Medal Monday: Glass City Marathon. Ran this as a training long run for Eagle Up. We drank all the drinks 🍻 (margaritas, mimosas, beer), ate all the treats 🌯 (breakfast quesadillas, PB&j, apple sauce, gummy bears), found all the dogs 🐶 (counted 50ish, petted 1) and got a rainy long run in. #glasscitymarathon #marathon #ultratraining

Loved yesterday. Amazing atmosphere and a very runnable route. Pacing is fun and rewarding; seeing the effort people make to reach their goals - and often achieving them is brilliant and I’m here for it! As an aside, 2:15 was very comfortable. I won’t be racing a half until the @cardiffhalf in October but we’ll see. Can the PB of 1:56 from 2019 be threatened? Still on a high from yesterday I’ve spent so much of my life in shame… I still beat myself up about who I used to be. I’ve felt genuine pride for myself a handful of times in my life and finishing 50 miles is something that makes me feel very proud. I never once thought of quitting but I certainly looped the phrase “this is hard” over and over again on that 7.7 miles loop. Sally McRae, a world class ultramarathoner and role model of mine said it best, “the truth is, getting strong hurts.” I’m getting stronger physically and mentally as I continue to grow. Yesterday, a dream of mine came true… but it didn’t just come to fruition. I made this happen through months of practice and what feels like a lifetime of resilience training. When I accomplish these big things I immediately think of and am grateful for all the people who made it possible. My parents are ALWAYS supporting my crazy dreams and made me the person I am today. My wife drove 3 hours in the middle of the night to get us there and then crewed and even paced me. We’ve sacrificed a lot of quality time just so I could train. Even my work partners had to listen to our noisy treadmill and even cared for my dog while working so I could run for 3/4 hours at time. My sister texted and followed all day and my in-laws encouraged me for over 10 hours while they’re on vacation. Hello MONDAY🧡Hello NEW WEEK🧡…schön, dass du da bist! Ich bin gespannt was mich diese Woche erwartet… Eine abwechslungsreiche und sehr intensive Trainingswoche mit rund 95 Trainingskilometern und 3380 Höhenmetern, viel Krafttraining und Dehnen liegt hinter mir🔥💪🏻. Weiter geht’s mit Trainingswoche 10/16 für den 106 km/5000 Hm Ultratrail rund um die Zugspitze(ZUT), die ich für mich etwas angepasst habe! Am Wochenende möchte ich zur Vorbereitung einen weiteren Trainings-Ultra laufen. Dieses Mal geht‘s nach Innsbruck zum @innsbruckalpine ⛰️🏃‍♀️. Am Donnerstag geht’s bereits los! Bis dahin werde ich es mit zwei Läufen ruhig angehen lassen. Somit startet die Woche für mich erstmal ganz entspannt🙌🏻. Die harte Arbeit folgt am Wochenende! I hit the gym as soon as I dropped the kids off at school this morning. The rain and wind were relentless over the weekend, and today we have scattered thunderstorms, so I opted for another day of sweaty cardio indoors. Saturday afternoon’s Yorkshire 3 Peaks Run (cut back to 2 peaks & 24.8mile + 4070ft) with Madz, who was loving it! We were on for my best 3Peaks run time after Pen-Y-Ghent & summiting Whernside, but a freezing cold artic wind chilled my legs & in pushing too hard descending the steep sections down to the bottom of Whernside my right achilles / calf suddenly became really painful to the point where running uphill was no longer an option & downhill was worse 🤣. Got to the foot of Ingleborough (final peak) & took the frustrating but totally right call not to continue over it, but to hobble-run the 7miles back on the flat road…not fun. 1st rain stop play in donkeys yrs so guess I was due one!. Made it back just as it got dark. Next day leg was not bad just heavy bruising (prob’s impact damage) Great day out though, big shout out to Moo, she is such a fab trail partner & nice for her to tick off some more mountain peaks, (built her up to these distances). Två trötta själar bampade runt i Sofieroskogen 🥰 Efter två nätter med dålig sömn på grund av restlessleg jublade denna kroppen när sonen deklarerade att han var lite trött och kunde tänka sig en kort runda, sofierovarvet lite sisådär 4 isch km var hans plan, då jag vet att den blir ojämnt nära 5 km så la jag till lite så vi fick en snyggare 5:a istället 👀 Väl hemma så tänkte huvudet stryka, städa, laga mat, medans kroppen sa kaffe i uterummet? Verttii! Vuoden alkuun tuli vierailtua harvakseltaan mäessä. Yleensä loivia rinteitä ja pidempään. Nyt on vähän jo jyrkempääkin tunkattu ja viikottain useammankin kerran. Huomiona, että vaikka alamäkeen pystyy aika kivasti juoksemaan niin loivaa kuin jyrkkääkin, väsyy jalat jo ennen tonnia. Lihakset on myös muutaman päivän, jos ei kipeitä, niin ainakin jäykät. Ylämäkeen vauhti taas on hidasta vielä. Loivassa sitä ei niin huomaa mutta Jättärin Fasaanirinteessä ei meinaa päästä eteenpäin. Paljon on duunia siis kesällä tehtävänä kun kisassa pitäs sujutella 27000m ylös ja vähän enemmän vielä alas. Alamäkikesto on tärkein, jotta lihaksisto ei ole moksiskaan kisassa. Vauhti varmasti riittää. 