Infested (2023) Ahh Spiders love them or hate them they can be creepy some can be beautiful but damn this film is like a new arachnophobia-driven movie that will make your skin crawl more than you could imagine from French Director Sébastien vaniček (who is soon to helm an Evil dead movie) the film is so much more than a spider horror it has a tangled web of themes. When Kaleb is about to turn 30 he has never been lonelier. He's fighting with his sister over their inheritance and has cut ties with his best friend but he is Passionate about exotic animals he comes home with an unusual breed of spider which we see isn't so friendly at the beginning of the film he happens to think keeping it in a shoebox for a short time would be okay he was wrong when it slips away. Soon his underprivileged suburb is thrown into chaos as the deadly arachnids multiply. And authorities have ordered the building to be placed under quarantine, and the project's inhabitants are forced to live in lockdown alongside terrifying spiders that are becoming bigger and bigger. This film shows how bad low-income housing is in France living in a rundown building with timed lights that run on a wind-up timer this plays into the plot later in the film that made me panic so much it's all very dimly lit and as you know spiders like to move when it's dark you will be jumping like crazy as the film is very fast-paced and it throws you in this world. The character building is okay Sometimes it feels like when it starts to develop it slows and doesn't let it fully develop it's very surface-level stuff here for a few of the characters it changes tone quite quickly but that does kind of help with the scares. The spiders are done so well, it feels almost to real like this could happen it's also shot brilliantly dark and terrifying and makes you want light desperately it's worth the time to watch this. The Deeper You Dig (2019) 💀💀💀💀💀💀 6/10 "The Deeper You Dig" is a haunting indie horror film that leaves a lasting impression. Sunshine (2007): 3.5/5 stars I recently watched a movie where Cillian Murphy plays a physicist who has to detonate a bomb. It wasn’t Oppenheimer. Like Oppenheimer, Sunshine has a star-studded cast, featuring Rose Byrne, Chris Evans, and Michelle Yeoh, among others. This crew is stationed on the Icarus II, on a mission to save the world from the dying sun by functionally creating a new one with a “little big bang.” Naturally, things go wrong, and they need to make extreme life-or-death decisions to weigh the fate of the world with their personal survival. I found the plot a bit difficult to follow at a couple of points, and would have appreciated a bit more depth to its spiritual themes surrounding the divinity of the Sun and the nature of determinism. That being said, it was a wild and enjoyable ride from start to red-hot finish. In my mind, Oppenheimer was a prequel to Sunshine, since Cillian felt so bad about potentially ending the world that he later had to go on a mission to save it. That somehow makes the movie even better. This was a short fan film that I got the check out. This shows you the events of Michael Myers escaping from the mental hospital and then picks up after he was shot by Dr. Loomis. I thought this was well-made. A solid slasher that brings in the character of Ben Tramer. My biggest gripe is that I believe it doesn’t sync up perfectly to lead into Part 2. 🕷️INFESTED 🕷️ So this film literally had my skin crawling! The spiders looked so realistic! I had my hands to my face squirming! But I loved it and it’s one of my fave watches so far this year! it had a good storyline, kept me entertained and had me at the edge of my seat 😅 I think my fear of spiders definitely made this more effective for me so it might be different for yourself if you’re not bothered by them. 🏡Book Review: We Used To Live Here by Marcus Kliewer Pub Date: June 18 2024 Eve and Charlie are a young couple who have just purchased a beautiful Victorian house, at the top of an isolated, thickly forested mountain. When Eve answers a knock at the door, she is faced with a strange man and his family. And they want to come inside. A people pleaser to her bones, Eve’s first mistake is letting them in. Everything quickly falls apart from there. From the beginning, this novel sounded different, unique to so much of the horror/suspense on the market recently. The blurb described it as “Turn of the Key meets Parasite” however, I’d liken it closer to The Book of Accidents by Chuck Wendig or I’ve Been Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid. There’s a constant feeling of unease; that there’s something off about the house and that something terrifying lurks just around the corner. The author did an excellent job creating suspense and dread as well as writing several particularly scary scenes where I found myself with wide eys, muttering “holy shit”. I was stoked to see