Fantastic first outing of the year!! Rockster really proved himself around a tough XC course. He was stellar to show jump too. Dressage was good, just a bit too excited to be out showing and his high level of fitness made it tough for him to keep his lid on. MEET DUJI: Even when I’m out on the trail, the dogs find me. We were nearing the end of our ride yesterday and had the option to take a new, shorter route to our next stop, or we could take the longer way around. We’d had an easy riding day and the horses were going well so we opted for the longer route. Ten minutes later we heard some squeaking and looked down to see a tiny ball of fluff dancing around Wasi’s feet. Immediately me and the other guide Stefan were off our horses scooping her up before she was stepped on by something much heavier then a Wasi. Filthy, infested with fleas, ticks, and worms, it was clear this barely six week old puppy had been abandoned to her fate in the mountains. It never occurred to any of us to leave her there, so I mounted back up and she rode another 20 minutes till the end of our trail with me. We’ve named her Duji Put, which means “the long way” in Serbian. One lucky decision saved this little one’s life. Thanks to the guys at @horse_adventure_serbia she’s already been treated for those fleas, ticks, and worms, and she will be cared for during the days while I’m riding and I’ll have her for the nights. BON VOYAGE Today was a big day for six of our babies as they head off to forever homes in England. Lola (was Luka), Charlie, Bowie (was Poslanie), Plik are all going to the bestest new families we could have asked for! We can’t wait to get updated on all their new life adventures! And Bosh, the no good, very bad dog who we feared no one may ever want due to his age and blindness... his happy ending is the most poignant of all. After seven years locked in a barn on a too short chain, never seeing the sun, starved nearly to death, and never knowing a kind word or hand, Bosh is ok his way to the kind of home we dream about for our babies. The mother of one of our adopters, she’s experienced with special needs dogs and specifically wanted to give a home to a dog like Bosh who might not have had another chance. He’ll be reunited with Yuni, who he knew before she left us, have a grandchild to play and snuggle with, have a new doggie sibling, and of course be given all the love and warmth he missed out on for the first part of his life. I made it through all the other goodbyes without crying; but for Bosh, I’ve cried tears of grief to see him leave, because he’s one of the dogs I’ve grown most attached too. Today we’re highlighting our beautiful Kiera! . Kiera is an livestock guardian dog, possibly a Caucasian Ovcharka, which is often found here for guarding sheep and goats. Normally this breed can be quite unfriendly but Kiera is the exact opposite! This is one of the first dogs we’ve had available for adoption that I feel would make an exceptional therapy dog. Kiera just loves people. She’s soft and sweet and smart. She’ll sit for hours letting you pet her. She’s good with young children, other dogs, cats, horses, and goats. Honestly you couldn’t ask for a nicer, more gorgeous dog to call your own. As many of you know, we’ve recently been able to finally move into the farm and house we bought last summer, which is great. But we have got a lot of work to do to make the property the perfect sanctuary for our rescues, especially the dogs who desperately need safely enclosed areas where they can run and play rather then always having to be walked on leashes. We’ve had a contractor come out who was highly recommended by a fellow rescuer here, and they’ve given us a series of quotes for converting the barns to pens, creating a mud free outdoor space, and also enclosing the majority of our yard for a big grass play area. The total is about 39,000 BGN ($25,000/€22,000/£18,000) which is quite an intimidating amount for us. But we’re hopeful that our awesome supporters will be able to help us reach our goal. Both Travis and I happen to have birthdays coming up (mine is 18 April, Travis’s 5 May) and we’re asking all our family and friends to contribute towards this fundraiser in lieu of any kind of birthday gifts. Recall practice We work on recalls with all our dogs one on one, but it can be much more challenging when they are in a pack loose this way and they have to decide if it’s worth staying with their friends or returning to me. We rely a lot on our older personal dogs (here, Wasi, Nefsi, and Dobbie) to teach the young pups and rescued street dogs that checking in with mom is the cool thing to do. ADOPTIONS HALTED We wanted to post a brief update on the puppies from Travis’s overnight rescue escapades. We’ve had so much interest in this litter already, which is always really wonderful. However we regret to inform everyone that adoptions have been halted for the time being. We’ve had these four to the vet, and as I suspected, he agrees with me that these are very likely wolf dog puppies. Wolf dogs are not just extra special mutts, or the equivalent of domestic dogs, and can not be placed in normal pet homes. They will require very special, experienced owners to ensure that they are properly raised and their unique behaviours and traits are respected. For the time being, the puppies will remain in our care while we consult with wolf dog rescues and breeders to determine the best way forward for them. The puppies all tested negative for Parvo, and appear to be in general good health aside from of course being malnourished and on the raggedy side. There’s three females and one male. They’re an incredibly calm