Weather Whiplash The drought was about to end in dramatic fashion I continued on the long lonesome ridges through high temperatures. It seemed like a switch had been flipped as all of the leaf cover vanished, and with it all the shade. The green tunnel was no more. I realized just how much of a temperature difference tree cover makes as I continued down the ridges The trail went through several cow fields and I mistook a cow path for the trail, ending up a half mile off trail on an old farming road. Whoops. As I continued through the heat I bumped into Yeti, another flip flopper. I had been steadily catching up to him according to the shelter log entries and it was nice to chat with another thru hiker for a bit. I made camp up at a windy vista and the sunset seemed rather ominous The next day started warm, but the temperature fell further and further as the day progressed. A storm rolled in. I continued along the ridgeline and the temperature sank 40 degrees in a single day to hover in the 30ā€™s. Rain fell steadily. I made my way to Deer Field shelter on top of the mountain and was dismayed to see the wind was blowing straight into the shelter and there was little tree cover for a tent. I was soaked and didnā€™t have any other options, it was getting dark I squeezed in to a dry corner of the shelter to cook dinner then started to shiver uncontrollably. And then my fuel canister ran out. I quickly changed into dry clothes and was happy to have a spare fuel can in my pack. I ate dinner then hunkered down in my tent. It was the most miserable night I had on trail. Cold, windy, wet, I didnā€™t sleep much. I couldnā€™t wait to get off that mountain Days: 144-145 Mi: 681-644 #appalachiantrail #appalachiantrailthruhike #appalachiantrail2023 #atclassof2023 #atthruhike #thruhike

Grape, age 23 ā€¢ From Gainesville, Florida ā€¢ After figuring out who he really was over the last few years, Grape is out on the trail to live life as the person he found himself to be in all that soul searching. He's here to put one foot in front of the other and just, well, walk. ā€¢ When given the opportunity to help someone out, he didn't think twice before saying yes. Grape is hiking with the ashes of Kevin "Chowder" Lique, as well as a picture of Chowder on the AT in Shenandoah National Park. Grape didn't know Chowder personally, nor his family, but offered to carry him the entire way in order to fulfill one of Chowder's life-long dreams. An avid outdoorsman, Chowder enjoyed fishing and hiking with his family and "man camp" weeks out in Nevada with his buddies every year. Unfortunately Chowder passed away in October 2023. Chowder's son, Mark, says there were many volunteers that came out to offer to bring Chowder along on the trail, but something about Grape's generosity and genuineness really stood out. ā€¢ Grape doesn't know exactly what's next, but it sounds like he'll be somewhere with more trails to explore. #personalproject #atthruhike #ATHikers #MassachusettsAT #hikerportraits #portraitsfromtheAT

Gear Magnet, age 48 + Landline, age 17 ā€¢ From Vale, North Carolina ā€¢ Landline graduated high school early in order to hike the trail with his dad, Gear Magnet. They said everything has been really great so far and they have loved the MA section a lot. ā€¢ The worst part about the trail has been how demoralizing it can be when it rains, between trying to set up camp and cook and everything being wet, it can be really rough. ā€¢ Gear Magnet will head back to work after this, and Landline will go on to trade school. Used to doing longer hikes as a family, the AT has given these two a lot of solid bonding time. #personalproject #atthruhike #ATHikers #MassachusettsAT #hikerportraits #portraitsfromtheAT

You, me, McAfee I got a text from Reset and No Joke (@ralesidebottom) recommending a sunrise visit to McAfee knob. I wasnā€™t a fan of getting out of my tent in the dark, but decided the sunrise view would be worth it. I broke camp and made my way up to the vista. Reset and No Joke werenā€™t tellin no jokes, the view at the vista was breathtaking with the autumn colors and rising sun. I was elated that I reached this iconic spot on the AT. Apparently I had just missed Silver Linings (@silverstrailstories) by about an hour. I got some pictures from kind day-hikers then continued on my way After a rock scramble with rebar, like babyā€™s first Whites ascent, I reached the Dragons Tooth rock outcropping. I could hear a college-age guy sitting at the top of the rock on speakerphone with his mom. He wanted to go on a long AT section hike after completing his college semester; his mom wanted him to find an internship. I hoped heā€™d take the hike I left the Virginia Triple Crown area the following day and began a pattern of ascending ridges then descending into valleys of farmland, crossing the Eastern Continental Divide. Water sources dwindled, and I received word that all of the water sources in the Triple Crown dried up shortly after I left One ridgeline had many cairns stacked from the farming days of old, when locals tried to make the mountaintops more suitable for sheep grazing. I counted nearly 50 cairns. I followed the spine of the long ridge and made camp above a farm. I could hear dogs barking and cows mooā€™ing in the valley below as I hit the hay Days: 144-145 Mi: 715-681 #appalachiantrail #appalachiantrailthruhike #appalachiantrail2023 #atclassof2023 #atthruhike #thruhike

