Paul Chambers, who would have turned 89 yesterday if he didn’t succumb to tuberculosis at the age of 33, released his final album as a leader in 1960, just 5 years after his first appearance on a recording with Cannonball Adderley. During his short life and career, he played on so many iconic albums, from Kind of Blue and Giant Steps, to Brilliant Corners and Blues & The Abstract Truth. 1st Bassman is one of his 7 or so albums as a leader and it is perhaps one of the best examples of an album that is truly bass-led. Where so many others rely on traditionally structured compositions with unison horn sections, Chambers (or really Yusef Lateef who wrote the bulk of the pieces here) leaves a lot of space for bass. Lateef joins the group here in addition to providing 5 of the 6 pieces. We also have Tommy Turrentine, Curtis Fuller, Wynton Kelly and Lex Humphries. Each piece is noteworthy, but Lateef’s solo on Bass Region is particularly great, in part due to the freedom offered by the indistinct chord progression. Wynton Kelly takes full advantage of the lack of restraints as well, playing melodically in a more free context. I love it that this album doesn’t include standards. You really get a sense, through the partnership of Lateef and Chambers, of the bassist’s artistry. His prior album Go is another, though 1st Bassman doesn’t a better job of establishing the bass as a dominant voice in my opinion.

709. The Prodigals - "Marsha"/"Judy" 45, 1958. These obscure groups sometimes require more in-depth research than the usual 5-10 minutes that I put in for these posts, but I finally gathered that the Prodigals was a doo wop group from Clarksburg, West Virginia that started out as the Jumping Jacks in the mid-'50s. They changed their name to the Chords about a year later & made a local name for themselves by playing dances around the central West Virginia area, soon making their way up to Chicago where they were poised to sign a deal with the Vee-Jay sublabel Falcon Records. Another name change took place during their first recording session when they found out that another group called the Chords existed, so they became the Prodigals & released two 45s in this incarnation. "Marsha" was their regional hit in West Virginia, Ohio & Pennsylvania—Pittsburgh in particular, which explains its presence in the ol' family record collection. Lots of pops 'n' skips on this side, but not so much that it adversely affects my enjoyment of what is a pretty good tune residing in that sweet spot where rhythm & blues, rock 'n' roll & doo wop intersect. I particularly enjoy the semi-bluesy guitar picking going on in the song, as it raises "Marsha" to a level that is above average. "Judy" is the B-side ballad where lead vocalist Chuck Collins (aka Troy Parrish) demonstrates that he really does have one helluva singing voice. There's a lot of sweet-&-sensitive-boy vocalists in this record collection & quite a few just come off as a bunch of undercover horndogs with nice voices, but I actually believe Chuck Collins when he says that he really loves Judy. However, he also seems to feel the same way about Marsha too & that could potentially cause him some trouble down the line. Not a bad 45 at all, especially on this rainy morning where these songs lend themselves well to the general vibe.
After his last record for Sun, Billy Emerson continued on to other labels, starting with Vee-Jay Records in mid 1956. In December of 1957, “Do Yourself A Favor” was released. A poppy upbeat blues number with still enough of Emerson’s signature sound present.
