Mariposa arlequín (Zerynthia rumina) Se trata de una mariposa diurna, de mediano tamaño de la familia Papilionidae. En la gran parte de su zona de distribución presenta una única generación al año en primavera, la cual pone los huevos sobre su planta nutricia, las orugas creceran hasta hacer la pupa, y estas invernan en forma de crisálida. La oruga se alimenta de plantas del género Aristolochia gracias a la cual las orugas adquieren tóxicos que contienen las plantas para así poder usarlos como defensa ante posibles depredadores. En la foto 3 y 4 se puede ver la flor de su planta nutricia en la zona donde fotografié los ejemplares, la "Aristolochia paucinervis", y en la foto 5 se ve una hoja de la misma planta. Tropická liána s obrovskými květy, za které by se nemusela stydět ani Adéla, která ještě nevečeřela ! :-) Na obrázcích je pokojová Aristolochia littoralis, příbuzný je podražec velkolistý (Aristolochia macrophylla) který možná znáte jako stínomilnou liánu s velkými srdčitými listy a pěstuje se jako mrazuvzdorná zahradní rostlina. Ale tyto obrovské květy mají jen tropické druhy podražců. Na nových výhonech může být květ za každým listem a to je pak podívaná ! Z velkých nafouklých žilnatých poupat se otevřou květy velké jako rozevřená mužská dlaň. Ani nevoní, ani nepáchnou, ale tmavý střed květu přitahuje zvědavý hmyz. Zerynthia rumina [L.] Conocida como “Arlequín” por el parecido cromático con los trajes de estos simpáticos personajes del medievo, o “Mariposa de las Aristoloquias” por sus apetencias gastronómicas, esta mariposa no deja indiferente a nadie. Todos sus nombres son bien acertados, y es que de las Aristoloquias ya nos deja claro que sus orugas únicamente se alimentan de este género botánico. En Pirineos, se alimenta principalmente de Aristolochia pistolochia, planta de la que hablé en el anterior post y que invito a su lectura. Sus alas amarillas y rojas son preludio de la bandera del territorio que más ve volar a este pequeño papiliónido, y es que esta mariposa decora Iberistán siendo casi exclusiva de dicha región, aunque extiende ligeramente su distribución al sureste francés y a una pequeña porción del norte de África. Pese a que aquí se puede considerar una mariposa abundante (muchas quisieran volar en sus números), su limitada geografía y su vistosidad probablemente sean quienes la han catapultado a estar catalogada como en peligro de extinción, e incluso de que la Asociación Española para la protección de las Mariposas haya tomado de ella su nombre. En fin, que aunque podríamos hablar horas sobre este bicho, aún más si invitamos a @kkvergara o @iberiantaxonomy a este foro, creo que es hora de dejarle intimidad a esta parejita para que acaben la faena en paz y puedan perpetuar una nueva generación de arlequines “made in Spain”. 念願のジャコウアゲハがやってきた 山野草のウマノスズクサを 我が家の日陰の庭に植えてから いつか、いつか来てくれますようにと 願い続けて数年 何かを探すように、 ウマノスズクサの周辺をひらひら行ったり来たり 飛んでいる黒い蝶が見えたので もしかしてジャコウアゲハ？と 思ったのも束の間 目の前で産卵してくれたのです。 葉の裏に器用に産みつけられた 真っ赤なルビーのような卵があちらこちらに。 雨風をしのげて 捕食者にも見つかりにくい葉裏を 確実に選んで産卵するという 〝本能だから〟という言葉だけでは 簡単に呑み込めない自然の神秘に ただただ感動するばかり。 ジャコウアゲハの幼虫は 有毒のウマノスズクサだけを食べ その毒を幼い頃から体に蓄積し 外敵に食べられないようにしているのだとか。 何でも手当たり次第食べるのではなく 限定された食草を ニッチ（生物学的地位）の範囲内で食べる。 生き物たちは各々が 他を過度に干渉することもなく それぞれ絶妙な距離感とバランスを保って 上手に生きている そして何よりも素晴らしいと思うのが 植物は圧倒的に利他的であるということ。 人間も見習わなければと改めて思います。 子どもたちも興味津々のようで 毎日一緒に成長観察するのが日課になりそうです。 無事に元気に育ちますように ✼••┈┈┈┈••✼••┈┈┈┈••✼ 𝟙 𓆸 〜𝟛 𓆸 昨日の様子。 𝟜 𓆸𝟝 𓆸 今年の4月5日のウマノスズクサの様子 𝟞 𓆸𝟟 𓆸𝟠 𓆸𝟡 𓆸 今朝のウマノスズクサ。よく咲いています。 𝟙𝟘 𓆸 今朝の卵。 よくみると小さな突起があります。 Encounter with spawning of the butterfly. 