Queen of the Haunted Dell, poor sweet Betsy Bell. This is arguably one of the most recognized drawings from the M.V. Ingram book, An Authenticated History of the Famous Bell Witch. It was released in 1894 and considered by many as the authority on the folklore and the first full length publication about the haunting. "‘Mid woodland bowers, grassy dell, By an enchanted murmuring stream, Dwelt pretty blue-eyed Betsy Bell, Sweetly thrilled with love’s young dream. Life was like the magic spell, That guides a laughing stream, Sunbeams glimmering on her fell, Kissed by lunar’s silvery gleam. But elfin phantomas cursed the dell, And sylvan witches all unsean, As our tale will truely tell, Wielded sceptre o’re the queen." As a child the stories I heard growing up nearby Adams, TN lead to my fascination with the local lore. To say I have spent a good deal of my adult life associated with the haint “Ole Kate" is an understatement. Theatre productions, interviews, book cover art, overnight investigations, lectures and festivals have come before now but Haints and Heroes is informed from an older perspective beyond the spectacle of it all. Preserving and maintaining Elizabeth Powell's permanent resting place was part of the inspiration behind Haints and Heroes Heritage Arts Festival and a portion of our proceeds will go to the Long Branch Cemetery for continued maintenance and upkeep. She lived a long life and passed away at 82 years of age. She spent her remaining years in Yalobusha County, Mississippi, near daughter Eliza Jane. I hope to give voice to the woman beyond those few years of torment by a mysterious spirit in my original theatre piece "Echoes of Ash and Oak".