🏃‍♀️ If you love racing but don’t feel inspired by your training, you’re doing it wrong. 🧠 Research shows that motivation based on the process (training) is more sustainable than motivation based on outcomes (like racing, results). Double run day as I start to try and get some fitness back after waaaaay too long being ill. Filling breakfast And it’s high protein at 30g Win win! I’m sure you have heard it skipping breakfast is the worst thing you can do to your body. especially if you’re looking to see a change in your body such as weight loss and muscle growth, let me explain why! And before you come at me saying that you’re just not hungry in the morning I bet it’s because one of the reasons I’m gonna explain! Why is having a high protein filling breakfast? So important to achieving results? well, when it comes to our body, I didn’t know if you know this, but it needs food to function properly. Your body needs nutrition to be able to burn fat and see muscle growth. Your body needs nutrition to be able to function throughout the day. So when we wake up in the morning and we don’t nourish our body, our bodies going to look for fuel somewhere else and it’s going to get nervous that it’s going to be starved so it’s going to go into starvation mode. where whatever you put into it later on throughout the day it’s going to hold as body fat because it’s afraid that you’re not going to nourish it!🤔 When one skips breakfast I bet you typically see that you’re starving towards 2 PM, 3 PM, 4 PM and you’re looking for easy grab and go snacks probably something that is filled with refined sugar and simple carbs because your body knows it can pull energy from that. You’re most likely eating later in the evening because your body is hungry it’s been moving all day and it didn’t get that nourishing breakfast it needed. All these things tend to be filled with higher calorie foods that are not full of dense nutrition, and worst of all we’re most likely going to overconsume on these items later in the day, because we are so hungry, which can lead to weight gain and decreasing muscle mass. Now here’s the other ringer because you’re eating these foods later in the evening because your body is starving. It doesn’t have the proper time to digest overnight because your insulin is high because of the foods that you were consuming so you’re not going to be waking up hungry so you’re in this harsh cycle unfortunately. Sunday, Runday! 20 miles on a new rec path with Rocky Mountain Road Runners. RMRR had an organized spring race training run. They set up aid stations with water, hydration, and gels. It was a great run! It is always fun to run somewhere new. Since it’s medal Monday and the fact I couldn’t be bothered to post this yesterday…I ran and finished Montane Howgills Trail Marathon 😊 Highly recommend! The race starts in Sedbergh and heads out around some of the hills and valleys of the Yorkshire Dales. Absolutely beautiful scenery and a lovely day out 😁 Exactly what was needed as a warm up to some bigger running events this year 😅 Chatted my way around it (that will come as no surprise to some 😂) and had a lovely time 😁 Always good to help make sure a pal beats some previous DNF demons too! We took it very easy and ended with a “sprint” finish 😂 The weather stayed dry, but very cold for most of it and it did set the neuro issues off for a while. Lots of the route was still streams and bogs, but that’s all part of the fun isn’t it! My day also started with getting a lamb off the main road and back into a field at about 5am! Always an adventure and new stories to tell 😂 Also carried a full bag of skittles around in my pack, BUT I did pretty well eating my other snacks so happy with that 😊

Dit weekend met 13 leden van de TTOutdoor Trail groep naar de Vogezen afgereisd voor de het deelnemen aan de Trail du Grand Ballon over diverse afstanden. Zondag om 11.00 uur gestart voor de 26 km - met Arjen, Carola, Evert, Marian, Sabrina - waar ik het nu gelukkig wel direct doorliep na de start. Was ook wel nodig met de kou en lichte miezerige regen. Vandaag iets meer comfortabele trail schoenen aangedaan i.v.m. de linker enkel. Om 10.00 uur was de start van de 34 km met Annemarie (ging voor de 26 km), Bas, Brigitte, Marja en Reint. Na een paar honderd met langs de parkeerplaats, mochten we gaan dalen... zo'n 800 mtr over lengte van 8 km. Ondanks het frisse weer, maar door het het bos viel de wind reuze mee ...dus de handschoenen, armstukken en beanie gingen weer uit. Op sommige stukken was het oppassen, om