and watchful litter of pups, which was part of what made us suspect the mix. We’ve yet to see them engage in any real play, and while they aren’t overtly unfriendly, they have no desire to interact with us in any way. None of this is surprising giving their breeding. Thankfully we have experience with wild dog mixes, so we’re equipped to handle their unique needs, but it will certainly be an interesting experience none the less. We appreciate everyone’s interest in these pups, and we hope some of those who have already submitted applications will consider rehoming one of the other puppies we have available! GOATS IN COATS! We’ve had an extreme temperature drop here in Bulgaria, from 16 degrees Celsius to -12 literally in the space of only a few hours! When we went out for evening feeds tonight, we found the goats clearly cold and uncomfortable. We have a fully enclosed area for them that in theory would keep them warmer, but every time we try to lock them up there, they object strongly. They like their bigger, open pen that lets in air and sunshine and even the chilly wind; they just needed some extra help tonight with the sudden change in temperature. Thanks to an amazing donation recently sent down from Sweden, we just so happened to have outdoor coats on hand that fit the goats perfectly. Now they can stay warm and still enjoy their bigger area. We’ve named this poor soul Teterbol, Tet for short, as a nod to the history that brought him to us. He left his corner for the very first time today, and looked at Travis fully without total fear, a major step for him. We’ve mostly left him to himself these first two days, so he can adjust in his own time to the smells and sounds and chaos that make up life here at the Menagerie Sanctuary. This little one has a very long road to recovery ahead of him, but we’re pleased to see even this small bit of progress so early on. We’ve got a long day today after a long fews days just past. Me & Po and our friend @luisapaige97 transport dogs for a rescue. As a dog rescue its classed as essential work. Due to my health and the pure extent of the job my friend is required as well as being a member of the rescue volunteer staff alongside myself. This involves a 900 mile round trip and 3 hotel night stays. Today’s journey home is 7hrs long 🙈 Po has been a superstar. Being a canine comfort and happy traveller to the rescues. Going with me to shops and pitstops in work mode. Another day and then it’s break time until the next trip 🙈. Our current stay of two nights at the premier Inn at Braehead Glasgow has been amazing. BON VOYAGE! We said farewell to little Alba (was Stupka) and Ocem this morning. They’re on their way to their forever homes in the U.K. and we’re so happy for them. But saying goodbye always comes with some sadness, especially in cases like Ocem, who we’ve raised from a tiny puppy to a strapping six month old almost as big as his momma now. He’s the first of his litter to head off and our heart aches just a bit to lose him. It was bittersweet watching Momma and Ocem’s own farewells. Roki has been one of our toughest rehabilitation cases, hands down. I know it’s hard to believe looking at that sweet teddy bear face. But fiercely aggressive, to everyone and everything, he was destined to be shot if we wouldn’t agree to take him. Small dogs are not our forte and we had some serious reservations about how he would fit into our pack of much larger dogs, especially if he challenged one of them. We agreed to take him on the understanding that we really couldn’t make any promises, but we would do our best. Two months later, Roki is a changed dog. While he will likely never be safe to be adopted out, Roki has managed to find his place here in our pack. And he’s learned to trust us too. His cranial sacral therapist, Tamara, has worked wonders helping us turn this fierce, distrustful, damaged dog into a silly little guy who loves to chases balls, snuggle on my pillow, and even play with his (much larger) new friends. Garden goats! Meet Charity, Patience, Prudence, Gluttony (little male) and Lenka (left to right). These cuties lived on the little farm that we’ve purchased in Bulgaria, and when we bought the farm, the rest of the herd was sold off for slaughter (farming is a rough business, I’m much too soft for it 🙈). We couldn’t save all of the goats from that fate, they numbered over 100, but we were able to save these beauties. While the goats are mostly pets because we always wanted some, they do serve an important role in the menagerie. Horses, of which we have plenty, are not very good grazers. They eat the grass but very little else, and in the mountain environment where we’ll be living, that means the pasture land can quickly be overrun with other plant life. Goats eat pretty much everything, they’re natural “strimmers.” So while we love them dearly and will be spoiling them rotten when we’re finally with them, they also have a job to do... Travis in particular is extremely happy to have them on board since he really hates strimming up there! In trade, he has to milk them (a sight to see before I left)! For now, the goats are living the garden life at a friend’s house until we can all be together again. HAPPILY EVER AFTER: How many of our followers remember Kova, the very first of our travelling menagerie rescues? For those that haven’t been with us that long, two years ago we picked Kova up on a mountain pass our first day in BiH. She was horrifically underweight and covered in fleas, and there was no way she would survive a winter in the mountains. We were going up the mountain when we saw her, and I made Travis turn around (not easy towing a