Excuse my meandering rant. I can still hear my dad shouting to stop acting like a girl after I got 'emotional' about their happy adoption news. I was in no way happy about that loss. My mother was angry that I was furious about what felt like a betrayal, how dare I question her claim to motherhood. Neither one of my parents was safe, and living in their home turned into Stockholm Syndrome. They were lousy at anger management. In every family photo, I am off to the side, and my mother barks at me to smile for the cameras like Joan Crawford in "Mommie Dearest." I was a hostage trapped o a cage. I found creative ways to sabotage them and myself. I would sneak my dad's whiskey to take the edge off and turn my anger inward. It makes me angry when adults say kids are resilient and overcome trauma. It doesn't magically happen.
