Happy #waterfallwednesday ✌🏼 I’m not here to shame anyone on the trail, but this encounter we had really left me perplexed. We ran into a group of guys heading up the Upper Yosemite Falls trail when we were heading down, who were struggling. They had made it about a mile up the trail, were sitting down, and clearly having a hard time. They asked us how much further to the top. Now, I get it. If you’re not a hiker maybe mileage and elevation gain numbers don’t mean that much to you. Like if you’ve never done 3,000 feet of elevation gain in 3 miles before, you don’t know how challenging that really is. But are there actually people standing down in the valley and looking up at the top of Yosemite Falls and thinking, “Yeah, I’ll just walk up there real quick and check it out?” 🤌🏻 Like I have just now gotten myself to the point where I don’t have a self doubt fueled panic attack before a hike. This foal is not quite a day old, must have been born in the night. Truly amazing, look at the size of the foal. See last photo, the look of I’m Here. The horses are left pretty much to fend for themselves, the owners do look after, but leave them most of the time, gypsy’s horses. But as I say they do look after them, alway come if there is a problem. Just a natural birth, always worry if anything goes wrong as no one about, fortunately last few years never been a problem. Pleased to say Mother and baby fine, well as you can see. I watched them for hours, from a distance, took a few photos, 500mm lens, but these horses are use to people, but the young one don’t know humans yet. Our first Trout Fest event was a huge success. It exceeded our expectations with all the vendors who participated and the 250+ that attended and over 100 kids who got to participate in releasing almost 400 pounds of rainbow trout into the Kern River. Last year we went to Chicago, and my daughter and I absolutely fell in love, which is weird because I’m not a city person at all. As a geographer, cities fascinate me (I took college courses called shit like “the geography of cities”), and I always find the vibe and culture of different cities super interesting. But one to two days max, and I’m out because cities are very peopley, and I’m not very peopley. So anyway. On February April 12th, we celebrated our Luquillo-Sevilleta Virtual Symposium 10th anniversary. This year, we change the format a little bit to include a few inspirational talks from former students. We also added some space at the end to appreciate the teachers that have been participating in this symposium year after year with their students. We had a great turn out with about 100 participants watching the event and we can’t wait to repeat it again next year. Today marks a historic moment in Yellowstone National Park's legacy – the dedication of the iconic Roosevelt Arch by President Theodore Roosevelt himself! 🎉🌟 Located at @yellowstonenps's North Entrance in Gardiner, MT, the archway stands as a symbol of conservation and welcomes visitors from all over the world to explore America's first National Park. President Roosevelt was asked to lay the cornerstone of the arch on April 24, 1903. Did you know that the cornerstone covers a time capsule that reportedly contains a Bible, a picture of Roosevelt, Masonic documents, local newspapers, U.S. coins, and other items? Pretty neat! At the top of the arch the words "For the Benefit and Enjoyment of the People" are inscribed, which is a quote from the Organic Act of 1872, the legislation which created Yellowstone. Great news from @californiadfw we will be getting trout delivered this Saturday for our Kern River Trout Fest event. This is a great opportunity to bring your kids and let them have fun learning experience planting trout in the Kern River. Event starts at 10am this Saturday at Riverside Park in Kernville.
Photo dump part 2 Camped on a high ridge similar to the one in the first photo, we spent the morning watching a chipmunk forage in the juniper and flocks of trumpeter swans migrating north through the valley below us. Rough-legged hawks, sharp-shinned hawks and golden eagles swooped past, hunting the snow free hillsides. And as we were leaving camp a mother moose and her year old calf strolled across the ridge, disappearing in lot the woods. And just a few minutes after that, a bull caribou strolled by on the same path in the same direction as the moose. John and I were beaming with such love for this place we are fortunate to call home. Juniper was trembling, looking like she was going to have a heart attack from all the excitement, of having to sit still and quiet and suppress her chase instincts. Later in the day we spotted a few more mountain goats and had a spectacular day of bird watching. It was quite a day. I think we all passed out at 8pm. A few exciting bird sightings: 6 sandhill cranes, a pair of hooded mergansers (rare in the Yukon), a killdeer (southern Yukon is at the their tip of their northern range), a lone snow goose flying in the middle of a vee formation of a trumpeter swans and a lone long-tailed duck (one of my favourite birds). We saw almost 50 bird species that one day. Spring birding brings me so much joy but Juniper hates it. Every hour or so we have to put away the binoculars and go run around with the dog for a while. Relationships are about compromise after all. Side note: moose and caribou photos are from previous spring jaunts. Happy #trailtuesday! Indiana Dunes was a really unique experience. We hiked on dunes, boardwalks, and on the beach. We could see Chicago across Lake Michigan. It would get really hot, and then the wind would whip up off the lake, and it would get soooo cold. I don’t even know how many times we stripped off and added layers back on during this hike. By the end of the hike, the cold wind was pretty relentless, and we were ready to get inside, out of the wind, and get some food in our tummies. Pro tip: the pizza at Gelsosomo’s slaps! I was photographing a rabbit the other day, when suddenly he disappeared, I turned to look to see if someone was coming. I was amazed to see this little chap walking towards me. Trying not to move, but point camera at the Muntjac without giving my position away. He knew something was different and kept looking, suddenly she realised I was there and speed off.
