I remember when I got two cases of this Chambolle delivered to my place. A warm sunny day which meant we could try one bottle immediately. Chambolle is normally delicate and quiet in the glass with low to medium smooth tannins. But back then, in 2018, the wine was tough, noisy and rough on the palate. So we gave it time. And suffered with the 2013 and 2017 in the meantime. Now, in 2024, however it is time for the 2015. Time has smoothened the tannins. Time has given the wine delicate tertiary flavours in addition. So right now on this sunny day, before the rain sets in, this Chambolle is at its prime. Complex, delicate, smooth all what Pinot from this sleepy village is all about. And the good thing is - there are still quite a few bottles left in the cave. What a treasure- all thanks to the good guy Patrice Rion in Burgundy. Who is fighting frosty nights as we speak. While we are just dithering here, on Cote d'Azur, discussing what is the next wine we should bring to the table. I GRADUATED … finally! 👩🏻🎓🍷💁🏻♀️ . I almost didn’t attend the awards ceremony last night after completing my WSET Diploma last May. The reason is honestly that I felt a bit of a fraud. I started the course in 2017 but avoided the final dreaded D3 paper. I knew at the time I wasn’t prepared and decided my ego would rather not finish the qualification than fail an exam (stupid I know). Anyway, I’ve been nagged along the years to finish, but it just didn’t feel important anymore considering I had already gained the knowledge and didn’t need the Diploma for my career having experience in its place. I’m also very lucky to teach the lower WSET courses. I let it go. 🕊️ . Having my boss threaten to fire me last year (I think you were joking right @berenice_wine?!), I decided to give it one attempt and from Jan - May 2023 I studied at 5am EVERYDAY before work, gave up all weekends and even joined a study group (thank you @wineriaofficial - I could NOT have done this without you), and here I am… 7 years later finally getting crowned. 👸🏻 . It was so special to have the beautiful @lauracatenamd hand over the scroll. Your outreached arms as I walked across the stage made it worth it. To then have @jancisrobinson @lauracatenamd & @sonalholland_masterofwine together in a room was wow. Absolute powerhouse women in wine that made me proud to be part of the wine industry and so glad I made the effort to attend the graduation. They talked about working hard, probably my strongest attribute, so why feel ashamed of turning up to celebrate my success no matter how much time had passed?! 🙌🏻 . And after the formalities, I was treated to a celebratory dinner by my mentor (and inspiration) @melissa_draycott with @queenadwong rocking up with a casual bottle of @champagnetaittinger 02 (!) Comtes 😭 Drinking just stunningly alongside the delights of @qualitychop 🥂 . A huge congratulations to all Diploma graduates of 2023/4 @wsetglobal . I am now Charlotte Gordon DipWSET 👏🏻 . P.s - it was also amazing to see @klearhos_kanellakis @bailingforwine @thewinequeen_ @j.wakefield being handed that precious scroll also 🏆

One of the highlights of my trip to the Loire with @loirevalleywinesaus in 2022 was meeting some of the winemakers of one of France’s youngest appellations, Touraine-Chenonceaux. The white wines are 100% Sauvignon Blanc aged for at least six months on lees to develop complexity. Oak is forbidden, yet the texture and richness of the fruit gives the illusion of Chardonnay-esque ageing. Touraine sauvignon blanc is a good value, widely made, fruity wine, not to be confused with Touraine-Chenonceaux. This fruit comes from the slopes of the River Cher. The soil is a mixture of flint and clay, while the elevation allows for better ventilation, which reduces disease and allows a long, slow ripening period for intense flavour development. It is a very different sauvignon blanc – dry with a lovely balance of rich tropical fruit and textural weight. Delightfully, this appellation is nicknamed the ‘AOC of women’ with women making up more than 40% of the winemakers. The bottle of @domainedessouterrains 2020 is bursting with ripe peaches, cantaloupes and pineapples. It’s not all fruit salad though, there’s an intense stony minerality and spicy fennel seeds. A little bottle age (these wines age well I’m told) yields a hint of honey and dried wildflowers. This was gifted on the trip and has been waiting the right meal to crack it. A chicken and vegetable risotto was a perfect friend.

This time next year I will be in the homeland of this baby drinking it and it’s buddies. @nyetimber was one of the estates that put English sparkling on the map with the vintage wines often beating Champagne in international sparkling competitions. It smells like the seashore - salt spritz, crushed seashells, and the mineral umami of dried seaweed. There’s lemon zest, fresh scones and the texture of freshly whipped cream on the palate. Lean and savoury and you’ll find yourself reaching for another pour before you know it. I’ve heard, from those who remember, that this is what ye olde Champagne (pre-climate change) tasted like. Yesterday was a dream come true for this ol’ Wine Diva. First trip to Italy and finally made it to the place of fairytales- San Gimignano. A special and unique way of vine pruning is the one developed on Santorini, known as the Santorini “kouloura”, or “wreath” or “basket”. The origin of this way of training vines is lost down in the passage of time and has been perfected to such an extent that, apart from being the most suitable way of training them, it also gives vines the appearance of natural works of art. In order to train the vines into a Santorini “kouloura”, experienced vine dressers weave the canes of the vine into the shape of a large wreath-like basket which rests on the island’s volcanic soil. Once fruiting begins, the grapes grow sheltered within their “woven” baskets. In that manner, the yield is in no danger of being compromised and the vines weather out the adverse Santorini soil and climatic conditions, such as: *Strong winds which gather momentum especially in spring when budding begins; *Volcanic sand which lashes the vines as it is carried away and swirled around by the wind; *The scorching summertime sun; *Lack of water and moisture (with the exception of the nocturnal sea mist). Love, passion, family legacy and tradition, pioneering viticulture and winemaking, strong women at a decision making levels and genuine hospitality result in their outstanding wines.