Just over 200 miles on the Appalachian Trail. Iā€™ve come to understand another reason why I will hike on. Itā€™s not just to be a triple crown hiker, it is to also understand the spirit of endurance and how it relates to this adventure as well as my previous hikes. I donā€™t have it figured out yet. I think about it now everyday while Iā€™m hiking alone. I see it in the mountains and the trees as they appear everlasting and forever on the horizon. I feel it with every stab of my trekking poles into the ground as I pull myself up the trail. Itā€™s in the stories I share of my past adventures, and in the stories other hikers share with me. This everlasting thing that demands the will to carry on and echo through time like legends of history. I donā€™t think Iā€™ll become a man that the old legends are made of. Maybe Iā€™ll meet some out here. I am only walking. Those legends are already written. As I keep on this adventure, I want to walk and consider the spirit of endurance. What is to me? To others? Why does it push so many of us to these great challenges? Is there something more beyond it all? Thousands of miles over countless landscapes, and I still have so many questions. My goal now is to have most of them answered by the time I reach Katahdin. @ohreallylar #TheTrek #TrektheAT #ATThruHike #AppalachianTrail #AppalachianTrail2024 #ATClassof2024 #AT2024 #ThruHike #ThruHiker #ThruHiking

// HIKERS GOTTA HIKE \\ ā€œHikers gotta hikeā€ was our motto to get ourselves away from a town or trail magic vortex. Itā€™s what got us up in the morning to crush big miles. ā€œHikers gotta hikeā€ was our motivator, our inside joke, our motto. It was a fellowship of big miles and even bigger laughs. The four of us equalized by the trail but separated by different paces through out the day. A journey of a few hundred miles together before circumstances end this fellowship of hiking. Sideshow has completed his flip flop from last year and will adventure elsewhere. Food Truck is heading off trail for family things but will be back to hike more. Juice is going to re-kit at Harperā€™s Ferry for something much lighter so he may take off and do more miles. We had a lot of good times hiking together. Conversations to make the miles go faster and laughing at camp about some of the most obscene jokes they could muster up. ā€œVroom vroomā€ said the Platypus. Itā€™s weird to have hiked so many miles with these guys and realizing Iā€™ll be back to how the hike started. Passing new groups of other already bonded hikers and feeling on the outside again. However, as the trail is a great equalizer and does always provides, Iā€™ll find other hikers to hike with and enjoy this trail with. The original four though, thatā€™s a core highlight and a genuine base of this hike. Sticking together through the Smokeyā€™s then a few hundred more beyond that, we bonded. Itā€™ll be difficult to find other hikers that have that same mentality of ā€œhikers gotta hikeā€. The fellowship ends, but the friendship will endure. . . . . . . . . . . #appalachiantrail #appalachiantrailthruhike #appalachiantrail2024 #ATthruhike #backpacking #hiking #camping #traillife #at2024 #atclassof2024 #atnobo2024 #getoutside #appalachianmountains

