The Northern Lights were briefly visible at the summit again last night but were not nearly as vivid as they were on Friday night due to a weaker solar storm. However, that didn't stop the summit staff from taking advantage of the rare phenomenon and perfect weather by capturing more pictures of them and the stars. Although solar activity remains high, the solar storm that provided the otherworldly light shows this weekend is finally beginning to subside, gradually decreasing the odds of seeing them over the next few nights. “Go with the flow. No, I gotta get out of the flow. Well then get out. I’m in the flow that’s what got me here. I’m 26 years old I got nothing to show. You’re young you’re so young.” I am very happy to once again spend my birthday on the top of New England! My plan was to hike Mount Adams but the weather said in & out of the clouds which meant no guarantee of clear views so I did Mount Washington via the cog! I was surprised to be the first car to arrive on a Saturday after 6am. There’s only a little bit of snow left. I had the summit to myself for an hour before auto road drivers showed up. The views were slowly disappearing on my way back so I timed it just right. I passed by a pink and blue train which at this time of year trains only layover on the summit for 30 minutes until Memorial Day weekend, plus the buildings are still closed. I heard the same train coming behind me so I decided to race it back to the station and I beat it to it! It means so much to me that these mountains will always be here for me! When the summit staff walked outside after sunset, they were greeted by a fantastic light show. The biggest solar storm in almost 20 years resulted in the northern lights dancing directly over the summit Friday night, so weather observer Charlie Peachey grabbed his camera before going outside to capture the special event. I wanted to make the most of this gorgeous day here in the Presi’s! I started at 4:30am up the cog and when I got to Gulfside, I made my way over to Mount Madison. There was lots of on & off snow including the Jefferson snowfield and a half mile from Mount Adams but at least there’s a lot less snow now than there was last year.The winds were high all day which keeps the bugs away. The huts are still closed until June. After I summited Madison I thought about taking Star Lake to Mount Adams but I didn’t want to risk running into steep snow so I went up Airline. It was easier to walk on the snow coming back because the ice turned to slush. I then reached Mount Jefferson which was no surprise that I was alone because it’s at least a 5 mile mountain when Caps Ridge is closed. It then felt like a long walk to Mount Washington but I made it. The trains were leaving which meant some solitude time up here! Finally I descended the cog back where I came from. I thought I was taking a risk not bringing my winter coat and I’m so glad I didn’t need it because it’s a pain carrying it when I don’t need it. Normally I would start at Pinkham Notch when hiking the 4 northern peaks but there’s still snow so I went up the cog which is closer to my home. Today I wanted to be in the Presidentials. I wanted to be in the Alpine. It was the perfect day. I haven't done Edmunds path in a while and thought....why not and I can go from there. I still have not the best hip but I've slowed my pace to make sure I don't overdue it. 1.7 mph I kept myself between that and 1.5. Edmunds path was beautiful but had to put on the spikes @ 2 miles. It actually was scary because I was hiking on a very thin monorail that was on a side slope. That last mile before you get to the Crawford Eisenhower sign was sketchy. I knew I wasn't gonna look forward to it but I pushed thru. I got up to Eisenhower which was perfect even with the little wind. The views were amazing. This is my first time hiking Eisenhower where there were no clouds in my way. I've hiked it 5 times now. I decided to do the Eisenhower loop via Crawford path. I started halfway thru that and I was post holing and there were some thin side slope spots I was like nope. Turned around. Went back up Eisenhower and started going down getting anxiety about going down that sketch part of Edmunds. I was truly nervous. I found a hiker who said he didn't want to do it either coming up from there. Multiple people said it was sketchy too so it wasn't just me. So I summited Eisenhower 3 times because we decided to take Crawford down because it reduced the anxiety. I was able to phone Samantha Sullivan who is my hero and she came to the rescue and car spotted us back to our cars. Thank you Samantha!!! I feel like things could've ended badly if I went down Edmund. I got to spend more time in the Alpine and got more of a leg workout. I'd say I earned my Chinese food today. And I'm ready for my next hike in the whites already. 