I'm tardy, but here it is! My July was filled with some drama, some suspense, and THE worst book I've ever read! Four out of the five I read with various friends, and it made it so much fun to get through all of them, including (did I already mention!?) the worst book that I've ever read! The suspense in The Family Upstairs was well paced and the twists and turns in The Last Mrs. Parrish kept me yelling at the book and texting my friends the whole way through. We Begin At The End was an amazing journey that had me in tears and We Are the Brennans was a family drama that had me thinking about the soap operas (General Hospital, anyone?) that I grew up on and missing the family-owned restaurant I worked at for years. And then there was Dial A For Aunties, the worst book I have ever read! I couldn't believe what I was reading because I couldn't believe it had been published. Finished reading We Are The Brennans -thank you @celadonbooks for the advanced copy! In a very compact nutshell, it's an Irish-American family drama that made me wish I had a bunch of siblings and also that I owned an Irish pub. Sorta. There was a lot of miscommunication due to crazy family secrets that reminded me partly of watching General Hospital and partly of all the years I worked for family-owned restaurant and got to watch them all interact (fight). I enjoyed the book, but it left me wishing the characters would just talk to each other to iron out their issues. And then the end- no spoilers- but WHOA was it abrupt. I passed my copy along to my LFL friend, Samantha at @callawayplace.lfl (she plans to place it in her LFL when she finishes) because she's become one of my favorite book buddies! Starting something new! I have a teeeeeeeny little library and can't fit as many books for adults in there as I would like. I started thinking it would be kinda cool to just leave the excess books in random places when I go for walks, to the park, etc. After brainstorming with my daughter and husband, we came up with (though we're definitely not the first) books in the wild! There are so many awesome things my LFL has brought into my life, but the most rewarding has to be the community that has sprouted up around it. We started in December with only a handful of local library stewards in a facebook group and have blossomed into two groups, one with 23 stewards from our city and one with over 500 members from our community. We have organized two events so far but our next is the one that I'm the most excited for. It started when I saw a post for a Community Book Swap (@morgan kelly somewhere for her bookworm lfl!) and I brought it to my fellow stewards because I realllllllllly wanted to host our own. They were excited too and now it's happening! Saturday, June 26th 2-4 pm at Daycreek Park in Rancho Cucamonga! A book in honor of the monarch caterpillars currently munching away right behind the library! But, I'm a little sad to have learned that the milkweed variety that I planted (second picture) is actually potentially harmful to monarchs! 😭 I'll attach the link so you can read all the details if you're inclined, but the summary is that because it is tropical and does not die back each year, a parasite is allowed to build up in the plant that is harmful to the monarch life cycle/reproductive habits. Unfortunately this milkweed variety is sold at many stores and we purchase it without realizing we're causing problems for these beautiful creatures. Because my plant is young it's likely fine, but as soon as it's been devoured I'm plan to pull it up and plant a California Native variety. We're feeling buggy on Farrington Street! I love to use beneficial insects in my garden to keep pesticide-free. We released ladybugs about 2 weeks ago and today we released our sweet little praying mantises to rid our plants of mites and aphids. Story time! Earth Day bummed me out when someone decided to take aaallll my pinecones and string (lol- hope they're getting put to good use!) and I needed to take a couple days to be sad and neglect my library. I went out this evening after talking it over with some friends and found, to my total surprise and with an incredible amount of joy, that all the books had done a complete turn-over because this little library just has a life of it's own! My sad pouting time is over and the library has been filled the rest of the way (these Magic Castle Readers are so much fun, especially Ice-Cream Cows!). I even scrounged some left-over coloring sheets to put in the container! Thank you to my community for believing in this little library and keeping it going, my heart is full of gratitude! Earth Day may not be officially until 4/22, but if anything deserves an entire week of celebration it's our beautiful planet! All weekend -while supplies last- we will have coloring sheets, a nature walk activity sheet (don't forget your magnifying glass!), a nature mobile on display and string bundle you can use to make your own, a diy bird feeder (peanut butter is involved, be aware for allergies!), bookmarks, a little book to make that has an earth day pledge, and a library FULL of kids books celebrating our planet. I took a chance starting my lfl because I work at the neighborhood elementary school (fingers crossed no one goes into middle school and then decides to come back and tp my house!). One of the sweetest things about my library is when kiddos recognize me and are just in disbelief that I don't live at school.
