◖ Look! It’s a wild Riften! It’s so hard to get pictures of her, let alone her true personality, but she came alive on this hike so I was shocked when I saw this shot 😭 Ya’ll yesterday was a banner day for my kiddos!! . I brought this lady with me to work without Quest yesterday because he gets way too stressed in the kennels. I realized I’ve never left Quest home without me and Riften before so I was super curious how he would do and I was told he was so good! Calm, quiet and didn’t stir or ask for anything until later in the evening! I was prepared with a stuffed bone and @kairosfordogs CBD, but I’m so glad to hear he was relaxed! . Riften on the other hand came to work with me to get her second set of vaccinations. She was SO good in kennels all by herself and without me. She played with a kong wobbler and laid around. Her exam went great, her cyst still looks good and they loved how chill and relaxed she was to let them do whatever they wanted. (She’s who I practiced blood draws on once. She’s so patient 😂) AND she lost a whole pound! Which is a feat for her because she’s a struggle to lose weight with. Riften is finally under 50lbs and we’re that much closer to getting her back in shape. I also had her teeth looked at by our dental tech to see if maybe a light cleaning was in need just for shits and gigs. She asked how old she was and was super impressed by how great her teeth looked for 8 years old! . ◖ The look I get when I have to stop cuddling and go to work. 😩 . Last night was the best night! Quest usually always sleeps in bed with me as my little spoon, so I’m pretty used to it. It’s weird when he doesn’t sleep in bed. Riften on the other hand hasn’t been one to cuddle much in the years I’ve had her; very rarely. But last night, Quest lay at my feet and Riften laid between me and my girlfriend. She snuggled her face into the crook of my arm and a paw on my shoulder. With her gentle breath against my cheek I watched her eyes close as she fell asleep and started snoring! I’ll admit I cried a little. She has NEVER fallen asleep on me before. And guess what? I woke up with her still sleeping hard and soundly between us. . ◖ It’s the first official day of fall! 🍂 As much as I adore this season, I’m a little sad that summer is over because I only JUST got to use my new camping gear and it was amazing! At the beginning of the summer I was so motivated to do so many adventures, however, now that it’s over I’m realizing I didn’t do nearly as much as I wanted. . ◖ It’s grateful looking expressions like this that remind me that I’m doing right by my dogs. That—even though I know there’s always room to do even more—they’re getting the best things I can get for them. Part of that comes with their diet and the things I will keep making sure they won’t go without. . Some of you long time followers will know I’ve fed a few different kibbles in the past, constantly switching for one with better ingredients. That I’ve always been on the hunt for the most enriching and nourishing combination for their meals; ways to make feeding exciting for them. ◖ I love the look this kid gives me when he checks in. From day one he had a natural check in that I rewarded and despite it being mixed with the lack of confidence that we’re working on to get him to explore further away without me, its made his trail manners near perfect. . Just this weekend we were walking a river trail and I let them off-leash. They’ll run up ahead and came back again and again. Then we started to come up on a group of people. They trotted up ahead, got as far as they usually do, and then returned to touch my hand. They were so impressed that they were able to be off-leash—noting that theirs would just run away—and how they came back to me seeing that I didn’t give them any verbal commands. They were basically convinced I can speak to them telepathically. ◖ I’m not sure if anyone actually knows this, but neither of my dogs are my heart dogs. I love Quest and Riften so incredibly much, but I can confidently say they’re not my heart dogs. It seems very common in this community that there’s a heart dog behind every account, but for me that’s not the case. . Part of me can’t help the envy that comes with hearing some talk about their bond with their heart dogs. How I wish I had that—to know what it feels like. But that envy made me question if I was doing things right. If I was being a good dog mom. It made me question my relationship with my dogs. I felt guilty not being in the same page as so many others are. But I’ve come to accept that it’s nothing to feel guilty about and not having a heart dog doesn’t mean you don’t love your current dogs unconditionally! . Maybe they’re out there somewhere waiting for me to rescue them. Maybe they’re not. One of which was started by an abandoned campfire. PLEASE, be responsible and fire smart. Here’s a couple tips to make your adventures fire hazard free! . . 1.) Check the forecast!! If it’s a no-burn period/area then do not make a fire in the first place. . 2.) Clear the immediate area of dry foliage and leave a decent space between your fire and belongings/tents/etc. . 3.) If possible, keep a bucket of water on hand nearby in case of emergencies. . 