While it's fine to trim the flowers themselves, leaving the foliage intact is beneficial. What comes next? ๐ซ Once you've removed the flower bulbs from the ground, consider storing them in a cardboard box layered with newspaper for protection. Keep the box in a cool, dry place until it's time for replanting. Planting hydrangeas this morning. Hopefully the beautiful pink with green margins (could be โGreen Mantleโ) will flourish under the skirt of the huge camellia at the end of the bed that runs along the front of the house. Good soil there though I added some soil improver nonetheless. The bulk of the soil improver went into the planting hole for the hydrangea โCandlelightโ, a paniculata variety with long conical white flowers on red stems. The tag says sun loving but not here itโs not! Iโve given it the most sheltered spot I can in the corner of the west side fence & fence to the side gate behind the Japanese maple & with next doors massive Camphor Laurel providing some protection to the west & our stand of bamboo the other side of the gate fence. The challenge will be to keep the water up to it & improve the soil itโs in over time. Iโll top dress it with compost as mulch which will hopefully activate some worms ๐ชฑ Canโt do anything about the humidity so remains to be seen how it fares with that. A perfect little bupleurum plant with its plaited leaf formation, before it was munched by slugs. Iโve been testing autumn planting for a variety of hardy seedlings over the last couple of years. I also sowed biennials for the first time last summer. Iโve had quite a lot of success with it this year โ less so since the slugs moved in mid February. Alongside the bupleurum, I overwintered, with no protection, sweet peas, scabious, cornflowers and orlaya. As well as my biennials โ sweet rocket, sweet william, foxgloves, wallflowers and daucus. Everything except the bupleurum survived the mild winter and slugs, and is so much more advanced than if Iโd spring planted. Planting these hardy annuals now means they will often be first to flower, stronger and more vibrant for their winter pause. ๐ But bringing this garden to life isnโt just about sowing seeds; itโs about mapping your garden. Iโve meticulously planned, so I can have a successful cut flower garden. Thinking now about what my bouquets will look like.
