Double-edged day… 🏔️ We had an equally incredible and torturing experience yesterday. Franconia Ridge was our first March WMNF hike, here are the details: The trail .. ..was very comparable to sand, but unlike the texture of a beach, the snow was slippery and mushy. ..was extremely challenging; this hike felt 10x harder than usual because each step took much more effort. ..was a mess. I cannot and do not want to count how many times we fell on the way down. The only saving grace was being able to slide a half-mile down the falling waters trail. ..over the ridge, exposed rock with water trickling over, as well as the varying snow cover was complicated to navigate. The views .. .. were incredible! The day started out cloudy and somewhat ominous. Once we reached the opening on the Old Bridle Path looking to the Ridge there was a clear division between the clouds and clear skies, with the wind pushing them east. .. opened up by the time we reached the summit and all the neighboring and distant peaks were visible! The Journey .. .. was empowering. Our strength, mentally, physically and spiritually, was tested during this hike. But the challenge changed us for the better. .. was less about the act of bagging peaks and working on lists, and more about digging deep within ourselves to find humility and fortitude. Yesterday we hiked up Mount Carrigain for the February version. Temps were more like early April. Someone bushwhacked a route from the parking area to the December washout on Sawyer River road. We climbed up to the road near that point and then continued to the actual hike up the signal ridge trail. We couldn’t get over how warm it was. We did need to switch to snowshoes as everything turned so soft and we began postholing. Besides our group of 4, we only saw 5 others all day. Super quiet! Again we had fun with the Rocky talkies communicating with our tramily over on the Tripyramids. Finally back in the White Mountains for a New Year’s Eve hike up North and Middle Tripyramids. This makes 32/48 Winter NH 4000 footers. An absolute bluebird day as the pup and I conquered Liberty and Flume. With the string of rainy and cloudy days it was nice to see the sun pop out. This photo pretty much sums up my day. See how I am not standing next to the summit sign? It's because I crawled. Not because I was in pain - it was because it was too dang windy. Legit like 40 sustained - 50 mph on the top of Saddleback. I lost my #lovemaineadventures hat - it took flight. (On that note, if you find it, shoot me a message!) It was a crazy awesome day on the mountain with a fantastic crew. See my smile? It's pure bliss. There's nothing like pushing through the challenge to make it to the summit with some pretty amazing people. You can do anything you put your mind to if you prepare, plan, and persevere. The summit of Canon after a long and difficult winter ascent, breaking trail in many feet of snow. The trail was beautiful and straight forward, until we reached the steep section just before the summit. The effort that it took to ascend that last half mile was enormous and a new challenger for me. The good thing was I learned how to properly use my ice axe going up and even more so on the descent. We had to sled on our butts down most of the trail, using our axes as brakes. And creeping down the icy rock faces with my axe was a first. It was scary and frustrating at times, but we made it! Never be afraid to push yourself and go outside of your comfort zone. You will almost always be rewarded.
