Lady of the Forest Novel - physical - secondhand 🌳 I read this as part of my 2024 reading challenge bingo and definitely wouldn’t have picked it up otherwise, but I am glad I did. It was quite long and could have used some editing down. It has multiple POVs which I love, but there was a lot of retelling of the same events without adding much when switching perspectives. I wish there were more female characters, but Roberson already made up an additional female character from the source material (explained in a great author’s note). The two female characters were really excellent though. They were strong and sassy and independent in very different ways, while feeling firmly rooted in their time in history. There was also a tonne of historical detail which I really enjoyed - especially the fashion! Swipe to see all the tabs I put in! Yellow for romance-specific moments (this isn’t necessarily a romance but I love a romantic (sub)plot) and blue for sassy lines or memorable scenes. She was extremely resilient and always looked on the bright side of things, even when her life was imploding. She left a horrible relationship with just her few belongings and kept her head held high. She had a few run-ins with single dad, Cole, and when she found out he needed a nanny, decided to apply. He immediately said no, not because she was overqualified, but because she was bringing out feelings he thought he didn’t possess. Cole is the complete opposite of Delaney. Where she is loud and has no filter, he is a bit shy and doesn’t talk much, unless it’s to his daughter, Ava. He reluctantly hire’s Delaney to be his daughter’s nanny and does everything in his power to keep her at a distance. He thinks he's doing a good job, except he can’t help but notice how well Delaney fits with his family. He swore he’d never let anyone in that could have the potential to break him and Ava’s heart, but Delaney wormed her way in. Delaney and Cole have insane chemistry, even when he’s got his grump shield on, and their banter is top-notch. They both have issues because of past relationships, so it takes them a while to realize that they can overcome those traumas and find their person. The way Delaney loved Ava as if she was her own daughter was so beautiful, and once Cole and Delaney gave into temptation, it was hot! Such a great read! 📖 BOOK REVIEW The Frozen River By Ariel Lawhon ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ At a glance 👀: Historical fiction, mystery, midwife MC, 18th century Maine, family drama, small town, womanhood, motherhood. Lawhon drew me in immediately with stunning prose and badass protagonist Martha Ballard, a groundbreaking feminist midwife in the 1700’s. Community plays a big role, and I grew to understand and care for the wide cast of characters as the story developed. There’s also a couple excellent antagonists who I loved to hate. I can’t stop raving about THE FROZEN RIVER! The writing is vivid and uses dazzling imagery to set the atmospheric tone. The mystery is captivating and the strong sense of justice keeps the stakes high. Set in the same universe as The one, The passengers, and The marriage act, this book explores the possible consequences of being able to raise an AI child in the metaverse, and the moral dilemmas implicated in developing the necessary technology to produce flawless virtual avatars. The story centres on a reality show where 6 families compete to be the favourite while raising an AI child. The winners will be able to choose either a monetary prize to start a real-world family or to keep the AI child they raised. All other children will be terminated. I loved how the book developed, from quite happy to very dark, very quickly. With short chapters that leave you wanting to know more, this book was impossible to put down. The twists were breath-taking and unpredictable, and kept coming even when you finally thought you had everything figured out. Marrs truly is one of the best speculative fiction writers out there, and if you haven't read his books I urge you to do so asap!
