monarch pressing). : Man, these Solid State releases sound so so good if you can get a clean one like this one (courtesy of @therecordexchange )! One of the glaring omissions in my collection is my lack of any Thad Jones as lone leader. I’ve only got him as co-leader, and mostly with Mel Lewis. These sessions are great though because their goal was to put yesterday with today. So, all the solos are just pure hard bop goodness with interludes by big band crispness. There’s one Bossa Nova number and maybe one ballad type, but it’s mostly really quality stuff. And you get your moneys worth - there is hardly any dead wax left on the record! At the infancy of jazz, jazz is the music of celebration. In New Orleans, big bands played jazz in festival marches during Mardi Gras. On the Mississippi River, Dixieland jazz players on steamboats entertained fun-seeking listeners. In Kansas City, jazz played all night in raving parties. This all ceased when Dixieland jazz became obsolete. In the world of bebop and hard bop jazz, we often hear yearning for unfulfilled dreams, moaning about bad luck and venting off after a particularly frustrating day. It feels like jazz has evolved into serious business. Lee Morgan showed that hard bop jazz can be lighthearted, too. Lee jumps off this LP with a joyful calypso swing in “Ca-Lee-So”. Joe Henderson follows Lee’s solo with a delightful glee, while McCoy Tyner follows with a happy statement. Lee, Joe and McCoy celebrated the birth of “Zambia” with dancing solos and playful interplays between Lee and McCoy, and then McCoy and Billy Higgins. How can you not visit the post-bop world on a “Nite Flite” with McCoy and Joe? McCoy lays down his famous chord rhythms while Lee and Joe take flight with imaginative solos. Joe shows off his chops by deploying a series of bent, jabbing notes. McCoy gradually slows down as his solo progresses to make you feel you are floating in air. The LP closes out with the classy “The Delightful Deggie”. Between the 4 quintet tunes, Lee also plays 2 tunes with a 10-piece big band orchestrated by Oliver Nelson. While he mostly sticks with the melody, Oliver arranges sophisticated harmonics behind him with the French Horn, the baritone sax, the bass clarinet and the trombone. “Yesterday”, a Beatles staple, features a great extrapolation from Wayne Shorter. McCoy’s pretty solo is particularly outstanding. I found an OG of this LP in the bargaining bin because there is a piece of paper stuck on the leading groove on side A. The rest of the LP is near mint. After a few pops, I’m treated with a bliss of noiseless RVG mastering and joyful jazz tunes. If you want a jazz LP that is tasty and uplifting, I highly recommend this LP.

Hubert Laws "Flute By-Laws" (Atlantic, 1966). Hubert Laws 2nd LP as band leader, with a heavy hitting bunch of musicians—early Chick Corea, the legendary Latin jazz bassist Cachao, etc. Lots of Latin beats here, especially on "Baila Cinderella" and "Let Her Go" (both feature Cachao on bass). The opening track, "Bloodshot," has a classic soul-jazz thing to it, like Roland Kirk's less experimental jazz. Now playing in mono, 1961 (OG). : I asked my 500th follower @maurice_bendrix (so glad he wasn’t a bitcoin expert/life coach spam follower 🤣), to put in a few artist requests to celebrate the occasion. One of his choices was the Jazztet, which happens to be one of my favorite combos ever since I stumbled across their debut album in a thrift store for $1! This was their first album recorded in a “live” setting in the famous Chicago jazz club - The Birdhouse. As to be expected, Golson’s arrangements are on point and his sax work is on fire. Farmer’s soft , smooth and melodic trumpeting flows throughout and this album is also his recorded debut on the fluegelhorn as well. The only downside to this recording is that they didn’t mic Cedar Walton on the piano well enough, so unless he’s on a rare solo, it’s pretty difficult to hear him. I would have thought Side B would be my favorite with their rendition of Monk’s “Round Midnight,” but Side A is actually my favorite boasting two burners. “Junction” written and arranged by Golson and “Farmer’s Market” written by Farmer & arranged by Golson. Well-tempered end-60s soul jazz on Verve: the fourth album by George Benson swings and grooves from all corners, bristles with intelligent horn arrangements and, above all, leaves plenty of room for the centerpiece on the guitar. With the High Society of Jazz like Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock or Billy Cobham as backing, the whole album is a real statement: Here a star is being built up who is intended for higher realms. The fact that in the selection of tracks such as ‚Sunny‘ or ‚Walk on by‘ the zeitgeist was taken into account, does not hurt the recording - on the contrary: Mr. Benson can extract even the most trivial melodies at the same time fire and coolness. The high-spirited improvising, the deep strong sound of his guitar and his lithe, irresistible beat does not immediately suggest that Mr. Benson was the leader of the most successful rock band in his native Pittsburgh in his youth. But that's probably where the compatibility of his highly sensitive, unique jazz guitar playing with current, successful musical trends comes from, without being under-complex. BLP 4243. Lee Morgan “Delightfulee”. This session consists on two bands, a quintet and ten piece big band. The only constants are McCoy Tyner, Bob Cranshaw, and of course Lee. The first tune “Ca-Lee-So” begins a little bit hokey but still with a great flow. The beat is positive and lively and so is the mood of the soloists, taking a slightly cheesy refrain and shaping this into a really good tune. “Zambia” features Billy Higgins with tight control of the cymbals and a killer rhythm. Joe Henderson is spectacular. His god gifted tone on full display, mildly eclectic at times, and not one note short of a joy to hear. Lee plays fast and clean, and Tyner shows a fine stride. Their cover of The Beatles “Yesterday” is the only song to date by Lee Morgan that I don’t especially like, and it’s still alright. The refrain has Lee replacing the lyrics, rather corny. Big brass backs him in a whimsical fashion, surely appreciated by certain audiences but none present with me today. The solos are quite good and Philly Joe Jones keeps a nice rhythm, as he always does. Side 2 is pretty much lights out top to bottom. “Sunrise Sunset” has Lee playing a cool refrain, backed by a ton of brass. The result is divine, the mood is groovy with a hint of seriousness. Wayne Shorter is outstanding and the occasional brass accents add robust flavor. Tyner has an excellent solo, especially how he exits. “Nite Flite” is groovy as hell, the rhythm section is tight and flawless. This song is sampled by the one and only Biz Markie on his album “Diggin’ On Blue”, a great DJ mix almost entirely consisting of Blue Note tracks. This song has my head swinging the whole way through. Lee is simply amazing. When inspired, Joe Henderson’s flow is something to marvel. Amazing track. “The Delightful Deggie” is perhaps the most emotional song of the session, and makes an excellent conclusion to the album. Despite its minor shortcomings, Delightfulee is still a top tier album. Side 2 especially makes this one worth owning. The big band is mostly tasteful, and essentially every solo is superb. Great album from this all star cast, highly recommended.