4.) Don’t start or feed your fires with flammable liquid. . 5.) Simply be smart. Action shots are tough work! Just missed the eyes on the focus here but that’s quite representative of Mondays so here it is 👌 • So in the 2 years that we have had Chauncey, he has gone to the bathroom in the house twice with diarrhea (which I understand - when your tummy is sick you cannot hold that in and wait for your humans to come home). But Friday was different... We went for an evening hike and got home at 9:30PM. Chauncey had drank a ton of sea water (🙄🙄) so of course he was thirsty when we got home. He drank like a camel. At midnight he went for his night walk and then at 3am I awoke to him pacing a little. I figured he was just too hot because I was also too hot to go back to sleep. Then he goes into the kitchen and pees 🤦♀️ The poor guy had drank too much water and was stressed trying to wait to go outside and just couldn’t hold it. We have him in a bathroom schedule which helps to avoid most issues because his body is used to going to the bathroom at the same times every day. But now I’m thinking that it would be helpful to teach him a signal for when he needs to go outside of those scheduled times... like a bell on the door? Does anyone have experience with that? It would have really helped in this situation as he could have rang the bell and woken us up. ◖ I haven’t been completely focused on this app and you know..I can’t say I don’t hate it. I’m at a point where I can’t stand not making the improvements in my life that I want. I’m pissed. I’m pissed at myself for not doing this sooner. So, I’m doing it. . I’m tired of being tired and depressed and making excuses for things that are an easy switch if you just..do those things. ◖ This happy dog is ready for the weekend! And by weekend I mean ours because I’m always off Thursday-Saturday! Time for adventure! 🙌🏻 . While @kairosfordogs is wanting to hear stories of how CBD has improved your dogs life, I want to share mine. I’ve shared a lot about how it helps Riften, but I do use it for Quest, as well! . The biggest thing I need to work on most is Quest’s car anxiety/over-stimulation. For example, when I go to see @voyagewilder it’s typically anywhere from a 6-8 hour drive depending on traffic. If Quest doesn’t get CBD he STANDS, paces and heavily pants the entire time. It’s nonstop and I feel bad that he goes through that because that certainly isn’t comfortable. On better days he will lay down but he’s awake the whole time and still panting. . The last time I drove to see Mollie, I gave him his High Potency CBD right before getting into the car instead of in his breakfast that morning and it made all the difference! He laid down and slept the ENTIRE time; even in stop and go traffic! He’s usually so sensitive to my cars movements that once I brake or turn he’s up and panicking again. There’s something magical about early summer snows. I love to see the verdant greens collapsed from the white. New sprouts and flowers bowed over with its weight. ◖ This is where we would rather be on a Monday! 😴 . I wanted to take a second to bring home the importance of crate training your dogs. As some of you know, I work in a vet clinic’s boarding kennel and too often I have to cover run doors with a sheet in attempts to calm panicking dogs. I watch them hyperventilate all day unless I’m bringing them outside to play and potty every two hours. And I feel so bad because that’s not comfortable for them to panic that long. . Yesterday we had a dog who stood at their door and nervously barked literally my entire 10hr shift. And it happens all the time, especially for some dogs who stay for several days. Crate training is VITAL for dogs. It’s not just to give them a safe place to put them away when you’re gone at home, but it’s so they can still be comfortable when left in other kennels such as boarding/vets/daycare. So they can settle down and others can care for them. . ◖ The trip I took last weekend was my first time truly camping ever. As a kid, I only stayed in cabins, since my family’s favorite thing to say is their idea of camping is slow room service. And while I had so much fun on this trip with my favorite person, we realized we were not prepared for how our weekend would go. . First, we did not have nearly enough supplies. While we remained warm and fed regardless, we could’ve done way better and more efficiently. Next time I want to prepare better meals so we could actually eat/cook wholesome foods instead of junk. . When it came to some of our adventures, we were constantly having to improvise and we didn’t improvise well. Specifically, our one full day of hiking, we left completely dissatisfied, over-exhausted and a little regretful for even bothering to go out. Next time we’re going to heavily research our hikes instead of leaving it to the last minute and just picking the nearest one. We’ll wake up earlier and camp closer to the trail we actually want to take! . We simply needed to plan better and think smarter, but it gave us plenty of opportunities to learn so now our next trip will be better. It may not be perfect still, but it’ll be better! .
