The African lion population has dropped an alarming 42% in just this century. This huge dip was mainly caused by illegal wildlife trade, human-wildlife conflict, and habitat loss. Left unchecked, scientists predict that the population will halve in the next two decades. Unfortunately, the plight of lions isnāt widely known. Help spread the word and support organizations such as @lionrecovery that are looking to preserve the king of the jungle. Camera traps are important tools to conduct many wildlife research. They are valued assets to our project team for their extensive use in understanding the movement pattern, observing biology of fishing cats which otherwise wouldn't have been possible. Sadly, camera traps are not always safe in fields. People enter the area to collect forest products, often engaging in activities that are deemed illegal inside the protected areas. The inadvertent capture of these camera traps, in fear of serving as a testament to their activities, are perceived as a threat and either taken or destroyed. #teraifishingcatproject #fishingcatconservationalliance #smallwildcats #wildnetorg #cameratrap #Fieldstories #wildliferesearch #challenge #mammals #fishingfelid #carnivores #koshitappu #Nepal

Why is there no mesh-wire fence in the coop? And what are the ducklings doing inside the mosquito net anyway? Predatory animals like Jackals, Jungle Cats, Fishing Cats are bigger concern in Koshi Tappu. They lurk around the human vicinity hunting poultry and livestock. People get intolerant of such animals, let alone conserving them. In worst cases, animals have to suffer retaliatory killings. To bridge some gaps in these conflicts, Terai Fishing Cat Project is currently piloting a program to help farmers build, repair and manage predator-proof chicken/duck coops. This intends to provide livelihood support to people, develop tolerance and promote a harmonious co-existence with animals in the area. By now, you must have understood, that this is one of the coops we recently helped build. The ducks were initially being kept covered by a mosquito net in a lack of proper housing. This farmer didn't want a mesh-wired fence in the coop because he believe stalking predators could easily scare them resulting in the death of animals. We comprehend the local understanding, and decided to try this one, with the flexibility to improve later if required. This is one of the many support programs we're starting this year and will attain a full-fledged status in the coming days. #teraifishingcatproject #fishingfelid #junglecat #goldenjackal #fishingcatconservationalliance #leofoundation #wildnetorg #smallwildcats #conflict #coexistence #sympatric #poultry #wetlands #carnivore #wildlife #Nepal #koshitappu

'The rarity of Koshi: Smooth-coated otter' On this World Otter Day, we're delighted to share some footage of smooth-coated otter from Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve. Otters are dwelling in the land of Koshi Tappu but there weren't sufficient evidence to tell so until last year, when our camera trap efforts for fishing cat made this unprecedented discovery. Since then, we've been monitoring the activities of otters alongside fishing cats in the region. With the display of curiosity and investigative nature of smooth-coated otter in this video, we wish everyone a very happy World Otter Day. #teraifishingcatproject #fishingcatconservationalliance #wildnetorg #smallwildcats #leofoundation #otter #ottersofinstagram #ottersofhimalayas #mustelidae #WorldOtterDay #coexistence #koshitappu #easternnepal #wildlife
Please watch until the end. I'm sure you will get surprised. The sound of birds and insects and fishing cat togetheršš The inextricable relationship of fishing cats with water bodies makes them unique among other felids. A cotton-top tamarin with her little baby on the back for the @wildlifewednesdaychallenge In German it is called #lisztaffe because the crest of white hair resembles the hairstyle of Hungarian composer Frank Liszt. As usual black brushpen and watercolor on some paper I do not know the brand of. Weirdly enough I could not get a good scan of it. The green and the black were just off and I did not want to manipulate the picture to much digitally. Because what is the point in working traditionally if you tweak it digitally to no end? So I took a photo with my phone and even if I only had bad lighting this came much truer to the original. Mountain Lion | Foothills of CO ā¢ ā¢ ā¢ At almost 5 years to the day, this opportunity to photograph a wild mountain lion was easily one of the most exhilarating times Iāve ever spent behind a camera. I was given the nod to document this cache site out on private property early one morning. The catch was we would need 4WD to get out there, as there was a little over a foot of freshly fallen snow on the ground. To top that off, it was at or slightly below zero degrees Fahrenheit. To prepare for that, we had to acclimate the camera gear to the cold before we got out there and that meant driving with the windows down. In all, we got maybe 10 minutes of time to take in this moment before she disappeared over the hillside and the sun rose.
Simba | Lion ā¢ ā¢ ā¢ Travel gives one the opportunities to immerse yourself. Swahili was never a language I thought I learn anything about. It was easy to pick up words along the drive as our guide and drivers were communicating species was pretty fun. Canāt wait to return.
The Take Down | Maasai Mara ā¢ ā¢ ā¢ The circle of life playing out before our eyes in the Mara. At night, we had lions chuffing outside out tent and somehow I slept right through it. The morning following our first night we crossed the river to see the wildebeest migrating in massive numbers. One lone lioness was on the hunt. We watched as she waited and watched before making her move for one of the younger wildebeests. To our dismay, she took the prey down across the river back up the bank outside of our tent.

