It’s World Book Day and I visited my town’s oldest (and only) second-hand bookstore! With over 20,000 books crammed inside, it feels like you’re stepping into one. As I roamed the aisles, turning pages and exploring, I found myself thinking about their previous owners and the emotions they might have felt while reading them. Recently, I was asked about the first series that made me fall in love with reading, which was “A Series of Unfortunate Events.” I must have been around 8 or 9 at the time, and I remember feeling so sad when each book ended, impatiently awaiting the next release. Published in 1901 during the World’s Fair “Pan American Expedition” which showcased some of the most important authors and literary accomplishments as part of the expedition. The 1901 Wessels edition of Dracula was part of the showcase. This edition was published just four years after the first edition in 1897 and revolutionized the horror genre in every way. It's been a little while since I've talked about our vintage and antique books in stock (well, unless we're talking about books start with "science" and end in "fiction" obviously lol). When I was a child I loved old books because of the smell, and also I thought it made me seem smarter to be seen reading one (idiot child). Now as an adult, I love antique books because I absolutely adore the reality of holding something that someone else also held 100 years or more ago. The Count of Monte Cristo two-volume set we have in stock was published in 1910 (and is a set that is hard to find together). The first filmed version of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" came out that same year. Absolutely wild stuff. Anyway, we have a fair number of vintage and antiquarian books in stock, all at pretty reasonable prices as not many of them are in pristine condition, but all of them are in good condition and still worthy of a new home. Today’s #marblemonday selection is from our copy of Pratique de L’art de Faire Éclorre et D’élever en Toute Saison des Oiseaux (Practicing of the art of hatching and raising domestic birds of all species in all seasons). This was published in 1751 by author René-Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur, a brilliant French entomologist and writer. Throughout his life, he studied and wrote on a myriad of scientific studies, not limited to but proven by his paper solving a general problem in geometry, his introduction of the Réaumur temperature scale, his contributions to the study of insects, and his discoveries regarding iron and steel. Not to mention the many notable posts he held throughout his life. Unsurprisingly, given the nationality of its esteemed author, this copy possesses a beautiful and traditional French Curl marbling pattern. The fore-edges are rubricated, with foxing and spotting present as well as some staining near the final pages. Several tipped-in pages are interspersed throughout the volume, further expounding on Réaumur’s finer points. Finally, there are simple headpieces and tailpieces throughout the copy, an exemplary piece of French art, craftsmanship, and genius.
