Sometimes I have to remember to pinch myself. I have to remember that when it didn’t feel like things were falling into place, they were. When it didn’t feel like I was on the right track, I was. Sometimes I have to remember to be more grateful, for suntans on my deck in the snow in the middle of December, for Christmas energy, and for real love. Sometimes I have to remember to pinch myself, that I live down the street from my first wisdom teacher, who passed more than two decades ago. {Course Spotlight} Buddhist Wisdom Teachers From the beginnings of Buddhism, women have fought to be included in practice communities and fully recognized as teachers and lineage holders. Throughout this history, they have produced profound works with unique insights on compassion, practice, and tools for transformation. In this course, students will engage with the dharma teachings of several notable Buddhist women across cultures and historical contexts, as well as with mindfulness and meditation practices. Throughout the Spring 2024 semester, we will focus on six Buddhist women teachers, which students will help select from a broad group of dharma teachers across Buddhist traditions and regions—from China, Taiwan, Korea, India, Tibet, and the United States, and from the 18th century to today. We will look at how they have contributed to the development of Buddhist philosophy and praxis through their dharma teachings and social activism. Students will have the opportunity to observe or engage in mindfulness, insight, and restorative meditation practices, practice academic reflective writing skills, and develop professional skills in presentation and group leadership. To be seen👀 Back when we had The Hivery coworking spaces, our amazing team and I would talk about the importance of having eye contact with every, single person as they walked through the door. This seemingly small gesture (but vitally important acknowledgement) told each person right away: ✨I see you. ✨Come exactly as you are. ✨You belong here. It was (and is) one of the most important parts of The Hivery experience. To be seen. Regardless of where you are in the process of seeing yourself. 💛 This remains a fundamental commitment for The Hivery and for me personally. When we are seeking, stretching ourselves, looking inside for who we are and who we want to be, it's vulnerable work. It takes curiosity and courage (as taught by my amazing yoga mentor @alisonsmithyoga in my training @padmastudiofx ). #wisdomteachers It's brave work to be willing to continue to evolve, to continue to grow, to continue to inspect and introspect. There's always the option to stay small and safe (although I'd never recommend it). But, it's true that it's a courageous choice to want to improve yourself, or want to know yourself for that matter. This is your reminder that I see you. We see you. And the world needs this energy that you're putting forth. Whether it's committing to a meditation practice, writing a few morning pages, pondering a new idea, or simply putting yourself in situations that offer you creative flow, I'm proud of you for taking that step. SAGING 🌱 . Have you been saged by the aged, or have been saging with your aging? . I'm sure most of you have heard of saging - where the practice of using “smudge sticks” made from sage plant leaves to detoxify places and spaces around people. . Well, those that know me like play on words and I've come up with S-AGING - meaning someone who is using their age or their personal development journey as an excuse to give someone else unsolicited advice and share their wisdom with you. . Those that have experienced 'smudge stick' saging have probably choked on the smoke and found it a bit much having that wafted in your face. So this s-aging (aka wisdom smothering) can have the same affect. . I have been guilty of this in the past and now question before I hand out anything to anyone that has not asked beforehand. I know for myself, if I haven't asked someone for their advice and insights, I'm not ready to take it in. . From my point of view it's not kindness to sage someone when they haven't asked for it. (not always but most of the time!) . I have noticed this more where individuals who have thought themselves to be 'the elder' to be better and wiser than younger folk and just drop advice bombs willy nilly. . I've also fallen into the trap that all older people ARE wiser and seek their counsel and they must know better than me. But it's not always the case. . 'Smudge stick' saging can be a repellent for sure! But we might just be repelling people for the wrong reasons. Whether you have been s-aged or see yourself as a s-ager, what question can you be that will create more kindness in the world? . Questions and sentences I have found myself using. Last month I was commissioned by the Badger Trust to create a large sand art portrait of a Badger on a S.W England beach to highlight the senseless culling happening in the country. The total death toll since the culling began could now exceed 240,000 badgers – a supposedly protected native species. Wales, Scotland and Ireland refrained from culling.