Day 32 AT Thru Hike 2024 Location: Tennessee Start: Hwy 19E - 404.6 End: Slide Hollow campsite by stream - 414.0 Miles: 9.4 Ascent: 2272 | Descent: 1905 Sleep: Tent Mood: šŸ™‚ Mission Possible - Power Beyond Today will be another new experience on the trail. Susy, my wife, will be joining me and Brad as we trek toward Damascus VA. We are unsure how long this 70-mile stretch will take usā€”hopefully less than a week. Our neighbor Sandy, graciously offered to drive us to the trail and deliver Boomer to Pet Prairie Dog Retreat after a night at her house. Thank you Sandy! Got to the trail around 9:30 am. The terrain will be a little better on this section, At least the elevation gain/loss should not be as bad as what we have had to this point. GA, NC and TN have been hard. We did pass the official 400-mile mark on the trail! In a few days weā€™ll be entering our fourth state of 14. We only went 9.6 miles today. This being Susyā€™s first day, she is tired. She didnā€™t get much sleep the last couple nights, needs to develop her trail legs, and is carrying a pack that weighs more than a quarter of her body weight. I am going to treat her to a great meal tonight (boiling water stirred into a Good To-Go dehydrated meal packet)! We pitched our tent at the Slide Hollow tent site, a nice location near a mountain stream. We had it all to ourselves so nobody snoring here! Reflecting on our hike, we saw a beautiful waterfall and walked along the Elk River for a bit on this section of the trail. We did get a little rain but were able to put up the tent dry. An easy day, but I will take it. Day 31 AT Thru Hike 2024 Location: North Carolina Start: Hwy 19E - 404.6 End: Hwy 19E - 404.6 Miles: 0.0 Sleep: Home Mood: šŸ™‚ Mission Possible - Power Beyond A day to relax. A full zero means two nights in a bed. Had a lot of errands and things to get done during my brief stay in Banner Elk. First thing was for us to make breakfast for everyone and deliver the seven additional thru hikers who stayed at our home to the trail, with the help of our neighbor Sandy. Brad and I got a haircut at Leviā€™s in Banner Elk then ran to Boone to a small outfitter to get some new gear. This is a small store and the selection was not great. I got a new sleeping pad which is smaller in size and weight when packed! We then went to the original Mast General Store in Valle Crucis and found a replacement for my Sawyer water filtration device which was leaking. Little things.. The rest of the day was spent relaxing, eating and packing Susyā€™s gear. Iā€™ve noticed while on the trail that my legs are getting stronger but my upper body is starting to lose muscle mass. Iā€™m going to start a new program and I encourage those interested to join me. Iā€™m calling it Commit 100. When Iā€™m at camp each day, Iā€™ll do 100 reps of various upper body exercisesā€”pushups, planks, and triceps dips. My arms are starting to get wrinkles! Some years ago, while working behind a desk and driving long miles, I was terribly out of shape, not taking care of myself. I made some adjustments to my eating and made it a priority to get active and focus on my health. I hope all followers of these posts will choose to commit to their health and do the Commit 100 challenge with me. Besides going for walks, find a few exercises: squats, lunges, pushups, step ups, etc. Do 100 everyday and letā€™s celebrate a new us by the time I finish this hike! Remember, itā€™s a commitment. It may be difficult at first, just start slow. Make it a habit! Day 30 AT Thru Hike 2024 Location: TN / NC Start: Roan High Knob Shelter - 387.7 End: Hwy 19E - 404.6 Miles: 16.9 Ascent: 2480 | Descent: 5875 Sleep: Home Mood: šŸ™‚ Mission Possible - Power Beyond Been looking forward to this day for a while. By the end of the day we will have put on 400 miles. More importantly, our destination is 15 minutes from my house and we plan to take a ZERO. The night in the shelter was tough. The shelter was not very level, so my sleeping pad and I woke up three feet from where we started the night before. My sleeping pad also lost a lot of air and it felt like I was sleeping on plywood, plus, the R-value diminished, which made it colder. Today we hiked nearly 17 miles and it was again beautiful, especially the last six miles. While on top of Hump Mountain we could see Grandfather Mountain, Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain. The town I live in, Banner Elk, sits between Sugar and Beech. Iā€™ve been blessed by Trail Angels and Trail Magic on this journey, so I initiated some of my own. While at the Roan Mountain shelter, I talked with some of the hikers weā€™d just met there and offered for them to stay at my home tonightā€”dinner and breakfast included! I gave Susy a heads-up and she ran to the grocery store to buy lots of burgers, brats, eggs and more before picking me and Brad up where the AT meets Hwy 19E at 1:45 pm. The other hikers got to Hwy 19E at 4:30 and my very helpful neighbor Sandy helped me pick them all up. We got everyone to our home where all the hikers got hot showers and did their laundry. Then we enjoyed a great meal on the deck before resupplying at the local Dollar General. The guys enjoyed a sauna and five of them slept on the wrestling mats while the ladies and the rest of us enjoyed the comfort of real beds. It was a fun evening, and we made some new friends! All and all a great day, which included time with Susy and Boomer. Forgive me, insta fam, for abandoning you this past month. I have videoā€™s in my drafts that I havenā€™t finished editing, photos piling up in my camera roll. But I have been dealing with some burnout for a couple weeks (Iā€™ll get to that in another post) so most days the last thing I have wanted to do was compose what in the world Iā€™ve been up to. But letā€™s start gently, with some quick snippets of some of the weeks Iā€™ve had on trail. This was mile 300-400. It rained a lot, was still quite foggy, and things are beginning to thaw after the cold March and early April snow. We were muddy, wet, and still chilled to the bone. Learning how to have fun in the midst of the misery, and to take it a day at a time. We were slowly increasing mileage, not quite hitting our big days and recovering from the sickness we had. It was beautiful and brutal. #appalachiantrail #ATthruhike #thruhike #thruhiking #adventure #springthaw #hiking

