This Trail Development Thursday features new trail signage! Over the past year, Friends has worked closely with our designers to better improve our users' experience on our trails. Our new updated water trail signage standards will improve wayfinding and visibility and increase safety information important to all users. I hope to photograph all of the signs from this project, but it may take me a while. 😊 This one is located in the gorgeous meadow at the Schumann Preserve at Pilot Knob. During this visit, I made friends with a couple of tourists in the gazebo: one from New Jersey who summers here and hikes the preserve “more days than not” and the second was a first-time visitor from Montreal. We talked about song birds in the meadow, which happens to be the topic of one if the signs I worked on. You may have noticed these kiosks in Juab, Utah and Tooele County. These structures consist of OHV Laws, a map of the area as well as some of the area's history. There are approximately 13 in different parts of the Prospector OHV trail system. This particular one stands at Fivemile Pass, and was assembled by the Utah ATV Asoociation. Projects like this one create opportunities for partnerships and they can bring people together. Kiosks make it easier for outdoor enthusiasts to find their way around trail systems, and us feel more connected to the history and development of the areas we are in. Ahhh, spring! As the ground thaws (finally), signs I’ve designed start cropping up. The sign pictured here is now installed at Amy’s Park in Bolton Landing. It was part of a larger project of interpretive signs I did for Lake George Land Conservancy (@hikelakegeorge ). This project marries so many things I love: natural history, education, design, and trails. Researching these signs was a great winter project! I’m really proud of this work. I love the week between Christmas and the new year. When the world seems to slow down, I have ideas going a mile a minute in my head. Looking toward a new year feels hopeful to me. 🙏🏻 Before I start looking too far ahead, though, I want to take a look back on 2021. It was a difficult year, but there were some definite high points: MY FAVORITE PROJECT OF 2021: This would be a series of interpretive signs for the Lake George Land Conservancy (the photo is a sneak peek). This project involved research, nature, and design, which is why it tops my list. Fabrication and installation will take place in 2022 so I already have something to look forward to in the coming months! 🙌🏻 MOST CHALLENGING PROJECT: Whew. This was a social media campaign promoting an event. It was a whirlwind of posting and monitoring and general anxiety. It got my blood pumping for sure, which is always a good thing. 💗 MOST REWARDING PROJECT: This would be my work with Warren and Washington counties on the vaccine ad campaign. I’ve gotten to work with some incredibly dedicated people. 🎯 On the personal side of things: • I read 41 books this year (well, I listened to 8 or 9 or them). I’m always looking for recommendations, so drop them below. ⬇️ • I completed 3 woven tapestries that I can say I’m happy with. 🧶 • We had a CSA membership at Pitney Meadows Community Farm which proved to be a highlight of the summer. 🌾 I tried fennel for the first time and I liked it. Big Island Nature Park reopened to the public this summer, unveiling newly refurbished trails and facilities. A series of 11 new trail signs appear along the trails telling of the island’s past and present as native Dakota land, an amusement park, veteran’s camp, and now, the longest stretch of undeveloped waterfront on Lake Minnetonka. I designed the graphic panels with Jim Roe Museum Planning as the Interpretive Planner and writer. Pictures from last Friday's site visit with LFOLA land trust staff at McCormick Ravine. The clouds parted just long enough for a muddy stroll through the ravine's woodland forest and thick blanket of fallen leaves. It was a dramatic descent from the narrow tip of the ravine ridge to the Lake Michigan shoreline, where a recent storm tore away another chunk of the coastal bluff. (Swipe right) McCormick Ravine is one of the largest and most preserved ravine ecosystems along the Lake Michigan shoreline. It's still home to rare plants not found elsewhere in Illinois and whose current natural range is much farther north. The deep and steep V-shaped gullies were carved by the forces of gravity and water through the unsorted glacial till (end moraines from the last period of glaciation) 110' to Lake Michigan below. While ravines are dynamic landscapes carved by natural forces, they are at increased risk of man-made destabilization from urban stormwater inputs and climate change. LVB Studio's creative gears are turning for ways to visually highlight the ravine's Ecology, Geology, and Connection to Lake Michigan in a series of interpretive panels for the Preserve's new trail system. Progress check: We started working with the incredible folks at @shield.ranch in the spring of 2021, handling design and content for a family of signage, wayfinding, interpretive graphics, and donor recognition for The Campsite at Shield Ranch, an off-the-grid getaway that will host overnight campers from Austin’s @elranchitocamp program and others from the Central Texas community. Though construction of the Campsite began over the summer, the Shield Ranch Foundation hosted a groundbreaking event for their supporters last weekend. In addition to finding ourselves inspired by their mission of conservation and education, we were delighted to be able to make and launch wildflower seed-balls all over the construction site — a project first for us! A beautiful side trail has been created and signage installed on the #blueberrymountain trail at #cliffLAND. Walk through 200 metres of delicate mossy landscape and have a seat on two newly installed benches. One with a view of two large rocks amongst conifer trees, the other with a different perspective of Blueberry Mountain. Affectionately called the Artist Cove Trail (8x10”), 4” square 🐦 aluminum signs mark the trail (along with ribbon at this time). To say we’re committed to this place is an understatement. Some conceptual planning we did on this project: “This trail is a response to Kalispell’s position as the most livable town in the valley. This focuses on residents of today with needs based in the future. Each generation leaves its mark, and Kalispell is fortunate to have a character defined by a stylistically rich history.