Abigail (2024) from the first time I saw the trailer. I also knew I needed to see it in theaters, it just looked like that kind of movie. I grew up loving The Lost Boys and Blade so I was excited for a fun, bloody vampire movie. When 6 criminals kidnap a 12 year old girl, thinking they are holding her ransom because of her super rich father. What was supposed to be a simple 24 hour babysitting job following the kidnapping, turns into a shit show when they realize she is a couple hundred year old vampire. This movie was great, I really enjoyed. It is everything you want in a vampire movie; violence, blood and some extra fun kills with the vampire strength. This movie gives you all that plus throw in some bad ass ballerina moves and some wicked scary teeth and super fun kills. The acting was great, the whole cast together was fun and the characters were interesting and kept the story going. Alisha Weir as Abigail was amazing, I am excited to see her hopefully in more horror movies. Abigail was exactly what I had hoped for, a really damn good vampire movie. If it’s still playing in theaters near you, it’s worth it for the music and how beautifully loud it is and all the screams. The Man with No Shadow, Bonnie Quinn (2019) I’ve been frequenting Reddit’s r/NoSleep subreddit since around 2016. It is a treasure trove of short horror stories submitted anonymously in a thread format. Similar to the CreepyPasta website but a lot more random. Every now and then I found a series of stories across several posts. I also really enjoyed the stories involving a list of eerie rules that the protagonist must follow. My favorite was How to Survive Camping. 20 detailed rules that offered a glimpse into a terrifying forest, but then…then there was a story. Then a series. The series turned into a novel with each post being a chapter. The full story is across 4 novels. Kate runs a campground. It’s been in her family for generations. She hands out a pamphlet to each camping group to make sure they have an enjoyable time and survive the experience. You see, there’s truth to all the folklore you hear rumors about, and she’s just trying to make sure people pay attention should they run into a special resident. It’s a weekly struggle but that’s the life of Kate. At least until one of these “residents” begins trying to leave. “Don’t eat food you find sitting out around the campsite. It’s not yours and worse, it might be an offering and you will offend whatever it is intended for.” My ancient evil horror nerves are in overdrive after reading this. The detailed world that Quinn has written is what I describe as “next level horror”. Real life experiences described from an angle you weren’t expecting that sometimes are about tried and true horror themes yet in a fresh way. They’re upgraded with a feral-styled evil that is unforgiving, inescapable, and once experienced, it’s difficult to go back to normal horror. There’s no time for dread. The story unfolds very quickly and a LOT of content is compacted into these 200 pages: History of the site, her family, the lore of the campground entities, and then how it ties together just in this first book. It flows well and you couldn’t really tell that this was spaced out across several months and reads like a very dark Supernatural story arc. Don’t follow the lights.  5 Stars Progression: 10/10 Dread: 5/10 Gore: 9/10

It wonderfully portrayed the realization of a hopeless cause. That not every person in dire situations are able to immediately make sound judgement. That hopelessness that no one will and can save you. It was that kind of scare that sinks right in to you. And the ending, I love the ending. I love the thought of the last character being dragged back to the place where all her nightmares had begun. That she would have to relived that kind of hell again. That feeling of despair was what was portrayed in the last few pages. But thats just about it of what I liked in this story. I’ll admit, I had to attempt #Nope once before but I got bored in my first watch through and shut it off. This time I continued on and I’m not gonna lie, I enjoyed it. I think all the hype it had before built it up to high for me that when I first started it I was disappointed. Now, time has passed and I’m in that head space I kind of need to be in when watching something like this. I still feel it is slow in the beginning, but once it finds its stride in the plot it becomes a ride! The second half achieves to have me on the edge of my seat wishing that the first part could be a tad bit better. The first half serves its purpose in setting up everything but man the low energy of most of the performances sometimes became painful to watch. The real interesting portion of the first half is all the Gordy stuff that ends up being reflected through the rest of the film. I also really liked all the set lingo being used. I will also admit that this is