A little Saturday story about opening your heart & taking relational risks even when it feels awkward. This is Faera and they are wonderful! I met them, along with @goldenguy_alley at a valentine making event that I cohosted at @theprogramshop . I felt so drawn to these two (& their friend that was with them) but always want to respect boundaries, not imposing myself on people. After witnessing the 3 of them laughing & creating together & watching Faera skillfully vogue their way through the shop, I couldn’t resist approaching them to tell them that I saw beauty & belovedness in each of them. They were generous & joyful in response & we snapped a quick photo (photo 2). For weeks I have been thinking about Faera, wishing that I would have offered my contact info to them in case they ever needed a loving presence. Last night, at a @smartphoneorchestra event, I caught a glimpse of them in the mass of bodies & felt a tearful sense of joy & gratitude to the universe for the kismet of the moment. We met each other’s people, enjoining our families, widening circles of support. I love living in a big small town where magic like this can happen. I share this as encouragement to trust your gut &, with consent, offer words of blessing & love even when it feels awkward. We all need each other. A while back I got to walk thru a former printing press- specifically the tribune building in South Bend that a local church was preparing to transform into their new church home. This piece of newspaper I picked up off the floor has been in my office since, a lil reminder to pray for this redemptive community. I first experienced SBCC at the inaugural PEC gathering. I've described that experience as feeling like a cold glass of water in the wilderness. It's sparked hope and imagination for the future of the church and my experiences of the folks there were healing and redemptive. The work of revitalization they're up to is remarkable, their mantras as a church are grounded and subversive. Encompassed in the walls of that tribune space- are new dreams of telling new stories for their city. It's a gritty town with a history of challenges to overcome (you can ask @mallory.wyckoff about my personal run ins with the police there 🙃) The grit and tenacity of the church- to reimagine a more beautiful way of following Jesus and being loving presence to their city and in the world is breathtaking. Watching them pursue this dream, while prioritizing the how alongside the what has been inspiring. As they move into their new space, would you join me in praying for and cheering on our siblings at South Bend City Church? If you're not familiar, I highly recommend checking out the podcast. Had coffee with a local pastor yesterday, he's heading towards retirement and wants to serve with the Post Evangelical Collective, investing in pastors and reimagining the redemptive presence of the church with us. He's been innovating, expanding the paradigm, and extending the table for years. I've learned a lot from him, and he wants to dive in, invest, learn alongside and care for PEC pastors. Yesterday he said- I want to join your team not because I like you but because I believe the Spirit is at work in what you're doing. I mean you're great, but when you told me you were going to talk about neuroscience, psychology, and the physiology of healing at your gathering I knew I was IN 😂 (What a combo compliment?! Total nerd status and also deeply seen and appreciated.) I'm convinced these days that for us to be the redemptive presence of Christ in the world- to activate people to partner with Christ in the redemption and restoration of all things we have to learn how to navigate being activated, to expand our capacity for complexity and be able to live into tension with grace and love. I'm so pumped about the content for our national gathering here in Raleigh in April! We'll be diving into a wide variety of content, have a plethora of scholars, theologians, dreamers and schemers, and innovative practitioners. It's not too late to join us! This is the wall that runs along the border with Gaza. I stood at this wall in November 2016 with a Jewish peacemaker. She told us stories out of Gaza; the closest we could get. That night we called one of her friends in Gaza and we listened on the phone as she told us about her life. Gaza has been in my heart and in my consciousness since that time. I walk this earth holding all of these places and people that have marked my life. (Swipe 👉🏻) I placed my hand on the separation wall in the West Bank then. I prayed the wall would come down. Not in my wildest imagination did I think the wall of separation would come down in such a different way … in how the veil is lifted. The physical wall is still there, but the veil that hid Israel’s violent intent from the rest of the world is now lifted. There is no more hiding it. My heart is aching. When the people of Gaza thrive, we thrive. When the people of Liberia thrive, we thrive. When the people of Nunavut thrive, we thrive. We are not disconnected from each other. We are not disconnected from the violence we inflict on one another. My prayer is different now. I still pray for Peace. I pray for the kind of peace where the world is made right and beautiful, nothing missing, nothing broken. No-one missing. No-one broken. My prayer now is for immediacy: Holy One, stop the onslaught on the people of Palestine. Stop the violence. And my prayer is also a long one: Heal our violence, heal our pain, so we may stop doing these things to each other. Hear our prayer, O God. Hear our prayers.

Happy Valentine’s Day❤️Decided this throwback tie with @mayainspace was a good post for today. Valentines Day can be very isolating but community and care is not. I have never felt so cared for and welcomed as I did with Maya and her partner Ronnie. We laughed so much, I was swung around like a piñata, Ronnie took a shit ton of great pics(will post more later) and then we had some of the best small town sushi I’ve ever had. They were so personable and asked about my life and they really listened. I’m not very good with socializing but these new friends made it easy. I am always collecting remnants of nature - a feather, a cone, a lichen, a leaf. Is this my way of hoping to preserve a piece of something I can never own? Or is it my way of hoping to prolong the inevitable disappearance of the ones I love? I don't always know. I can feel everything I love slipping away, each moment, straddling the worlds of Here and Now, and future Grief. I seek to memorize their features before they’re gone. It’s also my way of bringing the outside in. These walls I live inside, surrounded by sidewalks and streets, remind me I am separate from the world that feels more real. The world of mosses and river songs, brush alive with birds, carpets of pine needles, filtered sunlight and swaying branches. Squatting by the river, I hold a miniature monolith in my hand, turning it over, covered in fossilized stories. I want to bring it home, but I ask first, “Would you like to come with me?” I hear nothing, but my hand carefully places it back in the water. Without words, I feel it wants to stay. As soon as I bring it home, it becomes less alive than it is right now, in this river.