Day 29 AT Thru Hike 2024 Location: NC / TN Border Start: Cherry Gap Shelter - 370.5 End: Roan High Knob Shelter - 387.7 Miles: 17.2 Ascent: 5477 | Descent: 3189 Sleep: Shelter Mood: šŸ™‚ Mission Possible - Power Beyond Left camp at 6:30 am to try and beat the rain that was in the forecast. We did well as we did 9.3 miles in three hours to get to the next shelter just as it started to rain. We had lunch and set off 45 minutes later for Roan Knob Mountain Shelter. Total of 17.7 miles hiked today with a brutal climb to the peak of Roan Mountain. This shelter is a four-sided (old) log cabin (most shelters have only three sides). This one has two levels with the top level being more of an attic. It is best known as the shelter located at the highest elevation on the entire AT. Tomorrow we will hike 16.5 miles to get to Hwy 19E. This is mile marker 395.6 and is where Susy will pick us up for a zero in my hometown of Banner Elk. Canā€™t wait to see if the new restaurant is open for business. I am also looking forward to taking a sauna and spending time in my own bed, a warm shower, washing clothes, and all the luxuries of home. While in Banner Elk, I will need to pack for Susy as she will join me for a section hike. Boomer will stay home, thereā€™s not enough room in the tent plus, he doesnā€™t sleep and gets too sore with the long miles we put in daily! @cbru67 is attempting a thru hike of the AT this season. From Katy, TX, Chris has decided to take on the AT for 7 reasons. His story is inspiring and produces hope. Follow him along his journey as he navigates the obstacles of the trail and life. Heā€™s the kind of hiker that makes being around the trail so rewarding. Thanks Chris for everything and best wishes as you walk towards Katahdin! https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61554031742154&mibextid=LQQJ4d #appalachiantrail2024 #georgiatomaine #whiteblaze #at2024 #thruhiking #thruhiker #longdistancehiking #thruhike #nationalscenictrail #hiking #atthruhike #appalachiantrail #hikeformentalhealth #travelinglite