caravan on small mountain roads!!) even though our gas tank was on empty. We literally coasted into a petrol station on the other side of the mountain, where there also happened to be a veterinary clinic where Kova had her first exam (picture 2). She’s named for that mountain pass, Kovachika. Kova was adopted by an Air Force couple stationed in Italy, where she continues to live her very best life. Wasi and Gabbie are already practicing for how crowded our little Jeep will be when we have to leave Bulgaria in 11 days. Usually I love to travel but this time, I’m genuinely scared to be on my own going into the winter with no way of knowing for sure how long I will be back. Worse is knowing that I’m dumping poor Travis with the responsibility for all the dogs and horses and cats when The DogHouse still isn’t ready to accomodate everyone and we are so very short of funding. Exciting things happening here as we start preparations for wintertime with all the horses finally home with us! Winter hay is cheapest and guaranteed available at this time of year, whereas if we were to wait until later in the season, we would pay double the price and there’s no way to know if there would actually be hay available, which would a total disaster with 14 horses here to feed! So here’s our first load coming to this location, with another 143 bales inbound 🙈. We also have another 150 round bales stacked and ready to go at the new farm we bought a few villages away! Plus we have about 500-750 small square bales already stored or currently inbound for easy transport if weather is too bad for moving the round ones. FOR ADOPTION: This litter of puppies and their momma were on the streets of a village just outside Sofia, where they weren’t welcomed by most of the locals. We stepped in after learning that there were attempts to poison them using antifreeze on bread 😡. FOR ADOPTION: The fun never stops... Travis was on another midnight rescue trip last night, spending 10 hours on the road to rescue this litter of seven puppies, plus what we’re fairly certain is their older brother from the momma’s previous litter, from the side of the highway. In this case, there were some caring locals that were keeping the puppies fed and watered while waiting for Travis’s rescue transport services (this has been about a week in planning). One local in particular was wonderful in keeping in touch with Travis daily, and spending time with the puppies to help socialise them so Travis wouldn’t struggle to catch them in the dark. Last night, this fabulous man was at his friend’s birthday party, which he LEFT to accompany Travis to the location and help round up the puppies. It renewed our faith in the potential of young Bulagrians to change the culture of how animals are treated here to see this man doing so much for this dumped litter. They’re now safe and sound in our new house (which we’re turning into a “dog house,” and that allows for quarantining puppies safely after our Parvo experience. The puppies are about six weeks old, thin and wormy with rough, not so nice coats right now, but overall appear mostly healthy. Big brother, who we’ve named Brat (“brother” in Bulgarian), seems to be in excellent health and is very nurturing of his younger siblings. They’ve already been treated for fleas and ticks, and over the next few days they will be dewormed, parvo tested, receive their mono Parvo vaccines presuming negative tests, and undergo aptitude testing to help us match them with the best forever homes as we get requests from adopters. FOR ADOPTION: Benzina! This beautiful girl is desperate for a home where she can swim, do scent training, and play, play, play! Rescued from life at a petrol station (hence the name), Benzi is a gorgeous pointer type with a personality and looks to die for. Fully potty trained, crate trained, and leash trained, she’s got an excellent off leash recall and lovely manners no matter where she goes. Benzi is a bit too enthusiastic to be safe around very small dogs and cats, though she lives with both currently, she must be watched in their presence. It’s clear that she was often hit or deliberately scared away from people quite a bit during her life at the petrol stations so she can be nervous with new people and it’s important not to lunge at her to catch her. FINAL UPDATE: PARVO PUPPIES Yesterday, our baby boy Ramo was finally able to return home, having survived a horrific case of Parvovirus that kept him hospitalised for 19 days, and took the lives of e other beloved puppies. Ramo is visibly happy to be home, and we’re so thrilled to have him back. I’m reluctant to let him out of my sight even for a few moments yet. As those of you who have followed Ramo’s story know, there was a point 11 days ago when his chances of survival were under 10% and his body had been so ravaged by the disease that I asked the vet to humanely euthanise him. I was quietly furious when the vet refused and argued to let him fight until the end of the day. I have never in my life been so grateful to have been so wrong, and for someone to have refused to give up when I had lost hope. Ramo owes his life to that vet, and the team who cared for him round the clock for nearly 3 weeks, literally willing him to live. There is nothing I can ever do or say that will repay them (though paying off the bill may be a start 😂). We are also so grateful to all of you, our followers, our supporters, those who liked and shared and donated and sent positive thoughts and prayed and rooted for Ramo as he fought... and also for those who grieved with us for the three we lost. You kept us all strong through this, one of the hardest things I’ve ever