My littlest enjoys practicing her colors and “Rainbow Reef” by Tracey English has been a fun way to do so before bedtime each night. 🌈 We explore magical animals of the ocean with various colors – red, yellow, pink, green, purple, orange, blue, black, gray, and white. Animals include yellow fish darting, orange starfish surfing, purple lobsters peeping, gray dolphins playing and more. The board book has tabs at the top of each page which make it easy for little hands to flip through. I often try to second guess which are my favourite colours, greens and blues are definitely amongst some of my favourites , the great thing about the weekly challenge hosted by @estemacleod is that you get to experiment and try out so many different combinations. These colours were inspired by artist Wilhelmina Barns Graham.
Earlier this summer I was invited by @independentartsiow to run a small workshop throughout August for young people aged 8-13 and their grown ups. I was pretty much given free reign to select what this project would entail, which lead me to discover the wonderful collage artist @traceyenglish. I was greatly inspired by Tracey’s work, especially since her collages are made from paper she has painted and printed herself. Her work is very warm and colourful and the designs are so personal which makes each one unique. This made for a very exciting summer holiday, as we gave participants the opportunity to create their own collages, based on Tracey English’s work, with their own photos and imaginations as their reference. For the 5 weeks this session was running, we saw a wide array of meaningful photos, art styles, techniques and end results. Everybody got completely stuck in and worked so hard to create the loveliest pieces of art. This has been such a wonderful experience for me as someone who is very keen to share friendly, supportive and relaxed creative space with others. The first slide of this post is the collage I made to get to grips with what I was asking attendees to do in their time slot. The second slide is the photo I used as my personal reference. The third is my individual sheets from some of the painting/ printing/ preparation process. Fourth, fifth and sixth slides are all a collection of the work done by the young people and their grown ups. Seventh slide to finish off is our table of very vibrant supplies! This was available every week at all times for anyone who needed them. I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers. Making Memories is a great book to introduce children to mindfulness and the different ways they can practice it. The book gives a brief introduction then goes on to focus on different things they can do or practice to help them make positive memories, practice mindfulness and express themselves. The book gives short introductions to things such as journaling, scrapbooking, meditation, keeping spaces happy and tidy, gratitude and much more more. Each page is bright and colourful and engaging. Children need more these days to help them with their mental health and practicing mindfulness is a great tool to have. I definitely recommend this book for children aged 9+. . . QOTD.