niet te veel uit te glijden....op deze schoenen. Beneden aangekomen stonden Geert-Jan, Henk en Richard ons al op te wachten. Even kort bijpraten en door. Na een kort klimmetje en dalen, was het vanaf de 10e km weer stijgen over 800 mtr over een lengte van 10 km. Onderweg nog 2 wilde zwijnen voorbij zien stuiven. Op 14 km stonden de 3 heren ons weer op te wachten bij de verzorgingspost. Even een colaatje en cake, voordat we door gingen. Waarbij er enkele lange steile stukken zaten Eenmaal boven stond er een frisse koude wind en was alles dichtgetrokken. Nog een passage door sneeuw en ijswater. Nog wat glooiend terrein tot dat de finish locatie weer in beeld kwam. En dan weer de trap omhoog. Maar goed de finish werd weer behaald....en vanaf het koude weer, er verstandig aangedaan om geen 34, maar 26 km te doen. Peak week ✅   The theme of this training block has been flexibility.   I’ve only had two long runs go according to plan over the past 2 months.   Between travel, weather, and just feeling worse than expected, most weekends have felt like a scramble to get in the miles.   But that’s part of running. While it never gets easier, really – at least you get better at expecting it.   It’s so easy to get wrapped up in hitting your miles, pacing, and training… that you lose sight of the bigger picture.   In 2005, I joined my middle school track team because I wanted one of the windbreaker jackets. I remember the first time we went for a long run around town – I was terrified. As someone who had never run further than a mile at once, I had no idea how I’d make it out there for 6 whole miles. (Spoiler alert: I was fine, but it wasn’t until 7 years later that I ran that far again.) 😂   Last year was my first big build up since my foot injury in 2014 and I can’t help but notice how much easier this one has felt, despite all of the logistical challenges. Starting the taper… Keeping the intensity, reducing the duration/distances. Checking, rechecking and triple checking my kit against the mandatory kit list. GBSCOT50 W11 D1 - 6mi Recovery Run with Gruber If I thought my legs were feeling weary over the past couple of days, they're officially waving the white flag now! Thank goodness this week is a de-load week on my training plan. I always say it, but this time I'm really going to make a concerted effort to stick to the lower mileage, especially considering the hefty numbers lined up for the following week. This morning's run served a dual purpose: a recovery leg stretch for me and an hour-long jaunt for the dog. Lately, he hasn't been too enthused about joining me on my shorter runs. However, this morning, he was practically bouncing off the walls with excitement as I got ready, so on went his harness, and off we trotted. After yesterday's recce run, it felt good to be back on familiar trails where I could switch off and let the hour tick by. April miles: 162 Feeling great about my double 20s over the weekend and with one long run effort left until race day coming up, I am proud of this training cycle. Despite my changing body… hormones, composition, aging…I am still out here improving and becoming fitter. I always believed being fit looked a certain way until I learned that isn’t true. Though the interest in this sport is fairly low in my circle, here is where I find people that get it. The training cycle I chose was for a 50 mile run in which one week is high and one low. It’s a bit different than the two week progression and a deload week. I loved it because when I have a hard week, the next week I can still maintain fitness but also recover well going into the next hard week. I’ve even had days I skipped or split long runs to fit my every day schedule. Before starting this training cycle I never imagined running back to back long runs. I would be done after one 18 mile run in my marathon plan. I thought it might be silly to jump from 50k to the 100k goal in a year, but I have seen people progress quickly and wanted to challenge myself. I have taking a love for this sport. Some tips from my experience to stay injury free: 1: Eat enough. If you don’t know how hire a dietitian like @the.endurance.nutritionist 2: Sleep 3: Take rest days. Extra ones if you need to. Listen to your Body 4: Include protein in your runs 3+ hrs 5: Fuel your runs & practice taking in higher carbs in your longer runs. ( Some people don’t need to but if you feel shitty after you probably should) 6: Strength training isn’t as big of a deal IMO. Sure you should do some but keep it specific to running. If you feel beat after a session and can’t do your runs it’s not helping your running. I love heavy resistance bands for my legs, hips and glutes. 7: Dynamic stretching and mobility a little each day 8: Don’t run in the same shoe every day. Try different styles for different runs. 9: Hydrate. Sodium is your friend here. Do a self sweat test. You may want to also do a sodium test. I never did I just played with the intake. 10: Mindset. Mindset. Mindset BELIEVE in yourself. Let’s do it ❤️

