Day 6 -- and it's Friday! Breakfast at the hotel is always a great way to start the day. We then visited Proyecto Tití and hiked and enjoyed lunch with the locals and helped plant local vegetation. Twins have made their debut in our study groups located in Colosó and in the Los Tities de San Juan Forest Reserve. While we eagerly await the births in our Ceibal groups, it's fascinating to note that cotton-top tamarins typically have their little ones once a year, with the majority being born between April and August. 💧🌧🐒April usually marks the start of Colombia's rainy season, but this year it's a tad behind schedule. Despite the delay in rainfall, we're optimistic and hoping for it to arrive soon. The newborns will begin requesting food from their caregivers within 2 months, and by 4 months, they'll be fully weaned. 🐒💚With April's rains initiating the fruiting season, followed by subsequent months bringing more rain, there'll be an abundance of fruiting trees by the time the infants are ready for solid food. It was such a unique adventure to explore this area with our Guests and learn how the Proyeco Tití teams track and monitor the families of monkeys! ⬆️LINK INNBIO⬆️ #TamarAnneTuesday 🌳🐵🐵🌳TamarANNE Tuesday: Cotton-top Tamarin Genetics 🥰😇🐵I’m so excited to share some exciting new results regarding cotton-top tamarin genetic diversity. In collaboration with our partners from the University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen Zoo, and University of Antioquia we have published a new paper that compares the genetic diversity of cotton-top tamarins living in the forests of Colombia today with museum specimens found before 1960’s. The data suggest that there are two populations of cotton-tops tamarins that were separated by mountain ranges of the Paramillo Massif in Colombia. Although these two distinct populations still exist today, we have observed genomic signals consistent with recent inbreeding, particularly in the northeast population. This loss is likely due to the population reduction following the mass exportation of cotton-top tamarins to the US in the 1960’s coupled with the continued habitat loss that the population faces today. Interestingly, when comparing the genetic load between samples collected from museum specimens and wild tamarins found in the forests of Colombia today, our data suggest that cotton-top tamarins appear to have avoid overall increases in harmful mutations in their genomes, as has been observed in other species. In addition, using this data can potentially help determine the geographic origin of illegally trafficked cotton-top tamarins. It truly felt like coming home! Reconnecting with old friends and witnessing the remarkable development of this community over the years left me in awe. The transformation in Colosó is nothing short of amazing! The once dusty streets are now paved, and a beautiful park graces the town center plaza. The Casa de Cultura features a lovely tribute to cotton-top tamarins and recognizes Colosó as the birthplace of Proyecto Tití. Amazing recognition of how important cotton-tops are to this community! What a beautiful forest! I have been incredibly fortunate to wander through the lush forests of Colosó in search of cotton-top tamarins. Sitting on large rocks in the arroyo, patiently waiting for the monkeys to awaken from their afternoon slumber, has always been a tranquil experience. This place holds a special spot in my heart, and it never ceases to amaze me. Stepping foot into the forest once again, I was immediately greeted by the symphony of birdsong and the earthy scent that lingers after a night's rainfall. With bated breath, I awaited the presence of the cotton-tops. And there they were, high up in the trees, tiny heads of the infants born just a few months ago, peeking over the shoulders of their caregivers! Witnessing this sight fills me with hope for the future, every single time. But this time, something was different—I had the privilege of sharing this precious moment with visitors who had come to explore the forest. Colosó has blossomed into a prominent nature tourism destination in the region. Its flourishing ecotourism industry attracts visitors from neighboring communities all eager to experience the sheer magic of nature.Not only can these visitors witness the incredible wildlife that calls this forest home, but they can also venture to Salto Serrano, a breathtaking waterfall where the symphony of cascading water serenades the senses. 🐒🌿 Celebrating the Milestones of Cotton-Top Tamarin Infants! 