my favorite #JordanPeele project as of right now. Night Swim - ☆☆1/2 Just wait until I get that Chlorine buddy, see ya pool demon. From Blumhouse we've got a story of a major baseball player struggling with MS(played by Wyatt Russel) along with his family as they move into this new home with a suspicious pool in the backyard(also it kills from what we see in the opening) Miraculously the baseball player starts to recover but at a sinister cost. Honestly as silly as a demonic pool is I think the story is pretty good with how they handle why you would keep getting into the pool as usually something like this I feel would normally be comedic. The little backstory we get on why the opening happens is a little wack though. This captivated my attention, and I could NOT put it down. Honestly, with what Jo-won goes through, I couldn't help but feel a sort of good for her through the book, which is wild, to say the least! Infested (France, 2024) ❤️❤️❤️❤️🖤 A bug collector purchases a mysterious foreign spider that rapidly reproduces and takes over his apartment complex. “We’ll die in here!” This was a fun creepy-crawly creature-feature! Here’s why I loved it. ❤️ I’m a spider lover, so the biggest challenge this film faced in my case was finding a way to get under my skin. Because the spiders weren’t ordinary (that’s all I’ll say without giving too much away) it succeeded! ❤️ Also as a spider lover, I was worried that I’d see a lot of ignorance-based spider hate in this film, but instead I saw the exact opposite! I love how they included a character who doesn’t kill animals and explained that spiders are mostly harmless. Too bad he was wrong in this case 😬 ❤️ I really liked the main character, and not just because he also sees the beauty in creatures most people find ugly. He was unique in other ways, like the little detail about him not swearing. ❤️ I liked the backstory behind the characters and their relationships to each other as well as the sense of community they built with other residents in the apartment building. It made for some gut-wrenching moments. 🖤 Some of the character drama ran long. Tender Is The Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica I think we have a cult classic on our hands here. If you are a horror, dystopian, or thriller lover then you may well love this read. We follow our main character through his repetitive life in a world where animals contracted a deadly virus, leading humanity to legalise cannibalism and rear "humans", aka special meat, to the slaughter. The MC is miserable but excruciatingly good at what he does, working at a processing plant where the human cattle are slaughtered and butchered. We see into his everyday life, the normalcy of the horrors and the extent of what grief does to a man. I want to say more but can't without spoiling. This book is addictive, and I love how morally grey it is. There are conspiracy theories and arguments for and against their government-it is intoxicating to read. I love that there are often no strict answers, you are driven closer to the main character because you are only allowed his world view. In some scenarios I would have enjoyed more description of the surroundings, but this is such a small finnicky preference it can hardly be used against the book. I found this book gruesome, and I really adore that it doesn't have this clear message, it's not trying to unpack anything. I saw some one star reviews that didn't like the book for this reason, but for me? It's needed. It makes it what it is and represents the human horrors in such a fierce and true light that I cannot possibly fault it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐🌠

Infested (2023) is finally on Shudder so I had to watch it. I’ve been hearing a lot of great things about Infested; plus I grew up seeing Arachnophobia when I was a kid so I wanted to bring back that nostalgic fear of spiders. Kaleb buys a rare and seemingly illegal desert spider from the back room of a local shop. Being a reptile and bug guy he thinks nothing of it and brings it home to add to his collection. When the spider gets loose in his run down apartment complex it turns into an infestation that no one could have imagined. Once the police lockdown and quarantine the building, it becomes a fight to escape and survive. This was a creepy and fun creature movie. These spiders were nasty and creepy as hell; the way they moved and the sounds they made were amazing. The webs, especially in that garage room and the attic space were so gross, I would die if I had to touch those. Besides the creepiness of the spider and the anxiety they brought; I was pretty let down by the movie. It was fun and I’m glad I watched it for free but it just didn’t live up to the hype for me and I don’t know about you but I have questions about the end. The woods are real ⭐️ 3/10 Director: Alix Lambert Writers: Matt Dellapina, Sean