#Repost @wildatheartkenya with @make_repost ć»ć»ć» This Grevyās zebra is one of only approximately 3,000 remaining of these extraordinary animals. The Grevyās Zebra Trust (GZT) engages local people to protect the last populations of Grevyās zebra and their habitat in northern Kenya, and their important work is rooted in local values, capacity and action. The Grevyās is quickly distinguishable from its plains and mountain zebra counterparts due to its charmingly large, round ears, and because it is tailor-made for the semi-arid climate where it lives. ...and then sometimes, conservation work also brings wonderfully rewarding news. While the loss of the lioness Naramat was tragic, her legacy will be lived on through her cubs: Yesterday evening we received reports from Lengaina that 3 lions were in the area he monitors. Toby, Francis and Jeremiah headed out there at sunset and were lucky to see the 3 lionesses (and 4 hyaenas!) It appears that the 3 females are Mararoi, Narasha and Masanduku - Naramatās oldest cubs! Typically here cubs disperse from their mothers (even females) between 1.5 to 2 years of age - and the 3 females are now almost 2. We canāt wait to see how they navigate the landscape without their mother Naramat - who continues to stay south of the Ewaso Nyiro River- many kilometres away. News via @ewasolions: āOn Wednesday 7th April, we lost our community lioness. Naramat. The Caring One. To us, her very existence was proof that coexistence between people and lions is possible. Naramat, was born in 2008 in Samburu National Reserve to Samburuās famed lioness - Nashipai. The Ewaso Lions team monitored her for years. She gave birth four times all on human occupied spaces, blazing a trail for lions successfully breeding in community lands. All the while, Naramat was carving a space for herself and her kin in the hearts of the community. People would inquire about her in the same way they would ask after children or cows. Even though she understandably caused anger when she preyed on livestock, her survival for 13 years was proof of tolerance, and proof that every step the team and community took to keep her and their livestock safe was worth it. Naramat succumbed to an attack. Not an attack by humans, but by a fellow lion. Humans ā the team, Kenya Wildlife Service, Conservancy teams ā are heroes. They struggled with every last muscle to save her. We can take comfort knowing that Naramat lived and died wild. She has left a legacy of lions including Naterenkwe and her cubs, as well as Mararoi, Narasha and Masanduku. She has left proof that coexistence is possible.ā š¤ RIP Naramat š
From raising the next generation, to taking a stand for wildlife, mothers around the world are having a huge impact on conservation. The Mama Simbas of @EwasoLions are local women in Samburu who engage other women in their community with conservation. Traditionally, these women are rarely included in conservation discussionsāyet their daily responsibilities put them in frequent contact with wildlife as the central users and managers of natural resources for their families. This program provides economic and education opportunities for the women, empowering both them and their children through conservation. It is these women and their efforts at the forefront of conservation working alongside @ewasolions who you will be supporting directly, when you purchase our Conservation Collection designs. Specially created for this purpose, this Collection gives back to those who work on the frontline of wildlife conservation. See our *new designs* via the link in our bio. Meanwhile, in Samburu...whatever time of year, northern Kenya always looks beautiful. However, sometimes all is not quite as it seems whether you work at the forefront of wildlife conservation, or youāre a threatened species trying to survive every day in this harsh landscape. Lions are a key species here, and monitoring their activities and movements - especially in remote areas inhabited by people too - is vital to increasing our understanding about coexistence, and helps prevent lions being killed in retaliation for attacks on livestock š¦ āWe were waiting. We hadnāt seen them in 9 months and didnāt know if they were all alive. Life is hard for them. We were parked at a distance to give this one year-old cub space as she walked through the long grass. She emerged - walking through the grass towards us at sunrise. We stared, stunned in to silence and in awe. This one is part of Naramatās fourth litter ā a lion we have known since she was born. She has lived her whole life navigating human occupied spaces ā a master of stealth even now. And this moment at sunrise is one we will never forget.ā To learn more about lions living outside protected areas within community landscapes, follow @ewasolions Via @beyondboundarieske The @wildatheartkenya beaded collars and belts are made by semi-nomadic pastoralist women in remote areas of Kenya. Nothing inspires us more than mother nature and the outside world. It keeps us healthy physically and mentally, recharging our souls and ultimately giving us the ability to survive on this planet. From the reduction of carbon fuels to preserving biodiversity, the events of 2020 elevated our desire to take action. While #Africa is filled with #zebras, few of them are Grevy's. Dry northern #Kenya is home to the unique #Grevyszebra ādistinctive by their larger size and round Mickey Mouse ears. Grevy's zebra are very rare, with just over 3,000 remaining. With drought always just a whisper away, an increased search for water has amplified mortality rates, in turn leading to a dwindling population size. @grevyszebratrust engages local people to protect the remaining Grevyās zebra and their habitat. Their work is rooted in local values, capacity, and action. š¦ - 40% of the entire Grevy's zebra population is monitored by Grevy's Zebra Scouts. #wildnetorg #grevyszebratrust #grevyszebra #kenya #africa #worldwomenwork #savingspecies #endangeredspecies #conservation #global #empoweringwomen #wildlifeconservation