🎉💕 Our adorable cotton-top tamarin infants that were born in April and early May are keeping their families very busy! It's amazing to see how much they've grown and developed. This year 6 of the 8 groups we are studying gave birth in April-May which falls within the annual birthing season of April-August. As expected, moms gave birth to twins and this year, we had one group of triplets. Sadly, Isamira wasn’t able to produce enough milk to care for three infants, but she has two thriving babies that are starting to become very active. At just one month old, cotton-top tamarin infants have achieved some remarkable milestones. They are starting to explore the world around them, gaining more strength in their tiny limbs, and developing their own unique personalities. They are so brave as they start to take their first steps away from their caregivers. It is so cute to watch them have their feet on a branch as they try to figure out what it is while still clinging to their caregiver. This is also the time when infants start paying attention to what everyone is eating. Infants learn what to eat by adults sharing food with infants. Adults give a loud chirp when they have food in their hands and the infants perk up and might even try to sample a bite! Now comes the difficult part for the infants. These next few months are the most dangerous for them as the learn to become independent. They need to be extra careful not to fall when learning to navigate through the trees and their family will be extra alert for predators as the infants gain independence. If these infants survive to 6 months of age, they will have a 90% chance of making it to adulthood. We will be keeping our fingers crossed that these 12 little miracles will be bringing their families and us a lot of joy in the months to come as we watch their antics in the forest. #Cotton-topTamarinInfants #Nature'sMiracles #ProyectoTiti

AMENAZAS A LA SUPERVIVENCIA DEL TITÍ CABECIBLANCO Los titíes cabeciblancos habitan únicamente en el Caribe colombiano, en el bosque seco tropical. Hoy en día, la mayor amenaza para la supervivencia del tití cabeciblanco es la deforestación de su hábitat, el bosque tropical, debido a prácticas llevadas a cabo de manera inadecuada como: la agricultura, la minería, la tala ilegal y la expansión urbana. La destrucción del hábitat del tití cabeciblanco, continúa aumentado a un ritmo alarmante. Del año 2013 al 2018, el 98% de la pérdida de cobertura arbórea en Colombia ocurrió dentro de los bosques, lo que ocasionó una disminución del 5% en los bosques desde el año 2000 (Global Forest Watch, 2019). La mayor pérdida de cobertura arbórea ocurrió en los departamentos de Atlántico y Bolívar, uno de los bosques más vulnerables donde habita el tití cabeciblanco. 🐦🌳🐵 #TamarANNEtuesday We had an incredible Global Big Day at Los Tities Forest Reserve in San Juan Nepomuceno, Colombia, and I am thrilled to share the amazing results with you all! A whopping 95 bird species were observed during this event, showcasing the extraordinary biodiversity of this stunning natural habitat. From colorful black-tailed trogon (Trogon melanurus) to majestic Black hawk eagle (Spizaetus tyrannus), every corner of the forest was buzzing with avian life! But that's not all! Did you know that birds and cotton-top tamarins share a common love for certain fruit species? It's fascinating to witness the interconnectedness of nature. As birds were spotted in the trees, we couldn't help but notice how they fed on some of the same fruits as cotton-top tamarins. There was the beautiful Buff throated Saltator (Saltator maximus) and the Carib Grackle (Quiscalus lugubris) feeding on a fruit called “Manjack” (Cordia collococca) and the Tropical Kingbird (Tyrannus melancholicus) feeding on “patica paloma” (Stylogyne turbacensis). These observations remind us of the delicate balance and interdependencies within ecosystems. By protecting the forest and its inhabitants, we not only preserve the beauty of these birds but also ensure a sustainable future for cotton-top tamarins. A heartfelt thank you to all the birdwatchers, conservationists, and volunteers who made this Global Big Day a resounding success. Happy International Migratory Bird Day! 🐦🌍 Today we celebrate the amazing journeys that migratory birds take every year, traveling thousands of miles between breeding and wintering grounds. Did you know that Colombia is home to over 1,900 bird species, including many migratory birds that visit the country each year? One of the most iconic migratory birds in Colombia is the Cerulean Warbler (Setophaga cerulea). This small, blue-gray bird travels from its breeding grounds in North America to spend the winter in the forests of Colombia and other parts of South America. But habitat loss and other threats are putting this species and others like it in danger. That's why it's so important to protect the habitats that migratory birds rely on, both in their breeding and wintering grounds. Los Titíes Forest Reserve is not only home to cotton-top tamarins, but it is an important stop over site for many migratory birds. By conserving forests, wetlands, and other key habitats, we can help ensure that migratory birds like the Cerulean Warbler have a safe place to rest and refuel during their incredible journeys.