Christopher Lewis Production companys: BRIC TV, Little Ark Films Run time: 1hr 20 mins Release date: 12th March 2024 There is alot of spiritual/religious horror movies out there I enjoy, but this one was rather dull. I felt like it was overly religious and was preaching to me to convert me, it was too much. I waited through the whole movie for a twist or something to pull me back in that didn't come. The cinematography was good however very relaxing, and the actors did there best, for having a very low budget and filmed in 12 days I heard. So to take that into consideration I applaud the cast and crew for what they did pull together. It had a very folk lore spiritual feel to the whole thing but wouldn't really put it in the horror category, could of made a great mystery if it didn't feel incomplete. It had some good dialogue but by the end I was still confused. When I'm getting ready to write ghostie, I like to read ghostie stuff to set the tone. And this by @mjmarsauthor is one of the best I've read in a while! An excellent plot! Kyle lives in the home of his ancestors, a notorious haunted house. He decides to recreate a seance with friends his distant relative performed years ago. Not one but five terrifying ghosts were summoned and subsequently banished. Until now. Now, Kyle and his friends have unwittingly released them once again. But it's not the house they're haunting but themselves. And nothing will stop them until they achieve their ultimate goal-their very lives. Great writing, lots of creepy, haunting scenes, and lots of unexpected moments. Maar wat voor mens? In Sissy (2022) zien we de wereld vanuit twintiger Cecilia, die op een dag haar voormalige BFF tegenkomt. Deze Emma nodigt haar prompt uit voor haar vrijgezellenfeestje. Tijdens deze trip loopt alles anders dan Cecilia zou willen. In meerdere scènes maken we kennis met Cecilia’s leven, waarin ze een succesvol influencer is, maar zelf kampt met onzekerheden en paniekaanvallen. Dat geeft veel diepte aan het personage, maar ook aan het onderwerp. Flashbacks laten ons zo nu en dan iets weten over de vriendschap die Emma en Cecilia (toen steevast Sissy genoemd) hadden. Ze beloofden elkaar nooit te verlaten. Helaas stookte er toen al een ander meisje in hun band: Alex. En laat zij ook net op het feestje te zijn. Dat dit vrijgezellenfeest zich afspeelt in een select gezelschap, in een afgelegen villa in de Australische binnenlanden, zorgt voor een beklemmend sfeertje. Them: The Scare (2024) The Score: 9 out of 10 Where to watch: Prime Video While navigating the racially charged tensions between the LAPD and the visible minorities in Los Angeles, a detective tracks down a killer who may have ties to her family. Review: Them continues to be a strong horror series, diving into racial tensions and adding evil of the non-human variety in the mix. The Scare is damn good, though I do wish it went with less tread content (eg. the entity at the center of it). It’s still plenty freaky and has a ton of grisly death, and those wanting those heavy doses of social commentary in a story that re-examines racial tensions will find a lot here, and the visuals are unique and often full of menace. I love a good found footage movie so I was super excited when my horror groups monthly movie rental was The Glenarma Tapes (2023). Plus I had never seen any Irish horror movies yet so even better. The movie follows four friends as they head to the Glenarma forest after overhearing two teachers talking about meeting up there. Thinking they are going to catch their teachers having an affair they head off into the woods after them. What ends up happening once they get to the woods is not what they had in mind, not at all! This was a great found footage movie, I really enjoyed it. It was well paced and didn’t lose my attention in the beginning when they were building the story. Once you get to the forest it was all fun and excitement. Stine "The scariest address of all" The Frasier family are excited to move into their new home... in Shadyside... on Fear Street. It goes without saying that they've just moved into a house of horror. Whoops. The House of Evil is the first in the 99 Fear Street trilogy and Stine doesn't hold back on the craziness. Walls filled with rats, green vomit spewing from faucets, heads in the attic and black tar pits (hello 'Curse of The Mummy's Tomb'). Yes, Stine heaps on the 'haunted house' tropes but Fear Street always felt better when things got spooky and this side-trilogy certainly delivers. I'm keeping this one spoiler free but a KILLER twist at the end and some notable cliffhangers/unanswered questions should make any Stine fan pick up its successor. Can we also take a moment to appreciate how 90s this cover is? Top marks. Favourite line: "Reaching down from the ceiling, the hand darkened around him - until Mr. Frasier appeared to have no head at all." Rating: 5/5 Published: 1994