Race recap time!! Saturday was the marathon I've been low-key training for. It was a smaller race on an EXTREMELY BORING course. 4 out and backs. But, that's what I was going for, because it's been 5 years since my last official road marathon. It was cold all week. Winter leggings, frost, multiple layers for recess at school🙄. Race day? HOT. 70s, humid, and extremely windy (25-30mph). Not much I could do to prepare for that, other than accept the fact that my goal time would likely not happen. I decided to treat it more as a training run for an upcoming timed loop race in June. Race day I felt fantastic. I was sure to load up on salt beforehand and during. I used ucan gels, salt tabs, and relied on aid stations for hydration, which probably wasn't enough, but I didn't want to carry my pack. I think I need to look into a handheld for road races. I got warm quick, and the headwind was brutal. But, my place was good for the first half, around 8:30. I decided that maybe a half marathon was good enough😂. But, my family wasn't there yet, so I went around the bend for lap 3, and saw them at the start at mile 20. I was beyond done by then, but my 7 year old ran with me for a bit, which was just the boost I needed for the last 6 miles, which sucked. A lot. 😂 I did not use intervals, but I'm thinking maybe I should have for some of it, because my walking breaks were frequent during the last 10 miles. BUT. I finished sub 4! 3:56, and 2nd female. that's an hour and 15 minute PR from my last official road marathon, and 40 min PR from my own previous record. Moral of the story- don't. Give. Up. Ever. I also think I need a coach, because a BQ in the fall somewhat seems within reach. And that's something I never thought I'd say. Thanks for reading if you got this far 😂

A steady run for me after London last weekend too, but super happy with that time, crept in under 3:40 by a few seconds after a sprint finish to chase the time down! With less than 2 weeks out from UTS50 and peak training done, I can’t help but look back to where I was a year ago when facing the same race. I’d just won the Highland Ultra and was feeling as strong and fit as I was when I did the MDS 2 years earlier. Whilst UTS last year was a slog of a day due to it being only two weeks after HU and my body had a lot of fatigue it in, I got it done and didn’t die even though it felt like I was at times 😂 Things went rapidly downhill after that with 7 months of no running due to a stress fracture that wouldn’t go away.. plus with losing my dad, going through separation and house move all in the mix, running has been at the bottom of the pile. There have been many days when I didn’t want to even get out of bed. I’ve been on a steady rehab plan since January, thanks to my brilliant coach @zone2coaching and my very patient physio @shires_physio the main objective was always to get me to this point without a relapse - I can’t thank them enough. We’ve taken a very different approach this time, and future training will very much be different to how it was pre injury .. also due to being peri menopausal and my body does weird shit now. So here I am once again facing UTS50 just around the corner and I couldn’t feel any different to a year ago. Confidence has taken a huge knock and imposter syndrome is basically who I am now 🫠 BUT, life happens. Sometimes we get knocked down, several times in this case, but we also keep getting back up, each time with more tenacity, determination and drive. Looking forward to towing the start line and being back in Eyri again. It will be exactly a year since I last did a race, I have no expectation other than to complete it. Throw back today, to my 50km ultra in Madeira. After running 19 miles yesterday it made me think about my first ultra and how I even managed it. It’s crazy how you can build up all that fitness and then within a few months it’s gone. Building back up again now but who knows how I’m going to achieve 63 miles (100km) race in July… it feels so unachievable at the moment. Eerlijk gezegd kende ik de Utrechtse Heuvelrug vooral van toen ik vroeger als puberkind ontzettend liep te balen van dat ik weer mee ‘moest’ wandelen met mijn ouders. De Amerongse Berg was een onneembare veste, na een paar km leek iedere boom op elkaar en kon ik het vrolijke geklets van mijn ouders niet meer horen. Gisteren liep ik bijna 32 km over deze old stomping grounds, in een iets hoger tempo dan toen. Hop, de Amerongse Berg op, genietend van bos, heide, zand, verdwalend en de weg terugvindend. Paadjes kiezend en er nog heel veel overslaand. En het geklets van mijn ouders?