Weā€™ve got our first thru hiker! Nightshift (@jaruwalks) is the first thru hiker of the northbound season to arrive at The Notch, having started in Georgia in late January. He is attempting a calendar year Triple Crown. If youā€™re not aware, that means hiking the Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, and the Continental Divide Trail all in one calendar year. Heā€™s got a great start and we look forward to following the rest of his adventures. Please give him some encouragement in the comments. šŸ™Œ Thanks for staying with us Nightshift! Hey there, and welcome to my page! My name is Matthew Linden King. Iā€™m an artist from Savannah, GA, my personal/artist page is @matthewlindenking. My friends call me Matt but Iā€™m honestly starting to warm back up to Matthew after about 30 years, so Iā€™ll respond to either. This account exists to document my southbound (SOBO) hike of the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia, starting July 1 of this year (2024). I have been in Georgia my whole life, and thatā€™s partly why I chose the southbound routeā€”there are a number of reasons which I will get into down the trail, but suffice it to say, with one end of the trail landing in my home state, I consider this venture a ā€œlong walk homeā€, hence the handle. I intend to make this an honest place where I can share honest things, and I welcome you to contribute where you can. Itā€™s with a measure of heaviness in my life that I set out on this journey, and I fully anticipate it being a season of soul care for me. I will be posting throughout my 2,200 mile adventure, and I expect it to be filled with introspection, joy, grief, wonder, and a whole array of emotions and experiences. I feel like I am terrified in all the right ways taking on this monumental task, so I hope that means good things lie ahead! I took this picture in October of 2023 on top of Clingmanā€™s Dome in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I was on a backpacking trip with a group of friends where we hiked a section of the A.T., and we were fortunate to summit on a clear, beautiful day. Clingmanā€™s is the highest point on the A.T., so Iā€™ve already made it to the top, lol šŸ˜‚. Sometime in late fall, Iā€™ll be back in this very spot with only a couple hundred miles to go. That seems unreal to contemplate. Thanks for following my journey, and I hope in a way we can all do this together. Peace and love. āœŒšŸ»ā¤ļø . . . #appalachiantrail #atthruhike #atthruhike2024 #appalachiantrailsouthbound #atsouthbound

The weather turned and the last two days were rainy, breezy, and foggy as I covered the last 37 miles of @shenandoahnps. Day 28 AT Thru Hike 2024 Location: NC / TN Border Start: Erwin Uncle Johnnieā€™s - 353.4 End: Cherry Gap Shelter - 370.5 Miles: 17.1 Ascent: 5128 | Descent: 2822 Sleep: Shelter Mood: šŸ™‚ Mission Possible - Power Beyond Getting a later start today. We need to hitch a ride to town and pick up a package at the post office. We also need to plan the next few days carefully as rain and thunderstorms are in the forecast. We have 50 miles to get to Hwy 19E. Need to be mindful of elevation, ridge lines and bad weather. Also want to have the next shelters staked out in case of bad weather. If it is just rain, I am walking. If lightning, we will probably stay at a lower elevation shelter. Met some new people on the trail today. ā€œCubā€ caught my attention as he walked past us while we were taking a water break. Cub had four bananas hanging from his backpack. He was hiking with his mom who is trying to get back home ā€” to Maine! The bananas looked good! ā€œStash,ā€ from Puerto Rico recently retired from the Army after 20 years. The biggest surprise of the day was when I got to the shelter. A gentleman asked if I was Andy Rein! He was Steve Moser or ā€œTin Cupā€ from Maine. Steve worked for Verso Paper and I had had a meeting with him at the Wisconsin Rapids Mill back in 2016. What a surprise! We had Trail Magic from ā€œBTā€ at one of the Gaps. BT is originally from Maple Grove, WI, a very small town. He now lives in TN and he served Lemonade, Arnie Palmers, sweet tea, brownies and cranberry treats. Staying in the shelter tonight. Expecting rain tomorrow so plans may change. Blue Ridge Parkway to the Triple Crown The weather shifted again after apple orchard mountain, specifically with a heat wave. I walked into a drought, the second of my trip. The water sources dried to little more than silty pools. The views were good though. Silver Linings(@silverstrailstories) and I bumped into each other occasionally while taking Blue Ridge Parkway. I took a break at an overlook and there was a group of hawk spotters with large lenses. They took some time to tell me about how they counted the hawks and eagles. Apparently thousands of hawks can be seen following migration patterns during peak season I stopped at a hostel after the 2/3 point and nearly took a zero to hangout more with the adorable resident blind dog and to have another home cooked breakfast. I decided to continue on The temperature became hotter as I reached the Virginia Triple Crown. I took a break beneath a tree and three buzzards landed in the branches above me. I think they knew I was dehydrated The fall colors were really popping and I enjoyed walking along the Tinker Cliffs at sunset. I night hiked to a nearby shelter and startled a group of high section hikers who werenā€™t expecting anyone to be hiking after dark Days: 141-143 Mi: 755-715 #appalachiantrail #appalachiantrailthruhike #appalachiantrail2023 #atclassof2023 #atthruhike #thruhike