👨🏻🌾 Scratch-n-soak For breakfast I’m scarifying (scraping off the hard seed coat) and soaking, some pipevine seeds (Aristolochia). We already grow lots of the California native pipevine (Aristolochia californica) in our garden from seeds collected in Bidwell Park, but I wanted to add a couple more, larger growing types (they’re vines, so “longer growing types”? 🤷🏼♂️). These two, A. manshuriensis and A. debilis, should fit the bill. Pipevine germination tends to be slow, and irregular (especially when you stare at the pot of seeds every single day 👀), but I’m hoping at least SOME of these sprout in a reasonable time. We’ll see! 🤞 For small seeds like these, I like to scarify them by rubbing them briefly between two pieces of sandpaper. For Big Boys like chestnuts and acorns, I drag them across our concrete driveway just a bit, just until the meat under the seed coat shows (such an elegant and graceful gardener 🙈). For soaking, we collect small, lonely vintage glasses that get a lot of use. 🫙🫙 All pipevines, except one, are good hosts to pipevine swallowtail butterfly caterpillars. 🍃 🐛 The vines have toxins in them that the caterpillars can partially process and store in specialized cells in their bodies, making the caterpillars toxic and bad-tasting to predators. The lone exception is the gorgeous A. gigantea (“pelican flower”, a tropical species usually grown indoors) which has so much toxin that it kills the caterpillars. The flowers, which arise from the trunks and stems, are believed to have evolved to mimic fungi in the genus Marisimus. This week's early update - I braved the eclipse crowds to check on a few populations of various target species throughout the Hill Country today (luckily the traffic was fairly light as most folks had already settled down/claimed their viewing spot early this morning). First up, images 1-3 Penstemon triflorus, Hill Country Penstemon. Always a show-stopper, especially when they cross with P jamesii or P cobaea (all three found in this area of Texas), the third image is of a typical triflorus and a separate population that did not show any variation in color. Next up, image 4, is Schoenus nigricans (Black bog-rush), a new-to-me genus, and while rare in Texas, this population had 1000's of individuals. Interestingly, this species is native to Central TX, Fl, California, & MX, and is apparently native to Eurasia, Africa, and Australia as well - very odd distribution. I've been meaning to photograph more sedges (and graminoids for that matter) - this species was the first of the year while Carex planostachys (image 5) was a close second. Image 6 - Aristolochia serpentaria along a wooded slope, I've yet to see these flowers open any further than they do in this photo. ウマノスズクサ育成地定期観察5週目 4/7日曜日 22/11℃ 曇り時々晴れ 写真では分かり難いですが、殆どの鉢から新芽が出てきました。 毎日、ジャコウアゲハのオスとモンシロチョウが飛んでいます。 ①この一週間、あまり天気は良くありませんでしたが、気温が高くなりウマノスズクサも他の花たちも一気に成長していました。 ②定期観察株は、先週液肥を施肥しましたが、クルクルと曲がったままで成長していません。原因は不明です。 ③定期観察株②は、44㌢になっていました。先週16㌢なので28㌢の成長でした。 ④隣の株が急に成長を始めました。 ⑤7号スリット鉢の株は26㌢から52㌢へ倍の生長でした。 ⑥露地植えの株は116㌢で1㍍を超えました。 ⑦露地植えの全体。一気に成長しています。だいたい50㌢以上に伸びてきています。 ⑧⑨10号スリット鉢の株は、一気に10本以上の新芽が出てきましたが、1本が早く成長し、半分くらいがそれに続いて生長しています。残りは、直ぐに葉っぱを広げ始めていて、これらが越冬隊が産卵した幼虫の食事になります。 ⑩昨年の9月に鉢増しした時に落ちてしまったひげ根(直径1ミリ弱)を根伏せしていたものが発芽しました。極小の葉っばでの発芽です。 元がひげ根なのでこれからの成長も遅いですが、これらかどうなるか楽しみです。 この時期は、気温が上がれば一週間で約30㌢ぐらい成長しています。 越冬隊のメスの羽化も近いと思われるので、小さい鉢やポットはネットを掛けてるか、室内に取り込んでいきたいと思っています。 #ウマノスズクサ #ウマノスズクサ育友会 #aristolocha_deviles #aristolochia #byasa #ジャコウアゲハ #出会ってくれてありがとう

It’s alive and putting up new growth, but December’s freeze means I likely won’t have flowers this year. The butterflies won’t care, their babies will munch on the leaves.
