I’m surprised I hadn’t watched VELVET BUZZSAW (2019) until this evening considering it reunites writer-director Dan Gilroy with his NIGHTCRAWLER (2014) actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo, a film of which I’m a huge fan (and for which Jake’s performance should have been nominated for an Oscar, damn it. 😡) Set in the contemporary art scene of L.A., VB begins as a very different movie before heading in a ‘supernatural horror’ direction. Aesthetically, this movie looks great, and I’m not just referring to Jake’s various states of undress, with solid performances from its talented cast, and a really interesting script. I get that this is a critique on..well..critiques and Dan Gilroy tries to make a point of the pretentious atmosphere of modern art scene where collectors and buyers do backflips trying to look into what meaning a piece of art have (or not) but he fumbles the ball and leaves a puzzling and unfulfilled thriller that had the talent but half of the substance. #horrormoviequest Wednesday post for Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)! 🎨🩸 “A satirical black comedy horror film about the contemporary art scene of Los Angeles. After paintings by an unknown artist are discovered, a supernatural force enacts revenge on those who have allowed their greed to get in the way of art.” I’ve been meaning to watch this movie for years now. When it first came out I was like, “An artist horror film?! AND it’s got Jake Gyllenhaal?!? Sign me up!” I personally loved it. I was surprised to find it also stars Tom Sturridge, Toni Collette, and Natalia Dyer too. Not to mention the legendary John Malkovich. Really just an all around A+ casting. It almost feels ironic to even be writing a review about a movie about critiques. Funnier still, many of the actual reviews on this movie are bad. We’re really working in so many layers here and I think it all boils down to personal taste. Remember kids, horror is subjective. And **spoiler** the end of the movie also places emphasis on this when Dease’s paintings, going for 8+ figures in the high end galleries, sells for $5 on the street. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that. Today is Daveed Diggs’ 42nd birthday. Born in Oakland, Diggs graduated from Berkeley High School and from Brown University with a degree in theatre arts. After graduation, he worked as a substitute teacher. Early in his career, he performed in experimental theater and met Lin-Manuel Miranda through Thomas Kail. In 2015, he started portraying Thomas Jefferson and Marquis de Lafayette in the off-Broadway version of Hamilton (Disney+). He won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical as well as the 2016 Grammy. Digg’s post Hamilton career has been busy with movie roles in Zootopia (Disney+), Wonder (Apple TV), Ferdinand (Disney+), Blindspotting (Pluto TV), Velvet Buzzsaw (Netflix), Soul (Disney+), and DC League of Super-Pets (Max). His television roles include The Get Down (Netflix), Black-ish (ABC), Star Wars Resistance (Disney+), Star Trek: Prodigy (Paramount+), and The Good Lord Bird (Paramount+) as Frederick Douglass. Last year, Diggs portrayed the voice of Sebastian in The Little Mermaid (Disney+).
