What is CONTEMPORARY? This is the choreography from last weeks class! Contemporary is an expressive dance style that is all about GETTING IN YOUR FEELS and is a bit of a fusion of several other dance genres (modern, jazz, lyrical, ballet) Every Tuesday evening 7pm at the studio with @thejonathanvoisine Dancing through your feelings is an excellent way to process emotions that we all have a lot of these days. So come get in your feels with us in a safe space. Jonathan also teaches a fusion class on Sundays at 11am online for all of you VIRTUAL fans. It’s Contemporary Ballet and includes a traditional ballet barre warmup followed by contemporary choreography similar to this video. 💗💗💗

Along with currently embarking on her pilates teaching certification, Krystal completed her registered yoga teacher training at Rishikish Yog Peeth in India in 2013 and has since been cultivating a practice that combines dance, yoga, meditation, vocal, sound and chakra therapy with the intention of creating a space for healing, self-love, self-acceptance and empowerment. She is the founder of www.houseofkiran.com and is committed to bringing her practices to marginalized communities, particularly to organizations who serve women and children. Fun fact: Krystal was one of Cornerstone Studio's original teachers when the studio opened and brought South Asian dance forms to the studio and Gerrard East community! Happy Retirement Jennifer! For the past 22 years, Jennifer Watkins has been the administrative backbone of the Esmeralda Enrique Spanish Dance Company. An experienced programmer, producer, and consultant, Jennifer has facilitated the creative work of the company by securing operating funds from all three levels of government, increasing the company’s presence by developing programming and workshops, developing budgets, and managing the intricacies of the day-to-day operations at EESDC. Jennifer started her career as a professional dancer. She performed with independent dance companies, presented her own choreography, and worked in theatre, film, and television as a member of ACTRA. Before joining EESDC and for the last 34 years, Jennifer has been active in Toronto’s dance community in various administrative and management roles. Notably, with Danny Grossman Dance Company, Dance Umbrella of Ontario, fFIDA, CADA, Moving Pictures Festival and with numerous independent dance artists. Jennifer has served as a Grants Officer at the Toronto Arts Council and has been a long-time member of the Board of Directors at Dance Ontario, currently serving as Vice-Chair. Castanets,pallilos, castañuelas....whayever you know them as, we all recognize the sound of this instrument synonymous with Spanish Dance. In Spain, castanets can accompany folkloric or classical dances and have been adapted for the needs of dancers as they execute the particular rhythms that Classical Spanish dance, folkloric or flamenco dance and ask for. However, fun fact: the first use of the castanets is attributed to the Phoenicians who made the castanet-sounding instruments of common wood sticks, more than 3,000 years ago! They were used for religious ceremonies associated with festive rites. Today in class and in performance, we use castanets to perform a simple rhythm on the left-hand, while the right-hand plays a higher pitch and more complicated rhythm.
