Poor, poor wildebeest...even with a mud mask and a spa day, they are just...not beautiful. Africans say that God made the wildebeest--also known as the gnu--last, using the leftover parts of other animals. They have the head of the warthog, the horns of the buffalo, the back of the hyena, the stripes of the zebra, the tail of the horse, and the beard of an old man. When I'm leading guests on a photo #safari, we always joke that these are "Budget Buffalo, made in China," and of course, any gnu joke goes, especially if it's a gnu joke that I haven't heard yet. Žijí s námi na chalupě Krutihlav obecný (Jynx torquilla) Po páteční návštěvě místní hospůdky jsem si chtěl přispat a tak jsem velmi nelibě snášel zvuky, které mne ráno budily. Až po chvíli mému spícímu mozku docvaklo, že na mne kousek za oknem volá krutihlav. Vyskočil jsem z postele, popadl foťák a hurá na zahradu. Bohužel neměl fotící náladu a od té chvíle se zatím neukázal. Několik let bydlel u souseda na zahradě a často nás navštěvoval, ale poslední dva roky nic. Tak snad letos to vyjde a zase se u nás usídlí. Throwback to my big international outdoor exhibition in 2007, 'Spirit of the Wild'. It was hosted in 17 city centers, each showing 100 pictures. When it was staged in Copenhagen, it attracted more than a million visitors. This picture was taken outside the Nobel Peace Centre in Oslo. Here, curator Stine Norden is giving a drink of water to her son August. The orangutans were photographed in Borneo and were published in my first book, 'In Praise of Primates' (1998). Some snow monkeys from the collection. Japanese macaques, known as snow monkeys, enjoy hot baths. They come down to the hot springs where they seek refuge from the bitterly cold winter weather. Despite the fact that the water reaches 80°C and the outside temperature can drop to -15°C, they leap between the freezing air and scalding water without injury. These were photographed between 1997 and 2003; and some appeared in my huge coffee table book, 'Untamed', published by Abrams books and Éditions de La Martinière in 2004. When I first saw Co Rentmeester’s extraordinary photographs of snow monkeys in Life Magazine in 1970, I knew I had to go there one day and discover them with my own camera and vision. Hier noch Teil 2 zu Wildtieren in Deutschland (und Frankreich). Bild 1 und 2: Rothirsche bei Berlin Bild 3: das Wildschwein, quasi das europäische Äquivalent zum Warzenschwein. Wer in Berlin in der Nähe eines Waldes lebt, sieht sie regelmäßig. Die Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe, Parks und Kleingartenkolonien kriegen die Krise, weil die knuffig-grunzenden Gesellen einfach alles umgraben, vom Grüngleis bis zum Gemüsebeet. @the_alpine_gypsy: this is the wild boar you wanted to see a picture of! 😊 Bild 4: Das Eichhörnchen. Dieses hier sammelte auf einem Berliner Friedhof noch ein paar Vorräte zusammen. Bei uns zuhause sitzt öfters eins auf dem Fensterbrett, klettert am Rauputz des Hauses herum oder klaut unsere Erdbeeren und Kirschen vom Balkon... Bild 5: Ein Storch - dieser hier ist aus dem Elsass. Aber auch am Bodensee haben wir viele beobachten und das typische Schnabelklappern vernehmen können. Bild 6: Der Teichfrosch stammt auch vom Bodensee, hoffentlich entkam er den Störchen... Bild 7: Hier bitte ich um Nachsicht - das Bild ist von 2004, mit meiner ersten Digitalkamera, die inzwischen von jedem Smartphone geschlagen wird 😜 Hoffe die Seehunde in der Nordsee sind trotzdem zu erkennen. Auf der Fahrt zu dieser Sandbank sah ich außerdem einen Delfin. Bild 8: Ok, das ist nicht ganz so wild, die Pfauen sind wie auch Fasane aus Asien eingeschleppt worden. Auf z.B. der Pfaueninsel in Berlin laufen sie allerdings frei herum. Außerdem einige honorable mentions: - ein Dachs, der auf Usedom plötzlich auf dem Weg saß (und genauso erschrocken guckte wie wir) - Füchse die ständig durch Berlin streifen, aber immer dann wenn ich keine Kamera mit hatte - Schlangen und Nattern, die sofort ins Gebüsch schießen - ein Otter - diverse Überreste von Biberaktivitäten - Waschbären, die mein Pabba in Berlin oft sieht, aber ich hab wild erst einen überfahrenen gesehen 😟 - etliche weitere Vögel, Igel, Mäuse, Käfer, Maulwürfe, Schmetterlinge, Fledermäuse... Es gibt so viele Tiere um uns rum. Beim Wildlife-Freiwilligenprojekt in Südafrika meinte jemand aus der Schweiz, dass es in Europa ja kaum nennenswerte Wildtiere gäbe. Nun ja, unser Wildlife ist vielleicht nicht so gefährlich oder so bunt oder so riesig wie in Afrika, aber wir haben definitiv viele Tiere, auch (oder sogar vor allem) nahe oder in besiedelten Gebieten. Darum schließe ich hier jetzt mit zwei Posts zu heimischen Tieren an die Bilder aus Afrika an. Die Fotos hab ich im Laufe der Jahre gemacht. 1: Schwanenküken, im Juni in einem Park in Frankfurt 2: Diese Libelle ist eine "gemeine Becherjunfer", Juni im Spreewald 3: Die Nutria (oder Biberratte) stopft sich in einem Tümpel im Elsass fröhlich die Entengrütze rein. Nutrias kommen als Neozoen aus Südamerika, pflanzen sich aber nicht so stark fort als dass sie eine Plage würden. 4: Das müsste ein Turmfalke sein. An Schnellstraßen und Autobahnen, wo häufig Tiere überfahren werden, sieht man oft kleinere Greifvögel und Falken am Rand auf Schildern, Zäunen und Pfosten sitzen. Wo ich den hier antraf, weiß ich leider nicht mehr. 5: Die weitverbreitete Mauereidechse, hier im Sommer auf einem Weinberg am Rhein. 6: Diesen Graureiher auf der Jagd haben wir an den Externsteinen im Teutoburger Wald gesehen. We had an amazing encounter with the Atlantic Puffin! These little seabirds are a wonder of nature. The Atlantic puffin, also known as the common puffin, is a unique seabird commonly found in the Atlantic Ocean. Found mainly in Iceland's Westman Islands, they measure 11-12 inches long with a wingspan of 19-25 inches. Their striking features include a black crown, light gray cheeks, and a white body. Their red and black beaks, along with orange legs, make them stand out. These puffins undergo a winter transformation at sea, losing some of their vibrant colors, but they regain their color in the spring. Both adult males and females look alike, with males being slightly larger. Was on the marsh today with the @nbconservancy regular volunteer crew removing invasive plants, aka weeding. While taking a water break I spied a large fuzzy fly land on the pickle weed near me. When I zoomed in to get a picture I noticed it was clutching another insect. The fly is a Robber Fly named Mallophora fautrix, aka a "Bee Killer". Its prey appears to be a Pepsis thisbe, aka a "Tarantula Hawk". A fly eating a wasp that eats spiders! Nature is metal.