2 hrs and 10 mins to get to Eisenhower. Hiked total 5 hrs and 50 mins for 10.25 miles. That included all my breaks. Such a fun day on Mount Washington and the areas surrounding it! When I got to the Ammonoosuc parking lot I was the first car to arrive and there there were no cars in the cog parking lot so I got lucky. On the cog path there was no snow from the base to the second junction. I find spring hiking the cog harder than winter hiking it because when you’re above the tree line you’re walking on a side hill for at least a quarter mile. I got to the summit and I had fun slapping snow off the signs and railings. There was no wind! I then went on a scenic tour around Nelson crag, alpine garden, and lion head! On Nelson Crag I was able to go bare booted without spikes. As I approached the Alpine Garden trail there was a snow field which I slid down seen in the 3rd pic. Then I was able to go bare booted from Alpine Garden to Lion head. Normally I would hike to Tuckerman ravine from Pinkham Notch, but my schedule was so tight I decided not to it this year so I made it part of this hike to view the ravine from the Lion Head Peak! One of the craziest things I did was climb the snow field to the end of the lion head trail seen in the 8th pic! There is no trail from lion head to West Side but there was enough snow for me to walk directly across seen in 9th pic. Finally I went from Westside trail back down the cog! As I was Descending the clouds started to roll in and it was completely cloudy by the time in finished. Mountains were still clear. 1000 mile round trip! And first road trip in the new car. Couldn’t have been more excited to be out of New Jersey again. There was a total eclipse, a total lack of cell service, actually visible stars, #vermont snow in April (and mud), an Airbnb with chickens… And I got my first glimpse into the incredibly intimidating #whitemountains passing through the #newhampshireoutdoors. The next time I visit the #presidentialrange it will be on foot. Thanks @julia.stanco.7 for being the protector of my cat and my main motivation to come home. Mount Washington (40) & Cannon Mountain! It’s been a while since my last hike because Mother Nature wasn’t very nice to me so I wanted to make the most of today 3/25/24! On my way up north the moon was shining so bright I could see the Franconia mountains before 5am! I started up the cog towards Washington at around 5:30. I was the first car in the lot and all the snow limited the amount of parking spaces. There was no wind. When I got above tree line I saw foot traffic was on the right side of the tracks instead of left so I thought it would be a nice change. It was so peaceful and quiet I didn’t see anybody else in the alpine zone. This hike to Washington makes 40 hikes and 64 overall visits! Despite all the snow there was not as much on the summit. On my way back because of how much it snowed I wanted to view the Alpine Garden Trail from Nelson Crag but surprisingly didn’t have much snow. Even though spring hiking is my least favorite there is a perk to it, most of the snow above tree line turns to mostly ice so you can pretty much go anywhere you want as long as you’re careful and not stepping on fragile alpine plants. An example is instead of going back up the little Nelson Crag hill I went around it seen in 4th pic. Coming down I saw like 12 skiers coming up and they all paid the $10 fee. I park at Ammonoosuc which is free with recreation pass. I was one of two cars in the lot with the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail unbroken seen in 7th pic. I then drove to Cannon Mountain. The Kinsman Ridge Trail was steep and tough and my legs were exhausted from Washington but I made it with a lovely view of Franconia Ridge. I got to do butt sliding on the way down! Took this shot back in 2020 when we tried to complete the southern presidential loop in the Whites… in May (which is a bad idea if you are not prepared for ALL conditions at that time of the year). We did not succeed. The water levels were just too high and insane… see image. 🤣 Getting to this waterfall was also quite a feat. We had to bushwhack down a pretty unstable and steep slope. Online it looks like there’s an actual trail to it, but we certainly did not find that. The Dry River trail is not used often so a lot of it is in poor condition and poorly marked. AllTrails doesn’t even have a trail that maps our route. It was a disaster of a trip, but we have a crazy story now. The Whites are NO JOKE people.
