Thought piece 💭A bit heavy for a Sunday morning 😅 but I’ve been really thinking a lot lately and felt like sharing. The world is divided. We are living an era of polycrisis like never before and it’s getting harder than ever to grasp the gravity of all the issues. When things are this complex, we tend to fall back into trying to find reassurance and putting things into a binary framework. Right or wrong, left or right, black or white, good or bad. But things don’t always fall into this framework. And by categorizing everything, we forget about acceptance, listening to other opinions, understanding nuances, being open minded and work on solutions together. The problems at hand become then an argument about whose side is right, and the actual crisis isn’t even on the table anymore. As Sir David Attenborough wisely said “saving the planet is now a communication challenge”. We must bring everyone together and stop fighting about 1.5 vs 2 degrees or transition away vs phase out wording. Influencers, people in power positions, celebrities, community gatherers, everyone with a voice must take their responsibility of mobilizing everyone towards the same common goal: behavioural and spiritual change to lead humanity into its next evolution. My following is small, a little more than 400 followers, and maybe only 2-3 people will actually read my post. But it’s ok. If you can plant a seed even in one person’s mind, you succeeded. Change has to come from within, and I know I will continue to plant seeds. George Henry Gerberding was a synod president in the United Lutheran Church. Here he writes on the conversion of the Philipian jailer in Acts 16. Gerberding notes that the jailer had earlier in the evening undertaken a very specific act of cruelty, then upon conversion, with his own hands, washes the cuts and bruises. There is a progression, or natural effect, of receiving “mercy”, and willingly exercising “mercy” in the deed of alleviating the suffering of a prisoner. I would say it would take a special kind of heart for an expositor to notice this detail in the text. Is the infliction of pain in a prison context simply a necessary measure for security, or is it a sign of the guards being unconverted? Do we want today to hear stories of brilliant conversions, but also be able to keep our lists of people who do not deserve mercy. Would the jailer still be able to do his duty, without someone undergoing “pain and anguish”?