gone through, and we will never forget it. Thank you. Ramo was originally intended to be sent to England for assistance dog training, but after his broken shoulder, we planned to adopt him as a family pet. Now, Ramo will remain apart of the Travelling Menagerie family for the rest of his life... we’ve been through too much together to let him go. I know that every time I look at him, I will remember his sister Tulen, little Mechta, and sweet Kus. I miss them, every day, and I grieve deeply for their loss, but Ramo’s life is a beautiful way to honour them. Lila had a rough evening as it was time for her professional photo shoot. Despite keeping it very brief and as easy as possible, it was traumatising for her to be handled so much. Afterwards, I was feeling horribly guilty and worried that in just a few minutes I had managed to undo two and a half months worth of patience and progress with her. She’s such a sensitive puppy and this was the first time I’d forced her to tolerate me handling her that way. The photos were important to help get her adopted, but I was wondering after if they were worth her fear. So later on, I was pleased to see her come running up after me to feed the horses like usual. And then she shocked me by letting me pick her up and hold her. I snuggled her in my lap for a bit, and even after I stopped petting her and she was totally free to get down, she hung out there for a few extra minutes before scampering off. RESCUED: Last night, Travis drove 11 hours round trip to rescue this sweet girl. We’re calling her Lovets, which means “hunter” in Bulagrian, as she is a hunting hound. We call her Love for short. I suspect she’s a tricoloured Serbian Hound who was likely abandoned by her owner for reasons that are anybody’s guess. She had been hanging around a hotel, where were considerably less then thrilled to have her there, when a visiting couple bonded with her and sent out a FB plea for help before the hotel simply got rid of the nuisance. A fellow rescuer friend of ours shared the post, and we stepped in. So far, Love has proven to be dog friendly, cat friendly, horse friendly, goat friendly, and child friendly. She just loves a cuddle, travels well in a car, and doesn’t seem inclined to wander much yet. She already loves sleeping on the bed. She’s fairly decent shape aside from being very undernourished. She’s got a beautiful coat and lovely long ears. She’s an adult, certainly over two but I suspect older. She’ll see a vet tomorrow for routine vaccines and check-up and to schedule her spay. It’s been two months since we rescued Jari’ and his siblings... two months of being patient, of watching these puppies slowly come out of their shells, of seeing them begin to trust me in the smallest increments possible. It’s been two months, and of the four, Jari’ is the only puppy I can reach out and stroke on a somewhat regular basis, and even he still shies away about 50% of the time. It’s been two months and Naji has only just started accompanying us up to the horses. It’s been two months and Lila responds to her name by looking at me and taking two steps back. It’s been two months and Eon has survived an attack by the neighbours dog and a small bout of Parvo, but still can’t bring himself to relax when I rub his belly. Puppies are usually quick to come around, but these little ones had already been through so much in their young lives... some people would rush them, chase them around, constantly pick them up, basically force themselves on them in hopes of bringing them around. And there have been times over the last two months when I’ve been frustrated enough to wonder if I should try that route. But I’ve stuck with my instincts, and continued to wait patiently for them to choose to want to be with me. And it’s starting to pay off. It’s been two months, and today Jari’ jumped on the bed, rolled over for belly rubs, and reached up to give me his very first kisses. Little Kus passed away this morning from Parvo. Kus was a foster for another rescue that I was blessed to spend two weeks loving. He came to me so shy and unsure, with a belly full of worms. Over the last two weeks, I got to see him come out of his shell and become a silly puppy who loved to have his belly rubbed and was constantly pawing at me for more pets. He slept on the pillow at my head and liked to bark at the kittens when they tried to take his spot. He was the best friend to Ramo while Ramo was restricted with his broken shoulder, never playing too rough or hurting him; but keeping him company and being his nap time buddy. We are all going to miss Kus Kus, but me and Ramo will miss him most of all. I know there was nothing more I could do. Kus tested negative for Parvo the day we took him in, so there was no reason to suspect he was carrying the virus. The Parvo hit fast, too fast, even with me recognising the symptoms and getting him to the vet as soon as they manifested... but it stills feels like I failed. I’m trying to take comfort in knowing that he spent his last two weeks on earth being loved and cuddled and having friends to play with rather than living alone and scared on he streets as he had for the early part of his life. Thankfully, we’re very on top of vaccines and all but four of our other rescues had already been vaccinated so the risk to them contracting the virus is low. The four who were not yet vaccinated were tested immediately and then vaccinated when the tests came back negative. The already vaccinated puppies will be tested today and then vaccinated again as a precaution. Kus wasn’t yet fully integrated with the pack, so chances are slim of a spread, but we have to be careful.