There was only one other person, Sahib (trail name), a retired French Diplomat who has hiked all around the world. I have to say I slept better without Boomer, but I missed him. Left camp around 7:30 am. Goal was 16.9 miles to get to Erwin, TN. It was a hot day, so we took numerous water breaks. Met Wayfair along the trail from Greensboro. Wayfair had enjoyed Susy and Cindyā€™s trail magic breakfast the day before. We also met 3-day section hikers from Raleigh and Chattanooga. Highlights of the day: 1.Getting to Erwin. 2. Getting a tent site at Uncle Johnnieā€™s. 3. Eating Mexican food at Panchoā€™s and Amigoā€™s (Brad and I biked from campsite). 4. Soaking our feet in the Nolichucky River. 5. Hanging out with a variety of people at Uncle Johnnieā€™s. 6. Taking a shower. 7. Eating leftover snacks from Susy and Cindyā€™s trail magic by a mountain stream. 8. Sitting around a campfire chatting with a variety of people! It was a fun, but hard day due to the heat., and it is still April! Tomorrow, we start a 3ā€“4-day journey to highway 19E near Roan Mountain. This is at mile marker 395 and is 10 miles from my home. The Cookie Ladyā€™s log cabin is in the woods right beside the AT. Turned out we were the first visitors of the day, and she was just getting up. We waited a few minutes and out came peanut butter cookies. The first one is free and $2 per cookie thereafter. I love peanut butter cookies and Boomer likes peanut butter, too, so I purchased three more for us to share. The Cookie Lady lives on a beautiful, secluded property. We had a nice 30-minute conversation with her and returned to the trail. It was a day of light rain, fog and wind. Actually, a great day to hike as it was cool with an energizing breeze of cool air to support our long day. Going to keep this post short as we are getting up early in morning. We want to be at Samā€™s Gap by 10:00 am for some trail magic. This is going to be special trail magic as the trail angels are my wife and our friend Cindy P. This is their first time doing this ā€” I canā€™t wait to see what they bring. I have a multiple-choice question for all to answer. Boomer has been great on the trail. Most of the time he likes to lead, and every 25-40 yards he stops and looks back at me. I wonder what he is thinking. Is it: A) You guys coming, keep the pace! B) I thought you said there is trail magic on the AT! C) Is this a good site to pitch a tent? D) Are we going in the right direction? Let me know what you think he is thinking. Have a great evening. Even on my hardest day, I still love the trail so much... ...but I'm so frustrated and discouraged today. Even though I took on many technical scrambles, and felt more and more confident and skilled in my abilities, my body has limits. My knee is so painful and swollen, so I'm taking a zero tomorrow in camp to nurse the injury. I think it's worse than I initially thought, and I'm so bummed. I want to keep hiking tomorrow, but it's not a good idea. I've got a hard climb ahead, and I need to heal up. I've got food and am near a spring, so I'm okay to rest here and see how things go. Sad I'm hurt, but still had an amazing time. It's weird how that goes šŸ˜… #atthruhike #appalachiantrials #appalachiantrail2024

Before leaving Hot Springs, Boomer waited in my wifeā€™s vehicle while we enjoyed another satisfying breakfast at the Great Smoky Diner at 7:00 am. Service was great. I saved three pieces of bacon for Boomer; need to get him ready for the long day. We said goodbye to Susy; then Boomer, Brad and I climbed the mountain out of Hot Springs, enjoying beautiful views of the river and city. We ran into Shell from West Bend, Wisconsin. He is on the trail taking it one mile at a time and not knowing where he will end up when it is all over. We also passed Canary from Philly, who was keeping a good pace. At mile 14, we stopped at a spring to get water. Brad realized he lost his filter and water bottle and decided to leave his bag with me while he ran, yes ran, back two miles to find it in the middle of the path!!! That was crazy! After dinner tonight, we had a fire and just relaxed. Iā€™ll see how it goes with Boomer tonight sleeping in the tent. He seems exhausted and his front legs/shoulders are sore; Iā€™ll give him a massage tonight.
