This past weekend, I picked up one of Beverly Cleary's Ramona books and wallowed in nostalgia for a few hours. When I finished it, hungry for more, I read another one, Ramona's World, which is where I found this quotation which cracked me up. I am absolutely a word person. Is anyone else out there feeling like these days words are going out of style? It seems like every time I Google something for information, I am served up a bunch of videos. I don't want to watch a video - I want to read some words. When I was a kid, early chapter books were illustrated of course - for example, Alan Tiegreen's lovely black and white line art for the Ramona books. I snapped the picture I included above from the page where I found the quote. When I first decided to move forward with publishing Making Peas, I knew that illustrations were an absolute must, and that they had to be GOOD, by which I mean they had to bring the story world to life and capture the imagination. I think Tina Perko's work does both, and I am thankful for her every day. I was in the children's section of a local bookstore not too long ago, looking over their early reader chapter book selection, and I was surprised at how heavily illustrated they were. The illustration-to-word ratio was way higher than I remember being common when I was an early reader. Is anyone else noticing this as a trend? I can see both pros and cons to this for young readers, and I am curious about what others think? Please comment below!

Part 2: Another trip down memory lane was reading the three-book anthology by Beverly Cleary, which includes “Jean and Johnny,” “Fifteen,” and “The Luckiest Girl.” My mom tells me she was holding on to this book for years before I was old enough to read it. The characters are all in high school, but they experience love (or “love”) in its different stages. The books were written in the ‘50s, so the trends and slang are antiquated, but in an endearing way. “Jean and Johnny” is about the youngest girl (in the books), Jean, who gets noticed by an older handsome boy (think flannel guy like “Sixteen Candles”). She quickly develops a crush and engages in all the cringy slightly stalker things we all did in that age, such as trying to take a sneaky photo or keep track of the hallway routines. The story is sweet, and when I would read it, I could relate to it the most since I hadn’t had any relationships yet. I’m glad to be past that age, but it’s nice to revisit a time when I did feel that way. “Fifteen” is about a girl entering her first relationship, but it mostly centers around all her self-doubt in the beginning stages of dating. As an adult, I found the character bratty and immature with her parents and annoyances in the beginning, but she had great character development by the end. “The Luckiest Girl” is my favorite. The main character (from Oregon) has an opportunity to go to a high school in California for a year. She has a few relationships, makes new friends, and treats the experience like an adventure. This book always made me pine for an experience where I could go to a high school in a completely different place where nobody knew me for a year and reinvent myself. The ending is bittersweet, and even now as an adult, I felt a tear in my eye. Sometimes you gotta go back to the classics. No one ever did it quite like Beverly Cleary did it. She blazed the trail for every children's writer (and many adult writers too) that came after her. My personal theory for reaching reluctant readers has always been that you keep the chapters short and use plenty of swift twists, turns and cliffhangers. Cleary, on the other hand, wrote long, roomy chapters that rarely ended with anything wildly surprising. And yet...millions of kids (and reluctant readers) devoured her novels, and still do. I'm reminded of what Jose Saramago said when someone asked him why he didn't use punctuation in his writing. He said: if you write simply enough, you don't need it. Cleary, whose prose is a masterclass in simplicty, didn't need to shorten her chapters. She kept kids interest for 30 pages or more because she wrote clearly and compellingly. Another thing about those long chapters. They are, in essence, the middle grade equivalent of tiny novellas. Which makes me wonder if Jonathan Franzen was once a Beverly Cleary fan, because his own novels are built in the same way: interlocking novellas that add up to something more. Read any Henry Huggins novel and then read The Corrections and tell me I'm wrong. She was born this day in 1916. 🥳 🏅The award-winning author of children's and young adult books is best-known for her stories featuring characters such as Henry Higgins, sisters Beatrice and Ramona Quimby, and (my favorite) Ralph S. Mouse. 🐭 Raised in Portland, Oregon, Cleary's drive to write characters with which children could identify stemmed from her own early dissatisfaction with most children's books. 📚 But even at a young age, she persisted in finding stories she liked -- those about regular children who did regular things -- the focus of her own writing later in life. Cleary earned an English degree from the University of California, Berkeley -- GO BEARS! 🐻 -- and a 2nd BA in library science from the University of Washington, before becoming a children's librarian in 1939. During World War II, she put her library know-how to work serving her country at an Army hospital in Oakland, California. 🏖 She then settled in Carmel-by-the-Sea after the war and set to work writing children's fiction. Cleary is one of the best-selling children's book authors of all time with more than 91 million copies of her 40+ books sold since 1950. She was my first favorite author, closely followed by Judy Blume who said of Cleary, “You made me fall off the sofa, laughing. … When I began to write you were my inspiration. You will always be my inspiration.” On Friday during lessons, I spoke with one of my fifth grade students about her. She said, "You're not sad?" I thought for a moment and said, "She lived to be 104! She's written so much. What a life Beverly Cleary led." "Beverly Cleary!" she shrieked. "You know her?" "Yes!" "Wow....Ramona....you read Ramona?" I said. "Mmm hmm..." she said, and then we moved on to our math lesson. But sitting here on Sunday morning, I can't help but think of that conversation and sit again in amazement. Thank you, Beverly Cleary. Beverly Cleary. Died yesterday at age 104. Her life seems to have been happy. Beverly Cleary has been a well-loved children's author for decades. When I was young her books were in continuous demand. Ramona, Henry, Ribsy, Ralph. They flew off the shelves! I love her gentle, upbeat humour and her understanding of ordinary children and the details of their lives. She wrote about the small-town, middle-class life she knew. My favourite Cleary book is Ellen Tebbits. While best known for her children's series books, Cleary also wrote 4 teen books. "Fifteen" in 1956, "The Luckiest Girl" in 1958, "Jean and Johnny" in 1959 and "Sister of the Bride" in 1963. They are so very different from modern YA! The stories are simple, sweet and charming. No internet, no social media, no heavy, serious social issues. The heroines deal with high school stuff and worry about their popularity, clothes and boys. But the books are not as dated as they may seem on the surface. In essence, these books are about girls finding their own identity and learning to be authentic and not being "fake" in order to impress others. The books are full of period details like soda shops, saddle shoes and full skirts. I love the delightful illustrations by Beth & Joe Krush. I don't know what modern YA readers would make of these. While I like some modern YA, so much of it is so angsty, so serious and so dark that it forgets to be fun. In comparison, these 4 books seem gossamer light. But truthfully I prefer upbeat, sweet stories like these over books that are edgy and grim. I always identified with shy Jean and her glasses, lamely trying to attract cool Johnny. I love Shelley's journey to a new life in The Luckiest Girl. But I think Jane's awkward attempts in Fifteen make that book my favourite of these 4.
