Tough session at #plot4 today. The old strawberry bed was finally removed and the superb soil raked out. The path was realigned and now lies next to the new strawberry bed. I lifted and relaid the slabs. Next up, the cut raspberry canes were transported to the dump. Slashing injuries sustained across both arms! Then the bed dig. It's a small 2.5m x 2.5m bed. It's usually dry in April but it was waterlogged. Some effort to turn it... But the worst was at the bottom of the plot. The lowest bed is effectively a pond. I dug out the end of the path and the corners of the two nearest beds. All three holes filled with water. #plot4 is once again populated by potatoes, onions, garlic and shallots. Potatoes occupy the two bottom beds, the smaller of which is still affected by water. I think, after digging and chatting to our chairperson there is a dip in the clay bed below, which is holding the water in a small area... a job for the winter. The onions are legion this year: we'll see how many grow. Lastly, the plum tree looks to be afflicted by a fungal infection. Climate change is a real thing, with real impacts. It's late March, my #Plot4 is saturated at the bottom. Even with an installed land drain, the water level is around 16cm from the surface. This nasty little blighter is a New Zealand flat worm and is an invasive non-native species which preys upon garden worms. They can easily be found under things such as planks, plant pots or slabs in the garden but also under the soil while they are searching out their prey. They lay eggs that are around 8mm in length and start off red in colour when freshly laid but darken to black in the following days. Once the flatworm locates a garden worm and wraps itself around whilst secreting mucus which first paralyses the worm then dissolves its body down for consummation. First proper day on #Plot4 in 2024. Dung bays emptied onto beds and it was my turn for manure this week. Thanks to neighbour Rab on Plot6 for the help! Dug the brassica bed and moved the frame. Was given a former deck panel to the face when one part broke! What's clear is that climate change is having a real impact on our soil. My plot is completely sodden. It’s willow cutting season! ✂️🌱😁 This is very exciting! As much as I enjoy weaving, I really love growing and this December and January I’m starting a bunch of new willow varieties off to see how each one works out. I’m interested to see how they grow, weave, dry, re soak, the winter stem colour and the dried stem colour, and if they remain happy and healthy in their location. The aim is to learn about the characteristics of a selected bunch of varieties and hone in on a few favourites to grow on a larger scale. Following the best advice from Practical Magic, I’ve planted a rosemary plant by the garden gate, this one is the variety “Miss Jessop” We also found a “Black Lace” elderflower tree in the ‘Search & Rescue’ section of @newhopetoungardens - delighted 💕 We also popped in a new buddleja at the bottom of the plot for the butterflies next summer. Then a massive attack on 2 of the beds! One was being green manured and the other was cleared of all the gone over summer veg. Getting the ground in that bed prepped for onions sets and autumn sown garlic. Howked the tatties today. Rubbish yield, worst since we started in 2007. Pumpkins look great. Carrots lifted, not a fabulous crop... More raspberries, they've been great in 2023. Corn has rotted on the plants, as did our runner beans. Apples from James Grieve poor, but our new Ashmead's Kernel produced some lovely apples. Im pretty sure there is nothing as delicious as a sun warmed raspberry on a hot day. I did a two hour path digging/weeding/hedge trimming/compost pile cleanup in the heat and the sunshine. The handful of raspberries I grabbed to eat on my way home doubled the sweaty satisfaction of making progress in my plot. Do you let things go to seed on purpose in your garden? Insects absolutely love brassica flowers, and helping the local pollinators is always a good thing. These yellow flowers are a gorgeous contrast to the purple kale and I couldn't resist taking a picture.
A contented Sunday morning spent at the allotment. A rose from the garden at home has been popped in beside the shed for some height and colour at the top of the plot. This one is an Ancient Mariner by David Austin who has outgrown the pot on the patio! We did a lot of weeding, the poor leeks were being strangled by the weeds that are popping up like crazy with the rain. One of our allotment neighbours has been very poorly so hasn’t been able to tend her plot recently. She was sharing her harvest with us, which was so kind! We have tasty plans for the beetroots, courgettes, marrow & kohlrabi 💕 Propped up the substantial looking young pumpkins on slabs and tried to encourage them to grow in the right direction! The perennial bed is full of colour and pollinator friendly plants. I gave that a bit of a weeding too before the heavens opened. Going to pop along after work early this week to get more done. I’m planning to start thinking about the crops and veg for 2024 soon too. Got plans to manage the fruits into a fruit cage, sort out a little greenhouse and to finish the wildlife pond in the recycled wheelbarrow! This cucamelon was very kindly gifted to me by @headofthebrae and this is its first fruit! I've never grown them before so I have no idea if it's doing well, but it's a great experiment. Has anyone else had success growing this?
The raspberries are finally contained! (And approximately 10 ft tall). I have felt so guilty about the overgrown raspberries attacking anyone who passed by my plot for weeks, but couldn’t figure out how to dig deep enough to get the posts in the ground. Then someone loaned me a post hammer thing- it was AWESOME! Super heavy and you just slam it down on top of the post over and over. Tremendous fun- it makes me want to put more posts in the ground…. That’ll have to be a later project since the next todo is redoing the paths. I wasn’t sure when I got the plot if I had autumn or summer raspberries so I hedged my bets when I pruned and left about half the healthy looking canes. It turns out I have a mostly autumn raspberries (I can tell because the new canes that grew this year are coming into flower right now) and maybe an autumn fruiting tayberry (SO many prickles). The canes I left have been fruiting for a month- and despite the messy state of them we have had half a pint or so every other day. It’s a tough call for next year- I have read leaving canes on Autumn fruiting raspberries can weaken the plant. I am thinking of leaving 1-2 of the strongest canes on each plant. I will say- I HEAVILY mulched them (~5 inches deep) with mushroom compost and they seemed to have gone wild as a result.
